Mom Forced to Deliver Baby At 28 Weeks After Losing 42 Pounds
Fiona Shaw promised she would eat healthy when she discovered she was pregnant.
She told her boyfriend she would give up fast food and eat fresh fruit and vegetables instead.
But 28 weeks into her pregnancy, Shaw’s morning sickness was so bad that she lost 42 pounds and was forced to have an emergency Cesarean section, reports the U.K.’s Daily Mail.

Where was her Doctor? Many things could have, and should have been done, prior to this delivery!! Some women suffer greatly with “morning sickness”, 24/7. She should have been placed in the Hospital, pronto! Shame on her Doctor!!!!!
I too hard terrible morning sickness that seemed to last forever. The only pill that would touch it was Zofran which is normally for chemo patients. The one thing that finally fixed it was when they ran a blood test and found that my progesterone was low. They scared the heck out of me when they prescribed it, the nurse told me that it would make me more tired and run down – and at this point I couldn’t move ten feet without sitting down! But once I started taking it the nausea stopped dead, I got my appetite and energy back and was fine the rest of the pregnancy.
Dawn, I did too. The condition is called hyperemesis gravidarium. Right now, I am participating in a genetics study that is trying to find out if there is a genetic cause.
I had doctors drop me because of the condition, although I at least got a Zofran prescription out of them. I wound up doing without prenatal care until I was 28 weeks. Thank God she was ok.

I suffered hyperemesis for 3 pregnancies the first I lost 30 pounds in 1 month, doctors could not figure out how to treat me, the second pregnancy we discovered a drug called Phenergan but it would not work unless it was given through an IV. My third pregnancy almost resulted in my death by my 6th week of prenancy I had lost 45 pounds, rushed to the hospital I had to stay until my 28th week only able to keep food down with the aid of Iv drugs Phenergan and Zofran. My hyperemesis was so severe that my doctor stated he had only seen one other case that severe and that woman did not survive. I was forced to get my tubes tied cause my doctor did not think I would survive another pregnancy. Four doctors took me off the Iv convinced it was all in my head if this lady was this sick she was most likely advised that crackers would work. Ha!
I also had lost weight during my pregnancy due to exstreme morning sickness. However, mine I considered all day sickness.
My OBGYN tried everything she could think of to help from medications to different technics. After leaving her and finding a different doctor the same issue had continued. The new doctor refered me over to a high risk doctor after a few months. And after a few weeks with him, and several episodes of contractions he sent me to the hospital to be monitored.
Eventually my liver and kidneys stop working, my blood wouldnt clot and my lungs started filling up with fluide. The doctor did an emergency c-section six weeks early. I was in ICU for three days on a resporator.
It wasnt untill three weeks after going home that my doctor called me to let me know what had caused this. The answer..Antiphospholipids Antibodies.
My total weight loss was 30 lbs. My sons weight was 5lbs 12 oz and was very healthy.
I too had hyperemesis….with both of my pregnancies. I lost 22 pounds before I ever gained with my first daughter. My HCG levels were so high….on paper it looked like I was carrying triplets. I had to have the backs of my teeth recoated with enamel because I vomited sooo much I had no enamel left. My dentist thought I was bulimic. I explained it was due to pregnancy and she said she’d never seen such a thing. My poor doctor had never seen a case like mine either. Turns out only about 5% of women get so bad. I had it all 9 months with both babies. Vomitted up to 30 times a day. The second pregnancy was a little easier because I went to a specialist who put me on drugs the minute we knew I was pregnant. Still he told me to never get pregnant again because I could lose a kidney. That much dehydration takes a huge toll on your body. Both my babies were born healthy and at large weights so they basically took everything from me. My heart goes out to any mother who has to endure this. Thanks to God there is always that light at the end of the tunnel! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!
I had hyperemesis also and lost 16 pounds before I was sent to a nutritionist around 20 weeks. My doctors still didn’t seem overly concerned. I tried zofran/other anti-nausea prescriptions but had a young son to care for and they wanted me alert for that reason. I eventually found foods that I could eat and avoided those that I could not. I was sick until the end of my pregnancy, but it was only occasional and I gained back that 16 pounds plus another 14 or so in the last few months.
This happened to me with my second daughter, I was 130 Pounds when I got pregnant with Gabby and by the time I was 5 months pregnant with her, I was weighing 90 pounds, they wanted me to abort her because they said my body was rejecting her, GABBY was healthy as can be, it was me that was not healthy, WELL I did not abort and went to a Chinese herbal medicine doctor and by the time I was into my 8 month, I had gained the 40 pounds back, plus an additional 20 pounds.
Gabby is an HEALTHY 11 yr old now..
Thank God this woman and her baby were ok; many who suffer from hyperemesis are not so fortunate. I had HG with 2 pregnancies, with the 2nd being severe. Because I had an excellent ob, I had great care with home health nurses, IVs, in and out of the hospital, zofran pump, and other meds. However, many doctors and nurses are completely uneducated on this disease. There needs to be much more awareness of HG and more support for the research so our children don’t have to suffer.

I am glad they saved both Mom and baby. I am also glad she had the baby and did not take it to some pp type place.
cundos to the doctor
I had two pregnancies experiencing the same condition both times. The first time I was sick and lost almost 25 pounds in a short time. I had an emergency c-section at the end of the pregnancy. The second pregnancy I was hospitalized for 28 days during the first trimester. I did not eat or drink anything during the 28 days. I was given IV fluids and lost almost 35 pounds or more. I remained sick for nine months. My child was born at full term healthy and without any serious problems.
I lost 30 lbs in 30 days with my son due to my hypermesis. I was in the hospital for aproximately 6 weeks, starting when I was 6 weeks pregnant. I was sick the entire pregnancy but was less sick due to taking prednisone, which was the last drug my doctor prescribed for me to try when I was about 5 months pregnant. My son was full term and born in great health. I had three pregnancies prior and none were brought to term due to my extreme hypermesis. I doubt I will try for another child, as my doctor told me my risk of having it again is about 99%.
Angry mom,
We don’t know she wasn’t under medical care. I don’t know what the quality of care of HG is in the U.K. but here in the U.S. the hesitation was there about hospitalizing me. I was left at home on IV for 4 weeks with my second daughter. I lost 25lbs with her and that was rough and I had it to lose compared to some women. I couldn’t eat, even with treatment for 4 weeks. With my son and this baby I have had a hard time getting Drs to take my problems seriously. Sadly some Drs. still ask as if HG is all in our heads or we are exaggerating, and Morning sickness is just par for the course.
I mean here I am 36 weeks along and this pregnancy has been a breeze compared to my girls yet I have gained a grand total 5 pounds so far.

Why wasn’t this woman treated with Total Parenteral Nutrition (complete feeding through a central vein)?
I too had hyperemesis gravidarium. I threw up about 20 times a day. I lost about 20 pounds during the pregnancy. They put a pic line in and I was on IVs 24/7 for 7 months while living on the couch. I was only allowed to watch tv with no drama. I watched the game show channel and learned to love Richard Dawson on Match Game all over again (ugh – heh) My mother had to come stay with me and she and my husband took turns changing the bags, doing the hepron (sp?). I took Zofran and Phenergan (sp?). It took me two years with some physical therapy to regain the muscle and strength I had before. The moment our daughter was born, the sickness went away. She was born right on her target date, though!
I wish doctors knew more. I lost between 30-50 lbs with all 4 pregnancies due to hyperemesis. That a doctor would say that is unheard of is absolutely crazy! I had Zofran and a pump that put the medication in my leg constantly with my last two pregnancies. I had friends who had a PICC line put in (permanent IVs) because they could not hold anything down. Doctors really do need to take this seriously.
Bah. This is news? I’ve had four kids (and adopted three). Lost 30, 40 pounds every pregnancy just by eating right. Lost 45 pounds the last pregnancy. Gained it all back within eight minutes of stopping nursing. Every kid healthy, full term (and then some) — and unfortunately, I’m still a big, fat cow.
“Unheard of”!!!, only an uneducated doctor should be making that type of statement. I myself lost over 35 pounds during my last pregnancy thanks to this same disease which is, absolutely, NOT mornining sickness. While some symptoms are similar the degree of illness and the addition of other symptoms make Hyperemesis Gravidarum something completely different. I certainly would have lost an even greater amount of weight if I had stayed with my first doctor who was not knowledgable about this disease. I survived only because I switched doctors, had 24 hr IVs through a PICC line while on home health care for over three months and took more meds than I ever thought I’d put into my body. I’m happy to report that although I was sick for the entire pregnancy I was able to deliver a healthy, full-term daughter. Both the reporter of this story and the doctor quoted should become more educated about such a terrible disease before treating it as an unheard of situation and comparing it to morning sickness.
I lost 26 pounds during my first pregnancy and was hospitalized 6 times for dehydration. Then two and a half years later, I lost 21 pounds durng my second pregnancy and was hospitalized 5 times. I stayed sick for 9 months. I couldn’t even eat ice chips.
I know how she feels. I had three children 20+ years back. I miscarried one. All during the time carrying my babies; I was sick. Crackers didn’t work and even water. With the last one, I was hospitalized 5 times for dehydration. My babies were all fine. I lost so much weight, I looked like a very skinny model(LOL). But after the last full term baby, I called it quits on having more children because I had three that needed me.
The doctors never told me the name of this condition but treated me according to what was known back then. I was fortunate to have a very carry group of doctors.
Best Wishes and enjoy your new baby girl.
The author and editor of this story ought to educate themselves about the difference between morning sickness and hyperemesis gravidarum. Morning sickess is to hyperemesis as a headache is to a brain tumor.
I am thankful Ms. Shaw and her daughter survived. It is unfortunate doctors did not intervene sooner so her baby did not have to be delivered at 28 weeks.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a very serious medical issue that can be a crisis for mother and baby. The FOX doctor and newscaster should have shown more empathy for the patient with this severe illness. HG can last all 9 mos and is much worse than regular morning sickness. It can put mother and baby at severe risk. After 6 mos of severe HG my first daughter was stillborn. Up to that time, I was on five different antinausea pills and finally a picc feeding line with TPN (total nutrition via tube). After 3 mos, I saw my OB every week but it was too late by the time my docs did the best interventions. Too much trauma had occured with the severe weight loss, dehydration, etc. For my second pregnancy, I went to a great high risk pregancy care center at a Boston Hospital. They were much better prepared and knowledgeable. I think the FOX doc could have been a little more educated and compassionate. It was not a news segment to be joking about as he and the commentator did so readily. I was healthy and a normal weight before my pregnancies. HG devastates your body. Fortunately my second daughter was born healthy. I was on IV meds and a picc line for 7.5 mos. Thank goodness for the specialists who know how to treat HG. A foundation focused on info and research for HG is http://www.HER.org , the Hyperemesis Research Foundation. God Bless all moms and families who have suffered through this illness.
Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a very dangerous medical condition. It can put the mother and child at serious risk. I had HG for both my pregnancies. Unfortunately during my first pregnancy the severe vomiting, dehydration and weightloss resulted in my daughter being stillborn at 23 weeks even though I was on 4 anti-nausea drugs and eventually had a picc line for total nutrition. I was seeing my OB every week but effective intervention did not come quickly enough. I think the Fox doc and commentator were much too lighthearted considering how serious an illness this can be. HG can last an entire pregnancy and vomiting can last all day, every day. It is a crisis when you can not keep food down. Mom and baby really suffer. I was a healthy woman of normal weight prior to my pregnancies. I took prenatal vitamins prior to my pregnancies and throughout (as best I could keep them down). Fortunately for my second pregnancy I was referred to high risk OB services at a Boston Hospital with specialists who knew more about HG. The early care was throrough with antinausea meds, picc line for hydration, etc, etc. My second daughter was born healthy and full term. Yet even still during that pregancy I was losing weight and vomiting for 7.5 mos. For more info on HG, visit the Hyperemesis Research Foundation http://www.HER.org.
Hi, Interesting story but no new medical info.
I had suffered from terrible morning sickness in my first two pregnancies. Lately, I had found the perfect cure for morning sickness and it worked — I am now in my third pregnancy
