We Tried It: Cabbage Soup Diet – Day 3
Craving – crav·ing (krā’vĭng) n. A consuming desire; a yearning.
It’s day 3, and Karlie and I have been experiencing some weird cravings. Sometimes things that we would never eat. We were walking down the street in Manhattan’s Chelsea area and to our surprise, a group of French tourists were eating what smelled like the best pizza in the world. We tried to get close to simply inhale the beautiful aroma of tomatoes, basil and cheese… oh wonderful cheese.
I found that smell became my worst enemy. Getting into the subway, a girl eating McDonald’s… walking through the Manhattan Mall, the sweet scents of Cinnabon… who is eating French Fries? Co-workers tried their hardest not to tempt us, but the delicious smells of Italian leftovers warmed up for lunch were tough to ignore. Maybe day 4 will be easier?
doneDay 3 – Menu
Fruit and Vegetable Day!
Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato. Drink plenty of water and take a multivitamin.
Creative Creations: Try a green salad with fruits like berries, apples, and pears on top. Missing salad dressing? Squeeze fresh lemon on top instead. And if you are craving meat, try grilling some Portobello mushrooms with non-fat olive oil spray over a bed of spinach!

I’ve seen this cabbage soup diet tried before. The whole idea borders on insanity.
A friend and I tried the diet twice and it was absolutely nauseaing. We did lose 8 pounds in a week but after coming off the diet, the pounds just returned immediately. I still to this day hate the smell of cooked cabbage. Take my advice and do not try this diet!!

Thanks for the great comment Jackie.
Even though being on a diet is not that fun… having Melissa as a side-kick made it bearable. Plus, it gave us a chance to laugh at ourselves — something everyone should do! Thanks for watching.
My husband and I tried this diet many years ago. Of course it will work because it is low in calories. But after a while you can’t stand it, so you quit. Actually my husband developed itching then hives after about 3 days. He still can’t eat much cooked cabbage.
Are you mad! A large portion of the world is starving, I say eat well while you can. There’ll be plenty of time for minimal food eating when we’re in a depression.
You can’t expect to keep dieting and staying away from “normal” food. The only way to keep the weight off is to exercise. Doing this will maximize your calorie burning, so you won’t have to suffer with a cabbage diet, carb-free diet, etc. You’ll be able to eat regularly, and do so while enjoying your favorite foods. Do not, however, go crazy with pizza and fried foods. You still have to monitor your intake.
I would love to see the lemon aide diet tested. I have read that it is awesome if you can handle living on the special lemon aide for 10 days. It is more for detoxing your body but weight loss is of course a benefit. I am thinking I will try it. Good luck with this one and I look forward to reading your experiences with this and other diet trends. Good job, Keep up the good work.
Any fad diet is a bad idea and potentially hazardous to your health. Whether it is the Atkins diet or the grapefruit diet – none of them work. There are many variables to consider before “dieting”. How much excercise am I doing? Am I eating the right types of foods (sorry vegetarians you can not avoid meat)? Diabetic? Safest way to lose weight is to eat healthy, avoid processed foods, and get plenty of exercise. And even though you may not see a difference you will defenitly feel a difference – and it will show at your annual checkups.
I just saw your blog on day three. I actually started the diet two days ago. So, today is my veggie day. This has been the only diet that has ever worked for me. I did it 7 years ago and lost almost 60 lbs. Add Cajun Pepper to the soup. It makes it edible.
Good luck on the diet Brian! Hope our blog can help you with ideas and support! We know exactly what you are going through! – Melissa
Diets don’t work because of something called “hunger”. Lifestyle change is the only way to lose weight and keep it off. Try meal replacement shakes to take it off and then stay away from processed foods (fast foods the worst). Remember 60+ percent of Americans are obese and a mindset change is the only thing that will help.
Cabbage soup is a good start. You have to add other low cal items or you will go crazy and the whole thing will be over fast. Try low salt green beans with salsa warmed up – not too much salsa. Apple slices are good. Lettuce with salsa mixed with vinager and is good too. You can eat as much lettuce as you like…
There are also low cal soups on the soup isle just leave off the crackers. Some of them have as little as 80 cal a serving but are two servings to a can.
Stay away from yogurt, stay away from oranges and other high cal fruits. Think about going vegan as a lifestyle.
Also, dont be fooled into the ‘eat breakfast’ notion. The body stores sugar… enough for a nights sleep. Exercise before eating so that you burn fat instead of the food you just put in.
Also, exercise will kill those cravings fast. A diet coke helps. A cup of coffee helps, too.
Anorexics know the tricks.
