Kennedy Docs Give Tumor Diagnosis
by Melissa Browne
BOSTON (AP) — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor.
Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat say tests conducted after Kennedy suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma, they said.
His treatment will be decided after more tests but the usual course includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy.

My prayers are with him, I never agreed with his social policies, or thoughts on how to run the goverment, politics aside, I wish him nothing but the best and for perhaps a miracle.
Iam very sad for Ted and his family, they are in our thoughts and prayers. I do not agree with his political views, however when anything like this happens in life you forget about your differences and come together for the entire Kennedy family. He has given a great deal of his life to public service and we as American people must never forget that.
I am shocked, as is my family, by the current news of Ted Kennedy’s illness. I am a Boston native, and the thought of a great man such as Mr Kennedy being so ill, sends shock waves to us all! This is a family and a man that has served his country and country men so well in his many years of service.
The kennedy’s have survived with grace the burdens given to them over the years.
It is important for the kennedy family to know that many people all over our country and other parts of the world, especially those of us with Irish decent, will be praying for his swift recovery.
I know that he will be in my families prayers until his recovery.

SHEP PLEASE TELL TEDDY THAT I HOPE HE DOES NOT MAKE IT. REPEAT—DOES NOT MAKE IT
I heard Senator Kennedy’s diagnosis, and I have very similar feelings that I had on the day that President John Kennedy was shot. “But, why,” I ask myself. God is still on the throne, and still watching over us. He sent Jesus Christ to die for our sins proving that He loves us. We will never understand why these things happen, of course, but we in our faith know that He is watching over us. The Kennedy’s have such great faith, and I know that will bring them through this. I feel sure that any sins that the senator has had in his life, he has asked God, and been forgiven, so should not be judged by anyone. I am Republican, but, laying aside all differences, I really appreciate all the good things he has done for our country.
I wish Teddy the best of luck and send out my love to him and his family. My prayers are with you all!
I feel sorry for anyone that has to fight an illness like a brain tumor, even Ted Kennedy, but what exactly has he ever done for our country that is positive? That one escapes me. Anyone want to enlighten me? Details please.
I don’t agree with the liberal Democrats on any issue, but this is a non-partisan situation. Cancer like this doesn’t care what your party affiliation is…it kills all sides equally. My daughter had a brain lesion removed at age 5, and it was a very frightening time for us all. This is one Republican family who is praying for Senator Kennedy and his family…anyone who wants to play politics now is a sorry excuse for an American. We need to show compassion and concern!
I wish Sen. Kennedy and his family my deepest sympathies for his diagnosis and wish him the best. Several comments on this page have pointed out some anger and hostillity toward the Senator. This is unfortunate. There will come a time where Sen. Kennedy’s career and personal life will be up for debate but it is my opinion that now is not that time. There will be plenty of time to discuss his morality, his involvement in Mary Jo’s death, and his decades long voting record. For now it is right that we wish him all the best….
I feel sorry for his family, and I dont wish anyone to have such a dread disease but…It sounds like Mary Jo may finally have her day with him. America has suffered long enough from his senate seat and his extreme liberal insanity, it is time to return to conservative sanity!
Some classy comments here..grow up people and have some empathy.
As someone that has watched a loved one died from GBM, I would not wish it on my enemy. Prayers for the Senator and his family.
I am a GBM survivor long past the “9 to 18 months”. This month I celebrated 29 months since my diagnosis, and I have a normal quality of life. In fact, since my diagnosis I have written a book, I have been a soloist in four Messiah performances, and I am working toward my black belt in karate. I also run my own business and raise my two kids (ages 3 and 7). I had a complete resection surgery, radiation, and two years of chemotherapy, and I have more hair and energy than my husband (who is healthy)!
I am a staunch Texas conservative who couldn’t be more opposed to Senator Kennedy’s politics. But we are both survivors and children of the same God. I wish him well and keep him and his family in my prayers.
Not one news report has said what type of brain biopsy was used for this initial diagnosis.
Thanks
Any man and his family deserve comfort in these twilight times of his life.
I do not like the man, his politics or much of what he or his family have conjured to “stand for”, but yet in this very time and moment he deserves respect and the best of wishes for what remains for him and those who love him.
God watch over the man …
Ah yes. I see some of the nasty comments on here regarding a dying man. A dying American man who has served his country….regardless of political affiliation. It’s funny how the Right wing “people of God” party always seem to be the ones with such nasty ungod like comments. Typical and quickly vanishing.
I’m not a Ted Kennedy fan and I do believe he has done far more harm than good for our country. But shame on anyone who would not feel empathy for the man regardless of what his life has stood for. Only by the Grace of God there go I.
May God be with Senator Kennedy. I hope and pray for the best. My twin has breast, bone, and brain cancer. I thank God she goes to H. Lee Cancer Center, here in Tampa, FL. I pray for her daily. So, to Senator Kennedy’s family I know he will receive good care and I will pray for his recovery. Miricles happen daily.

I agree with Robert Clark. I disagree with just about every one of Senator Kennedy’s policies, but I will definitely pray for him and his family. I wish them nothing but the best and am praying for a full recovery.
I was happy for a moment when I realized that a strong political foe could be taken out of the arena, but just for a moment. When conservatives start posting nasty comments such as some of the above, we become no better than the haters on The Daily Kos or any other liberal blog. Remember how upset our side was when some bloggers wished death upon Tony Snow? We are better than that. Much better. Don’t let bitterness or anger get the best of us. Say a prayer for Senator Kennedy, for he is a human being and a worthy opponent.
As a Conservative - I don’t agree with his politics. As a Radiation Therapist I empathize for him and his family. This is a tough diagnosis. His and his family’s faith will be shaken I am sure. These are difficult tumors to treat - know you will be cared for by the very BEST in medical science at Mass General or wherever your treatment takes place. Your care team will support you and your family every step of the way. Fighting for one’s life does not take politcal sides. Anyone who comments otherwise on this site is foolish. Clearly they have not been amongst patients and their families who face these terrible circumstances - angels on earth.
My prayers go to the Senator and his family.
Lets not get too maudlin here. I am not and have never been a fan of Kennedy. I am sorry for he and his family. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, but I don’t agree with the Senator on much of anything. The left didn’t cut Charlton Heston or Ronald Reagan any slack when they were dying. I lost my wife to cancer. Hers spread to her brain from another site. The Dr. told me the usual prognosis from the onset of symptoms of a brain cancer is six months, which was almost exactly how it worked out. Every once in awhile someone beats it, but it’s got to be a long shot on a guy his age, with his medical history.
Although I am a lifelong Republican, tonight Sen. Kennedy we are all Democrats and stand with you in prayer, comfort and recovery.
At Kennedy’s age the next treatment is to make his last days (whatever number they may be) as comfortable as possible.
Prolonged misery with radiation and chemotherapy is not appropriate in this case in my opinion.
A couple of years ago I had to let go of my mother. It wasn’t easy but it was her time.
To those who know and love Mr. Kennedy, let go. Just let go!
This is not the same as give-up. This is simply saying let him go and be in peace and not have to suffer needlessly.
This is very sad for a family that has been racked with tragedy. My prayers are with Senator Kennedy and his family.
My dad died from this exact same cancer 20 years ago; he passed away nine months after the first seizure. This is an extremely debilitating, not to mention fatal, cancer. Regardless of your political views, it is not something I’d wish on anyone, no matter how much I disliked him or her.
It must be quite a shock for Senator Kennedy and the voters of Massachusetts to realize that he is not immortal.
Part and parcel of his Catholicism is the Day of Judgment. I wonder what God will say to him about Chappaquiddick.
each of us are given a finite life.i totally disagreed with teds politics as with all of his brothers.having said that i did not nor do not wish such ills to befall them nor him.may god protect him and take him gently into that dark night….tom smith
Feel sorry to poor Ted?? Nope…look what he’s done alright,..Mary Jo, don’t worry that he’ll be up there with you….he’s going down! Finally justice,.
Mary Jo is waiting for you, Teddy, and she’s got something to say to you. Oh, wait, you’re going the other way. Never mind. Don’t forget your fireproof shoes.
My prayers are with the Kennedy family as they would be for any family going through this. I hope Mary Jo Kopeckne is waiting for him when he tries filibustering his way into heaven.
I can’t believe all the “hoopla” over this. Here’s a man who has never held a “real” job in his life. He’s been on the public dole throughout his ENTIRE career in Washington; and yet the very same people who pay his bloated salary (say TAXES) are the very ones shedding all these ridiculous tears. Hey democrats; wouldn’t YOU like to have top notch healthcare for your entire life?!? How about employment virtually guaranteed for life?!? Hmmmm?? “The Liberal Lion” give me a break. More like do as I say, not as I do. Looks like this is the last stop on the “Gravy Train Special” Mr. Kennedy.
Sad for him and his family. However, I can’t say it is sad for our country. The media has jumped on this and spoken of this man as though he were God. Done more for this country than most presidents they’ve said….give me a break! He’s not done nearly as much for his country as his country has done for him!!
“Glioma is a term that is used for any tumor that arises in the brain…”
Actually, the term for a tumor that arises in the brain would be a Primary Brain Tumor.
A Glioma is a tumor that arises from the glial cells (of the nervous system).
I lost my mother to GBM several months ago. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.
I want to wish Senator Kennedy the very best. He and his family are in my prayers. I have long admired all the Kennedy’s.
Our prayers go out to the Kennedy family. I hope he recovers and retires so he can no longer damage our country.
Senator Kennedy has out lived his usefulness. It is for the greater good of the people. Our party needs more young fresh minds like Obama. Make room for the NEW Democrats.
My only prayer is that Ted comes to know Jesus Christ before it’s too late…
I was diagnosed with the same tumor and same location in 1996. They did surgery, radiation and chemo. It is not all doom and gloom for Ted. I still here 12 years later!
As a conservative/moderate Democrat, I agree with very few of his liberal stances but I wish him the best. The greatest thing he did was pass the Family Leave Bill, I’m grateful to him for that. This family has suffered a lot of sorrow my prayers are with them. However, his abandoning Mary Jo Kopechne to die was unforgivable by most, myself included.
i’ll bet the kopeckne family is just having a big ol’ party, no? this guy has completely screwed the taxpayers out of millions of $$ and he’s about to get what he deserves. and what’s all this talk about god?!? people, there is no god - it’s something made up to make you feel good about yourselves. praying and talking and hoping to god never got anybody anything!!
Time to retire! Mary Jo thinks so! Go home Teddy!
Oh My God people! Listen to yourselves! And THIS is America? You all need to grow up!
It sounds like if you could kill someone and get away with it, you would. THAT is NOT the America that our forefathers intended it to be! Your rude comments are REALLY not appropriate nor appreciated by those who truly value ALL life! I certainly do not agree with Kennedy’s politics, and I certainly do not agree with free health care for the politicians while the rest of us struggle, but I do not wish harm on Ted Kennedy. Neither do I wish Hell for ANYBODY!, and neither should YOU!
The only good Kennedy is a dead Kennedy. The sooner he expires, the better.
Kennedy, then Carter then Moore. A perfect trifecta of death that will make this country a better place.
I am sick hearing people praise him, he did more harm to peoples lives in his years than any other person in politics. HOW MANY lives did Ted Kennedy destroy!!!!! How many of the poor and downtrodden has he put there!!! Ted’s oil wells are raking in the profits while Americans starve and what has he done? Teds whacky liberal environmental policies put us in the crisis we are in now, of course its the same polices that made him RICH with Venezeula OIL! Thats why TEDDY didn’t want drilling or new refineries. The Kennedy’s got rich on bootleg liquer that killed people, ROTGUT! The apple didn’t fall from from daddy Joe kennedy’s tree. I feel no pity for a man who has so profoundly destroyed peoples lives, he is not a lion but a hyenna! The same man who verbally spews hate speech and lies and denounce’s the truth as hate speech.
I was so saddened yesterday when I heard his diagnosis. I lost my father 6 yrs ago (5/9/02) to a glioblastoma. It is a very sad death and I wish much comfort to his family and to him. They have a VERY tough road ahead of them. God Bless the Kennedys during this time.
Not a fan, per se. But this is not a laughing matter for anyone.
None of you have a right to judge what happened in 1969.
TO S. Fitzpatrick @ 9:56 COMMENTS:
That is great news thank you for sharing. God willing may you have at least 12 more years. Still I hope for the doom and gloom for Ted Kennedy.
my thoughts and prayers to senator kennedy and his family
Listen up……What is wrong with the news media…..enough already we are sorry for the news regarding Sen. Kennedy but respect his and the family’s privacy….I don’t give a rats behind what these doctors you produce have to tell me about his prognosis. When you get Almighty God to appear on your shows then that will be breaking and undisputable news….in the meantime leave Kennedy and his family alone….that he has a serious condition is enough info…..ask for prayers and go on to other things.
I have no sympathy for him, because I know the truth about the swimmer.
Now things are beginning to make some sence. What else could have caused Ted to have such stupid political ideas?
Better dead than Ted.
Put Ted Kennedy to Sleep.
Do it now!
The simple truth is we all pass on when God wants us to and not a day earlier. The Senator has survived much throughout his life and given much to many, and learned much as well. I am confident that God will protect him now as He protect all of us in times of trouble and illness. If God still has work for Kennedy to do here, He will make sure that he is capable of doing that work and doing it well..
I agree with what Rush said the other day. We are better off with one less Kennedy. I say good riddance to his liberal scheming and his increasingly eratic views. We can only pray that the people of Massachusetts will come to their senses and fill that seat with one of the GOP’s own. Good riddance Mr. Kennedy. We all know what god has in store for the likes of you.
As an American I am ashamed at some of the comments by people on this site. Paul Rossi and GSJ. Your comments are sick. I am sad for the Kennedy family. Sen. Kennedy has served our country for many years. We don’t have to agree on his ideals, but, we can agree on the fact that this is a human being and he should be allowed the dignity that we all deserve. I hope his family isn’t reading this blog. Sen. Kennedy, I wish the best to you and your family.
regarding the rude comments, I can only imagine what would be said by those who lean left if this was George W. Bush….oh, but that is different. Sorry.
I suppose one should be amazed that so many have posted such cruel comments. One may disagree with someone’s political views (I have been diametrically opposed to many of the views espoused by Senator Kennedy), but one has to be a completely unfeeling moron to do anthing other than to hope that Kennedy will not suffer and that he and his family will be able to spend many good times together in whatever time he has remaining. It is not up toanyone other than God to judge the full emasure of a human’s life. Those who feel that they possess that ability should remember the maxim “judge not lest ye be judged”!
You know…
it’s people like the haters on this site that are causing all the problems in our country today.
some of us value human life over partisan politics. i just knew that i would log on here and see all the “decent christian” folk tripping over each other to be the first one to cast a stone at senator kennedy. whether you are brainwashed by the right or the left, he is a man who has devoted his entire life to public service…more than any of you have done sitting on your butts, fanning the flames of hate from the comfort of your own homes.
shame on you all.
“Do we operate under a system of equal justice under the law? Or is there one system for the average citizen and another for the high and mighty?”
Ted Kennedy - 1973
Keeping Mr Kennedy and his family in my prayers - May GOD heal him and give his family strength during these difficult times.
As one of the many who responded, I do not share Senator Ted Kennedy’s political views. I share the same love of country, duty and honor. Most important we share the same God. Such a dedicated and kind man to his family and people of MASS. I pray for his recovery as we need him to continue to serve as a great American in the Senate to provide another perspective.
I hope he wins the sailboat race this week!
I really feel for the family… they are going to go through hell later on… my daughter died of a brain tumor when she was just 15 yrs old….she lost control over many of her functions before she passed away. this type of brain tumor does a lot of damage usually very quickly. I know what kind of conversations are going on his family right about now….what this tumor does to a person is so sad….
I really feel for his family…what will occur later will be awful. This type of tumor does some nasty to a person…..my daughter passed away when she was just 15 yrs old of a similiar tumor…His family really needs to be prepared for what’s going to happen to him.
You know all this hatred for a man that served this country for most if not all of his life. He and his deceased brothers fought for civil rights, the poor - people who was disadvantaged. The ones on here with the negatives - SHAME on you EVIL FOOLS!!
I for one remember my mother crying endlessly after the assination of Robert Kennedy, I was only about 6yrs old but I remember that and her crying about Dr. King. Of course I was too young when John was killed. These Great Giants were men who fought for the rights of innocent people and Ted continued by devoting his life to some of these many causes. Why would you hate a man for that? I hear some say he’s an alcoholic, My God!! You’d be an alcoholic too after what this man has endured. He lost both bothers in their prime and had to take on the father role for 2 sets of children. He attended every birth, graduation, every wedding…..He’s HAS BEEN THE ROCK OF HIS FAMILY.
When JFK Jr died, I found myself like my mom….crying my eyes out. This family has been plaugued with such sorrow but they have triumphed through it all.
My family and I love Ted & The Kennedy Family and wish all the best to them. Our thoughts & prayers go out today, tomorrow and always!! GODBLESS!!

goes to show what i’ve always believed - there are a**holes on both sides. i’m really disgusted and disappointed in some of you so called conservatives. have some compassion for a dying man and his family. you don’t have to like him or agree with him. i don’t. glad i’m in the middle and independent.
The ultimate term limit?
Well it’s about time! Now he’ll FINALLY get out of the senate. He’s been nothng but a pain and how that man keeps getting re-elected is beyond me! Good riddens! I don’t wish anything bad on anyone and I do hope he can reflect back on his life and look at what he has done and maybe this illness will change his heart and mind.
Kennedy deserves this, ever since he killed that poor girl in his car going off a bridge from drunk driving I have no respect for the man. What goes around comes around.
The” ultimate term limit”?
Adear friend also has this so I know it is a bad time for him and his family. I have never liked him and cant stand all the glowing praise he gets. (people must have forgotten the murder he committed) but I feel for his family that he supports.
Although I am not a Ted Kennedy fan, my thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and all those suffering from cancer.
I hope that he will look to the good of our country and step down when it is appropriate for him to do so. There is something said to having “quiet dignity” and it is impossible for this to occur while still active in the senate. The media circus that will entail, will not be for the best of Mr. Kennedy or our country.
HE BETTER GET READY. OL’ JOE KENNEDY BOUGHT HIS WAY OUT OF HIM KILLING MARY JO KOEPECHNIE SO MANY YEARS AGO BUT HE CAN’T BUY HIS MAKER OFF. SOONER OR LATER, HE AND OJ, THE CLINTONS (VINCE FOSTERS MYSTERIOUS SUICIDE) WILL ALL HAVE TO FACE THEIR MAKER AND THEIR LIES WON’T WASH.
TED KENNEDY HAS HURT THIS COUNTRY MIGHTELY OVER HIS MANY YEARS IN CONGRESS. I HATE TO SEE ANYONE GET WHAT HE’S GOT WITH THE DEATH SENTENCE IT CARRIES. HE NEEDS TO GET RIGHT WITH GOD IN SHORT ORDER. IT’S TOO LATE TO UNDO ALL THE CANCEROUS LEGISLATION HE’S BEEN AUTHOR TO LO THESE MANY YEARS.
First I want to apologize for all the mean spirited comments my fellow conservatives have made. I am ashamed of them. They are totally uncalled for at this time.
My real purpose is to ask why it is incurable. In my state, we have a Gamma Knife, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_knife and do inoperable brain tumors as an outpatient service. A quick search suggest there is at least a dozen of them in our country. There are some cyclotrons around the country also doing about the samething.
Ted - You need to repent. Mary Jo is not in the place, which you are going to spend eternity.
Well, as a 41 year old mom all I can say is that this man has been a senator my ENTIRE life and in what way has he helped to make this a better world for me and my children?? The world is more frightening then it was when I was born in 1967. On a list of ten people who have destroyed the moral shape of the world, yes world, he is among the top three! He has made a mockery of the Catholic faith and all I can say is may God have mercy on his soul. The blood of the innocent slaughtered unborn babies that he helped shed through his public support of abortion “rights”, is on his soul.
I read where TK is converting to islam so he can blow himself up and requisition 72 virgins (of course, paid for by taxpayers). BTW, I think he has finally found a diet that will work.
My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family…very sad.
I have to be honest I have never been a big fan of Ted Kennedys, but right or wrong he has been a hugh contributer of the US Congress and to the United States. He has given so much to this Country, wither you agree with his policys or not he has devoted his life to trying to make things better for all Americans. So many I see are being so unkind! Have you devoted your whole life to the Country that you live in? He needs to get right with God! Who are you to be the judge of that! I’m not here to judge anyone that is not up to me or you! That is between him and God and no one else!! All I know is that this is a very sad Day for all Americans! Like him or not ! We need to keep Ted, his family and all America in our prayers! I pray that he and his family will have the strength in this very difficult time. I know this is a very strong family but they need our prayers. This is not the time to be hateful! or to Judge him or his family That is NOT what God would want us to do. I understand he is not perfect but neither IS anyone. You that have not sined cast the first stone!! God bless Ted Kennedy, his family and our Country! WE NEED ALL THE PRAYERS WE CAN GET AND RIGHT NOW SO DOES THE KENNEDY FAMILY!! L. Davis IL.
Ted Kennedy has served himself well throughout his career. Other than supporting civil rights, what has he ever done for the good of the country? It seems to me that he has voted against everything that’s good for American citizens, and voted for everything that’s bad. Just look at his voting record. Just because he is sick now, doesn’t mean that he is now some big martyr. And as for you people who are criticizing others because they are telling the truth about this man, how did you react when Ronald Reagan or any other conservative had to go through their own illness and death? I’ve seen more hatred on these blogs from liberals, than I’ve ever seen from conservatives. We just aren’t looking through rose colored glasses when it comes to the Kennedy family, especially Teddy.
