Having been at tabletop exercises for FMD and seen results pretty much the same as Crimson Sky, the mere thought of the gov. moving the Plum Is. facility to a mainland site is insane!

The public consumer needs to sit up and take notice of this one because if you eat, you are involved in agriculture and should the livestock in the US be decimated by FMD you won’t eat US meat anymore. The price will go up even more than it has in the last 12 months.

Try walking in the farmer’s shoes awhile to get the full picture of what FMD will do and you will stop cursing him with your mouths full.

If this plant needs to be moved why not move this to China or Mexico? They have sent all of our jobs to these countries so why not this? I sure wouldn’t want this in my state. This needs to be moved to a desert or an isolated island if it has to be moved. I can’t believe that President Bush would consider such a move.

It doesn’t sound like a safe program no matter what state they move this too. People need to write their senators and tell them how they feel. Of course our government doesn’t care about us all they care about is taxes, taxes, taxes, and foreign countries.

I feel that animal disease laboratory should remain on Plum Island, with better security and updated physical plant operations. An island offers more isolation and security for disease investigation than a laboratory located in cattle country and livestock grazing areas.Plum Island offered support and the
expertise necessary for the West Nile Viral outbreak in the equine community in 1999.

The World Trade Organization has “out-sourced” 2 million jobs to Inda alone with the blessing of the officials in DC therefore I do not believe “more Jobs” is the real issue
The USDA has spent millions of dollars bribing breed asoc., 4-h kids and state legislatures to force farmers to sign away their property rights by getting premises IDs. So money is not the issue either.
USDA actions in the recent past.
1.Recent downer cattle at the Hallmark processing plant in CA. should have been caught by a meat inspector.
2.BSE (Mad Cow) testing.
a. USDA has decrease the sampling for BSE
b. USDA has refused to allow processing plant to do 100% BSE testing
3.USDA’s actions in protecting mainland USA from disease.
a. USDA has reopened US borders to Canadian imports of cattle despite protests.
The USDA is not doing its job of protecting the USA food supply because they are too busy stuffing the United Nations Agenda 21 down our thoats and catering to the wishs of the World Trade Organization. check out http://www.usda.gov/oce/sustainable/partnerships.htm

I do not trust the USDA and a disease out break could be used as an excuse to force premise ID and animal identification on the american farmer, as demanded by the World Trade Organization. Leave FMD on Plum Island.

Moving Foot & Mouth disease to the mainland is a very bad idea. This affect EVERYONE in the “kill zone” not just farmers.
Vials have already been stolen from a government lab in the UK The USDA has already stated they will NOT vacinate instead they will “depopulate”. That is slaughter all hoof and possibly other animals,
In a recap of the NIAA anual meeting Sharon said “Patrick Webb from the National Pork Board said he wanted to talk to me (that’s cuz I’m always shaking my head with a long face) and then sat me down to give me the details on the 12.4 kilometer depopulation zone, “but of course, we don’t ever want to have to slash and burn,” he said in a fatherly tone.” I have also seen references to burning of buildings in other documents.

I suggest reading the history of the UK government foul up in the UK before making any judgements about moving FMD to the mainland USA. 60 suicides, billions of pounds in costs and major polution from rotting meat. UGH

A totally outrageous move. WTF are they thinking of. Any that would support moving that facility to their area are thinking of nothing but lining their own pockets, and could care less about the ranching and cattle industry. If they move it anywhere, it should be to some far off island well away from any bovine habitation or populated area..As usual, anytime the federal government geys involved with anything, it’s a castasprophe, and due to some politicians greed.

This disease is so cnotageous that it can be trnsmitted by breath, vehicle, clothing, etc. and workers can’t own pets! A worker could easily infect his neighbor’s pets and/or livestock. Nothing is broken; leave the lab where it is! The justification is more jobs. This is poor reasoning at best.Congress should kill this idea soon.

This disease is properly called “Hoof and Mouth Disease”. Cattle do not have feet. When I was a child in Texas in the forties, Hoof and Mouth Disease was not unheard of. It was controlled by county to county cattle quarantines and distruction of infected herds. It’s the end of civilation only for less than intellegent journalist moon-bats.

This article raises legitimate concerns. Those of us in the animal medical community understand that the current biohazard controls, especially well demonstrated in the pork industry, have been quite successful. Unfortunately, human nature is the wild card factor. Terrorism manifests in many forms. Careful employment screening and location selection can minimize risk. Keep in mind, the huge 2001 outbreak in was not due to a research facility’s biohazard security failing.

Considering the way our federal government has “mishandled” and then “misspoke” about all kinds of catastrophes and their intervention in them, this is the very most assinine idea they’ve ever had! Leave the research right where it is…ISOLATED!
