Man Uses Pig’s ‘Pixie Dust’ to Fix Finger

With the help of an experimental powder, a man’s severed finger has regrown to its original length in just four weeks, reports London’s Daily Mail.
Lee Spievack, of Cincinnati, who sliced almost half an inch off the top of one of his fingers, described the powder as “pixie dust,” according to the newspaper.
The “pixie dust” is actually extra-cellular matrix, bursting with collagen and is made from a dried pig’s bladder, the newspaper reports.

Tell us what you think.

Where can I get some dried pigs bladder at? This sounds amazing. Would could it do to other things such as eyes or those that have huge scars? I would love to see my little girl get some of this working for her.

Comment by Ron

I suspect that variations of this “pixie dust” will start appearing for sale on every XXX website, and every span email, that promotes “growth” in the near future. I’m glad that it shows medical promise for regrowth of injured tissue, but watch out for the offshoot sales.

Comment by Karen

Next generation facelift? I want to know when it’s going to come out as a face cream.

Comment by Dave

It is about time they came out with the story. They have been doing this stuff for about 2-3 years. They need to start mass marketing this and get it in the hands of our wounded soldiers.

Comment by megan

This is awesome! Especially considering that being unable to stand or walk can mean the end of a horse’s life. This is the best news I’ve heard all day!

Comment by philinmedford

I wondered when I read this story how long before we’d see ads saying: “now you can extend that certain part of a males body”

Comment by Jason

So what causes the finger to stop growing at exactly the right time? Why doesn’t it just keep growing into a very long finger?

Comment by MATT COPENHAVER

TOO BAD THIS WASN’T AVAILABLE FOR JOHN WAYNE BOBBIT.

Comment by Christine

Well…..I want to know more about this….how long has this been known about? When did this occur? Has the Pixie Dust been successfully used on horses, and for how long?
Why isn’t there MORE news coverage on this incredible miracle??

The Bible predicts this, so I’m not as surprised as most, but iIdo want to know if this is real or a tabloid hoax!

Comment by phil

This is amazing is anybody elese doing anything with this? I hope so, lets get to using this.

Comment by winfred nichols

This seems to be a little hard to believe. If this were true wouldn’t they want to let people with a skin problem know about it? As skin thins when getting older, it bruises and cuts very easily. That is where they would get the most good from this ‘pixie dust’.

I lost the end of a finger at five years old. This finger has a finger nail that grows and is a nuisance. I might let them experiment on this finger if they promised in writing it wouldn’t cause problems.

If ‘pixie dust’ works to renew a finger it should renew skin, right?

Comment by RBuitron

Show me the proof first!

Comment by Bubba

I don’t believe it … I honestly don’t believe he cut off 1/2 inch of his finger. Heck I’ve cut the top of my finger (deep enough to cut my finger nail in half) of before and it grew back. And I didn’t even use the “Pixie Powder”. If he didn’t cut any bone off there’s no real validity in it as far as I’m concerned.

Comment by philinmedford

Ron: Glad I wasn’t the only one that saw the possiblities. Falls under the “great minds think alike” category? LOL

Comment by Alan

Where are the before and after pictures? I would be skeptical about accepting this on face value. Just this week a woman saw Jesus in her ultrasound scan.

Comment by Terry

DNA is coded t limit the length of the finger.

Comment by Lynn Bailey

Would be wonderful if this “pixie dust” could be used to rejuvenate FACES of elderly people! –instead of plastic surgery.

Comment by Sadie Strudelberger

In the article are the words “dried pig’s bladder,” Is the pig dried or is the pig’ bladder dried?

Comment by Jason

Does this “pixie dust” recover nerve endings as well or just the tissue?

Comment by Kyle

For those males thinking about using it down you know where…….just realize you have to cut the end off for it to work. I can’t see that happening. I bet that Bobbit guy is just wishing this stuff came out long ago.

Comment by john

WHY was this story not out there 3 years ago….WHAT part of it seems so good that it needed to be withheld for 3 years??? WHEN I sliced @ 1/8″ off 15 years ago, it was attempted to be surgically returned but it still sloughed off…..it has re-grown the length and has a fingerprint but is much more like a callous…Would need to see lots, lots more info before I think it is real.

Comment by Colt Williams

Oh, and I love how ya’ll are too scared to post a realist’s comment as well!

This Story is Hog Wash!
Who Would Be dumb enough to believe This?
Where are the Pictures?

If this were true, Presidant Bush could use the magic dust to grow a brain!

Comment by Jody Smith

I was wondering if anyone has heard if heart valves could be fixed with the “Pixie Dust”?

Comment by Ella

Will this “Pixie Dust” work on Scars and Stretch Marks?

Comment by Gean Kearns

If this dust where to be injected would it stop aging are regrow cells in the body keeping us young?

Comment by ColoradoMom

This needs to be applied to our wounded soldiers, for sure. But there are many other people (and possibly animals??) that could benefit from this procedure.

I’m curious, like another poster who asked the question: how does it know when to stop growing? We certainly don’t want any EXTRA growth of tissue - that would cause a whole new host of problems!

Comment by Gean Kearns

If injected will this powder heals cells such as cancer and would it stop aging?

Comment by Doug

Its interesting how the man’s brother is the owner of the company that creats the pixie dust. Granted it may help in skin growth its hard to imagine regeneration. I would obtain further details into his “accident”

Comment by Rick

Storys like this give me hope for my fingers. I have bad fingers from a sawmill accident several years ago. The fingers were severly cut up and have a lot of nerve and muscle damage, along with bone damage from several breaks and many cuts from the saw blades. The surgeons at the time of the accident wanted to remove the fingers totally, but I’ve always kept working on them and hoping for future medical advances. So I’ve been reading about the research into this for a while now. Some of the research is now funded by the military for possible ways to re-grow limbs lost in combat. There’s been a lot of good results, but most of the access to the stuff is still limited to research and researchers. This is the second time I’ve read about one of the people doing the research that just went ahead and used it on themselves. I guess they can see how good it works and just aren’t about to wait for research and government approval when they can get it themselves.

Comment by PaulinSD

When I see it on Discovery Channel or Myth Busters (hopefully one of those guys will cut off his own finger to test it) I will see it as real and viable. Sorry I need to see it for myself and if it is not a hoax it will be great for those who come back from war missing parts or even be able to reroute damaged psyche (PTSD) and brain injuries which occur from explosions and such. perhaps even an alternative to open discectomy.

My husband had an accident similar to that of the man in the article, in late March. He had just finished inspecting some piece of equipment and had his hands on his sides, when the machine he had just inspected minutes before snapped and took over a quarter of an inch of his left thumb, a clean cut. After he went to the ER with the severed tip inside a bag, a surgeon told him there was no way to have the tip re-attached. It has been almost five weeks since that accident, and some of the thumb has not healed. He still has a tiny little bit of nail bed left, but everything else looks awful, and it is also a little swollen.

I would definitely be interested in contacting the University of Pittsburgh, to see if he is a good candidate for that experimental treatment. He could well benefit from it.

Comment by Skip

I chopped part of my finger off three years ago and I can not find any REAL information on this . I say this is a BS story .

Comment by Bill A

Remember the Wayne Bobbit story yrs back where his wife cut off his manhood. I wonder if this would work for him?

Comment by Bob

This story seems to contradict itself. It states he cut of an inch of his finger yet did not damage bone, nerves or tendons. If I cut off an inch of my index finger it would be gone from the last knuckle up. So which is it?

Comment by David

Interesting story. It looks like it only grows soft tissue at this point, but that’s a huge start. I happen to be a former soldier that lost part of my neck. It would be nice to get it a little closer to its original shape again. Reconstructive surgery only goes so far.

Comment by Becky

I sure wish they’d hurry up and release this for use by others as many people loose finger tips daily. I saw this story on CBS Sunday Morning and it was incredible what other organs are being grown for use. Hopefully this is just the beginning of great things to come.

Comment by Kim...Montreal

Simply Amazing! Let’s get this party started! What else could this amazing discovery help? Heart, Brain, Lungs, Liver. Could this work on an amputee? Legs, Arms? This sounds so wonderful!

Comment by The Chad

“Would could it do to other things such as eyes or those that have huge scars?”

It seems like you have to apply it immediately after the wound is created to prevent scar tissue from forming. It doesn’t seem likely that it would remove existing scar material.

“So what causes the finger to stop growing at exactly the right time? Why doesn’t it just keep growing into a very long finger?”

The same thing that prevented your finger from growing longer as you were growing up as a child. DNA mapping.

I can see this stuff maybe put into a spray form to spray on cuts and such to prevent scarring as one possible use.

Comment by The Chad

I think a lot of you are missing the point. Did you read the story? There’s no “magic” involved. All he did was accelerate the natural finger growth (on the soft tissue just like normal cuts heal) and prevent scarring. It’s not like he chopped off a whole finger or arm and it miraculously grew back.

for all you non believers i did a science abstract on this story in Scientific American magazine just last week. Its in the april 08 edition if you want to know more.

Ed Anger, you have wonderfully demonstrated the general “my brain is in my derriere’ attitude of all democrats. Thank you!

Comment by rtg

I’m wondering what this could do for burn victims. Can’t think of any group that could benefit more from this.

Comment by SportyGuy

“Spievak has not lost any bone, nerves or tendon material.”

That’s a quote from the ambiguous article. I infer that half of the tissue on his finger was lost and the new tissue regenerated around existing the bone and tendons.

“…and is made from a dried pig’s bladder, the newspaper reports.”

Obviously the author has difficulty “speaking on paper” because I also can’t believe a bladder from a dried pig was used. “wink”

Comment by Jean Kneese

I can see it now - for only $39.99 we will send you 1/2 oz jar of the amazing pixie dust - but wait - if you order now we will double your order.

I would need medical lab proof to believe in pixie dust is anything other than Tinker Bell’s favorite.

Comment by nodevilsplease

“It is thought that the dust kick-starts the body’s natural healing process by sending out signals that mobilize the body’s own cells into repairing the damaged tissue, according to the newspaper.” This phrase is very persuasive and needs more vetting for truth and accuracy! Because, if true, this is the greatest product in the history of mankind! Imagine this technology cross-bred with cloning technology and stem-cell research. The outcome would be the regrowth of any body part damaged, right? Afterall, everything occurs in the brain, which holds the signals to a complete body part. Probably you’ve heard the cases where amputees state that they can still feel their toes, for example, even though their leg has been amputated. Hearts, lungs, limbs, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, genetalia… all re-growable in original, unique form. Even the brain itself, could be re-grown, giving new life to those that suffer Alzheimer’s disease or other types of brain injury, including gun-shot or shrapnel injuries to the brain. Very interesting, indeed!

In regards to Mr. Anger a few posts back:

Do libs always have to make stupid comments about the president to show they lack any depth or is any good news too much to deal with without spouting off some idiocy?

If this article is true, just think of the possibilities. Especially for our hero’s fighting in around the world.

Pigs’ Pixie Dust — Is that what makes pigs fly? :)

Thank you, Sadie! I thought I was the only one who noticed those types of grammer errors.

The phrase “dried pig’s bladder,” certainly has a different meaning than “pig’s dried bladder”.

How do you cut half an inch off the tip of your finger and not loose and bone or tendon? That doesn’t seem right.

WOW! I wonder when they will start selling this stuff on late night to TV for that Certain part of………….:-)

Pigs’ pixie dust — is that what makes pigs fly? :)

But seriously, this sounds pretty amazing. I have a Ph.D. in cell biology, and I think this is very possible. I would defnitely want to see proof, and more studies done. This has tremendous potential for wound healing applications and perhaps cosmetics. It could possibly even be used to someday to create tissues or organs –or even mass production of meat for consumption — in vitro. Of course, I’ll remain skeptical until I see published proof. Will have to read to find out more.

Comment by bjim

when will we see it on late night TV!

Comment by Christine

Will this be researched for use in repairing damaged disks and ligaments in spine?

Comment by Timi

This would be amazing if true but if true would get a much bigger play than this and show before and after pictures.
Will it regrow hair too?

Comment by Emmi in Philadelphia!

This would be a God Send if really true…I find it hard to believe. If anything maybe it can grow “skin” back, but how can it possibly grow “Bones, Tendons, muscles, veins, artieries”???

I am very skeptical on this one. Maybe “skin cells”, but thats it!

Oh to the Guy who wrote about ‘Bobbit, ha,ha! He got a brand new “better” Penis, after Lorriana chopped it off, so he actually made out good!

Comment by The Kid

pixie dust…yeah, that’s believable. especially with all the pictures and evidence this article gives. does anybody want to buy a unicorn, ’cause i’ve got like 4 of ‘em at my house? i use ‘em to hunt leprechauns.

Comment by Scott

I lost half of my finger in a hydraulic log splitter accident at age 16. I’d love to have some of this “pixie dust” to regrow the end and learn the piano or guitar!

Comment by Lawrence

The last sentence in the story says,

“Spievak has not lost any bone, nerves or tendon material.”

Clearly the man did not regrow a portion of his severed finger. He may have regrown tissue, but there is already a healing process in our bodies that does that.

The story states the injury occurred three years ago and that the man claims his finger healed in four weeks. If he had truly regrown a portion of a body part I guarantee you that news of this would have come out immediately.

Either Fox News has been duped or has for one reason or another decided to publish a tabloid-quality news story.

You know… I heard about a girl who stood on her head and drank ice water and never got pregnant once! Go get it, Fox News!

Comment by Dennis

I have my two finger tips cut off at the first knuckle on my left hand and find it hard to believe any type of dust is going to grow my finger tips back, finger nail and all with finger prints. I know how hard it is to get the feeling back and the tips of my fingers are at the bone and it has been 8 years and they are still healing. So, I say this is fabricated and not possible.

Comment by James Ellis

I was grinding metal, March 31th 2008, when the face grinder grabbed the metal and it took off a big chunk of my thumb, no bone. It looked close to what this mans finger looked like.
I took pictures almost every day of the healing process. (”www.rennips.com” I need to organize the pictures but they are all there, caution they are high resolution)
It’s been one month today and it is 98% healed, and appears that there will not be any evidence that it happened at all.
All I did was keep the thumb “soaked” in “First Aid Cream” (Neosporin) not letting it dry out, and changing the dressing several times each day. Surprisingly it did not hurt much, no pain killers were needed, when it happened or after.

Comment by craig

“WOW” IF THIS IS TRUE, YOU HAVE TO WONDER HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO GET TO THE COMMON CONSUMER ?? I GOT SCLERODERMA AND HAVE LOST 4 FINGERS AND A THUMB,AND ON THE VERG OF LOSING 2 MORE, WOULD BE A LIFE SAVER” CROSSED FINGER IN UTAH”

Study Finds No Cancer-Marijuana Connection
By Marc Kaufman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, May 26, 2006; Page A03

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.

The new findings “were against our expectations,” said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

“We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”

Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin’s previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.

Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.

My left index finger from the last joint to the tip was crushed between a downed tree and a falling tree when I was 20 years old. It looked like strawberry jam. I went to the hospital and the doctor told me that I would have a much shorter finger from then on. He said there was nothing to stitch, so he put a finger cup on it and wrapped it. He instructed me to soak it in a solution of betadine? and hydrogen peroxide? (this was 35 years ago) 3X day for 30 days to prevent infection. That was a tall order for an active, 20 year old with ADD tendencies. But I did it and after 30 days I carefully removed the plastic cup expecting to find a short, bloody stump. Instead I found that the tip of my finger had regrown to within about 3/16″ of it’s normal length. It looked brand new, like a baby’s finger. The nail grew back later. I wonder if the “pixie dust” had anything to do with this guy’s results. It wasn’t a very “scientific” experiment.

Comment by Patricia Hill

I would be interested to know if Pixie Dust has been used on internal organs. I have a son who
has Alpha One disease and a husband who suffers from Emphasema. Is it currently being used as an enhaler or perhaps injected for copd? Thank you in advance for your attention.

Comment by John Faillace, MD

Mr. Ellis has it right. If you look carefully at the picture before, he only lost part of the pad of his finger. Probably about 8×12mm. As a hand surgeon, I have seen this many times. With proper wound care and patience, this kind of result is the norm, without “pixie dust.”
That being said, there may be something beneficial in the powder to accelerate growth and minimize scarring. Before I would recommend it to patients I would need to see all the expected animal (first then human) research with placebo controls.

animal products are a recipe for disaster hormones we know little about could cause
