Family Fights to Stay in America to Care for Sick Child
A 9-year-old girl is battling an array of illnesses while her parents are fighting the family’s deportation, worried that the child wouldn’t receive good medical care outside the United States.
Lil Mejia was born in 1998 in the Dominican Republic following a difficult pregnancy. She stopped breathing shortly after birth, and seizures and pneumonia followed. She weighed less than 15 pounds on her first birthday.
Six years later, after many medical complications, her parents obtained temporary visas and brought Lil to Grand Rapids, where doctors at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital stabilized her condition: a rare combination of severe asthma, allergies, chronic lung disease and hormone deficiencies.
Now that their visas have expired, deportation proceedings could force the Mejia family to leave the country. They were relieved when a hearing set for this month in Detroit was postponed, giving them more time to build their case.
“I don’t have words to say how much my daughter means to me,” Giselle Mejia, 33, told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Wednesday. “We gave up everything for her.”

So, how is this family paying for all of these medical bills? Do they have insurance or are we footing the bill? Being in healthcare, I see many, many illegals here in this country and we are paying the bills for their health issues and births. I don’t agree with it, especially when there are children in this country that have a right to be here and don’t have the things they need.
If you break the rules for one, you have to break them for all. So now Levin wants to naturalize all immigrants who overstay their visas for medical reasons? It’s not our fault that proper medical treatment wasn’t available in their own country. Once she was stabilized, the family should have been sent home, period. Fighting to stay two years after your visa expired a second time one of the problems it’s going to be difficult to deal with the rest of the illegals in this country. I’m sorry, but I have lost all concern for illegal immigrants and for any immigrants crossing our southern border for whatever reason nor do I care what happens to them. Let La Raza pay the bills and send them somewhere to continue their treatment since they are such big advocates of illegal immigration.
This child and her family should have been returned to their own country when she was “stabilized”. The fact that her country is ill equipped to handle her illness and we are, doesn’t justify overstaying a second visa. The time to pursue an extension was before the visa expired, not two years after. As far as I’m concerned at this point, they are illegals and should be dealt with accordingly, meaning deportation. Now another politician (Levin) is going to throw another wrench into the already broken immigration policies in place. I’m quite sure this doctor treating the child was well aware of the families immigration status, so he or she is partly to blame and should be prosecuted for aiding and abetting illegal immigrants. Or, should we open all the borders and invite all the ailing people in the world to come for treatment? I think not! Easy solution, send the family back to wherever they came from and forget about it.
Why would parents of a child with severe illness have TWO more children? To increase their odds of remaining in the U.S.? As the parents don’t work, who paid for the births of the two children? The U.S. taxpayers, via Medicaid? As the two children born in the U.S. are citizens under mis-interpretation of the 14th Amendment,do they receive taxpayer-funded social services? WIC/food stamps/Medicaid? This story elicits as much symapthy from me as the illegal alien in California awaiting her FOURTH liver transplant, courtesy of the American taxpayers.
There are Americans in need of medical care that struggle financially;we cannot care for every ill person on the planet.
LEAVE THIS FAMILY ALONE, AND ALLOW THEM TO GET THE BEST TREATMENT AVAILABLE FOR THEIR DAUGHTER. OUR COUNTRY HAS “BIGGER FISH TO FRY” REGARDING IMMIGRATION ISSUES!
Well, maybe we should pick and choose the laws we uphold here… If you break the law, you should be punished accordingly. If they are here illegally, then they should be deported. PERIOD. I am a nurse at an Urgent Care facility and I see, all day every day, folks like them who have MA and are constantly in our office. I pay my taxes so that they can have free insurance, and then I have to work on them on my own dime????
I agree with Sheri. What if it was your kid? If the parents cannot win using our judicual system they could best love thier child by letting an american family adopt her and continue her care. They can remain active in her life via visits and other forms of communication. I saw this happen in a foster home I was in. It totally saved a little girls life! Just imagine….what if it were YOU!!!!
Heartless, greedy people. Send the girl to me and I will make sure she has a great life. That is what God, the Universe, your consicene, or what have you expects of us all as adults.
Wake up and realize that you are just one blow in the head away from being a vegtable. You are just one step off the side walk into becoming a parapaligic. Then what? How would you want the world to respond to you?
Its time to reassess your values as a HUMAN BEING. Fish and turtles leave their young. But even bees tirelessly take care of thier young. Other animal species will adopt young found without a parent. What is wrong with you? So she was born across an imaginary border. She is a child who has not yet had the chance to pay taxes. As I said, there are a ton of great hearted Americans who would give her their best.
signing off,
Disgusted
Who is paying the extensive medical bills? We cant take in every sick person in the world!
We should take in every sick person in the world no matter the cost. We can pay for this by raising everyones taxes. Makes me feel all warm inside, dont you? While we are at it we can feed all the worlds hungry. YES! Tell you what, just take all of my money from my paycheck and just take care of everyone else but the one that earned it.
Yes from a emotional standpoint, taking care of others health needs is wonderful. But the fact of the matter is that that bill has to be paid by US tax payers. Our government is already WAY too big of a wasteful bureaucracy. Providing universal healthcare to even just our legal citizens is feeding this wasteful beast. American need to start thinking realistically instead of romantic fairy tale dreams about some endless supply of money that fixes everyones problems in the world.
kick the illegals OUT!
I think these people have to get another chance to help their doughter get well.As much as who is paying for her medical we or them, please we are paying so many things for diffrent situations and I do not think we ever thought about that. That is a girl fighting for her life and she is innocent for her health condition or her financial one.God brought her in life and gave us a chance to help her and show that we are still God’s children.
JUST THINK IF YOU AND YOUR CHILD WAS LIKE THIS FAMILY.
God says:behave to the others as you wanted them to behave to you.
That is a human being life.Allow them to stay till the girl is going to have a definite answer from the doctors, till her last hope for life.
God bless you and God bless America.
Send her (& family) back to their 3d world country. Who’s footing this families bills? The good old AMERICAN TAXPAYER! There’s a billion sad stories in this old world. . . they all cannot come here for treatment! America for Americans! Think how much could have been done for real Americans with the money wasted on this patheticly ill little girl. Send her home!
I forgot, they are not illegal, they were lawfully admitted to USA, they were dilligent seeking status change, they are not hiding, they have alien numbers etc. they just happen to be out of status since january 08 and there’s no easy way to revert that.
Lujan and Camacho…aren’t they hispanic surnames? we are tougher indeed on our own race.
Were your parents born in USA by any chance?
Mean greg2 !
We, the American taxpayer are very commpassionate, but when are we going to look after our own people? Everyday more and more illegal immigrants pour across our border, fly in on a tourist visa or even jump ship. Many of these individuals have hidden illnesses from third world countries and and have already been alerted to the fact that health care is free for them here. All they have to do is walk into an emergency room and the good old taxpayers, will foot the bill.
Our government skims quietly of your wage packet 356 billion dollars, to support illegal low income workers annually and appease big business and that cost will become a pittance. However this is just a small portion of the enormous cost, that has been going on behind your backs for decades. This doesn’t include education, free health care or prison services and much more not listed.
Send them packing. Break the law pay the price.
I recommend the Mejia family to travel to Cuba, that´s where the best doctors in the world are, its not expensive, and besides, cubans are not xenophobics as some americans are. I am sorry to say that US doctors are no good as well as their social security and medicare plans.
tired of the hispanic power t-shirts, tired of paying higher taxes and medical bills to support illegal population? KICK THEM OUT!
Sheri I really do want you to know this its YOUR tax dollars hard earned and spent for you by all of these illegals. I just want you to know that I really like the use of mine for my fellow citizens and ones who came here legally like all of my immigrant friends. I know that in my life that is just starting in the business field and I would really like to use them for my own benefit, and im going to be honest to you all of you who agree with putting this family in health care that is hard earned by REAL citizens, NOTHING IS FREE you must work for it and you must pay the price like my family that came here from Ireland and else where but you have to remember EVERYONE is an immigrant.
I too would like to know who is footing yhe bills. We can no longer afford to treat these people here. There are U>S. citizens who are turned away every day because of the cost of caring for illegals. UTMB Galveston has stated that in their oncology dept. they are spending $10,000-40,000 a month just on the drugs for each illegal cancer patient. Since thy are illegal, they are not eligible for sponsorship by the drug companies. This means they are turning away 10, 20, 30, 40 citizens for every alien.
It’s just too bad, but it is not the fault or the responsibility of the American people for the health problems of the world!
ely – Yes the names are hispanic. All that aside, my point and the fact in my situation is that my father had to take the long path to citizenship, and as far as I’m concerned so should every other immigrant. My point is that once the child was stabilized, the parents should have put their daughter on a plane and went home to continue any treatment need. The parent’s first priority might have been to save their daughter, but since they and only they let their visas expire, it’s not the taxpayers fault and we shouldn’t have to continue to pay bills that will NEVER be paid back. I just think is a damn shame that we have children and adults in this country that are in the same or worse condition than this little girl and we won’t even take care of them first. It’s examples like this that only solidify my position on illegals and illegal immigration. IF I was the medical facility, I’d box up her treatment records and put an invoice on the top of the pile and send it back to wherever they came from for payment. Think that will ever happen?
Dear Greg, one of the problems of the press is that sometimes they don’t explain accurately. I’m personal friend of the Mejias. They didn’t let their visas expire, that was an error of the reporter and they have suffered for it. Before expiration of their visas they timely applied for the green card in a category known as EB2-NIW because Mr. Mejia is a computer genius. They applied before march 2006, the petition was denied on September 2006, (their former attorney was inexpert) they appealed on October 2006 and were waiting for an answer that they finally got on January 2008.
They went thru the Bureaucracy which is not easy to deal with and specially after the painful 9/11. It hurts me to read all the people comments. They don’t know the whole story. I encourage you to read the whole article because there’s only a couple of paragraph here.
Mr. Mejia is been volunteering at the American Red Cross saving then thousands and thousands of dollars, money that they could invest in the community. He is very committed to keep on improving the technology there.
They are not sitting at home waiting to be served, no.
Mr. Mejia’s immediate family reside in USA, his sisters are citizens, his parents are green card holders.
This family is suffering and people only think about taxes, venting their unhappiness on a little girl as if all their problems are going to be solved if they are deported.
I have known this family for a few years now,and my girl scout troop wants to do something to help. Lil is an absolute darling little girl. America has done wonders for her health and going back to her country will mean certain death!!! How could anyone want that to happen? I understand her treatment is costly, and we have plenty of sick people. But we are talking about a innocent little girl here. The story in the press wasn`t completly accurate. This little girl should get the best care possible. I understand we can`t take care of everyone, and we can`t have illegal people in our country, but this family was allowed here legally and our system has let the visa expire. This family is in a unique situation, believe me-they do thier fair share! Did you happen to pay attention to the fact that Lils dad vollunteers for the AMERICAN RED CROSS,saving them THOUSANDS of DOLLARS??!!! Thier church friends are giving the family money, clothes, food ect.. so you should know they are not getting “ALL OF OUR MONEY” This family would help others if they were able, and my girls and I will help in any way we can, because we promised to serve God and help others at all times and live by the girl scout law-part of which is to be KIND and CONSIDERATE!!
Let’s face it, America is dead. God bless Mexico is more like it. As far as the little girl, Deportation across the nation!
How about Americans that died because our system was overloaded by foreign invaders!
My mother, for example. THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE!!!
“bethany” bleeding heart liberal says bring ‘em all in.Tens of millions of illegals are flooding the borders .,stripmining the American taxpayers 400 billions dollars a year for foodstamps,WIC.HUD housing, medical, education, jails, etc.Who the h*** are you to take food out of my kids mouth and give it to foreign nationals from Mexico who spit in our faces? Some people are getting to the point of buying food or filling the gas tank. Who the h*** are you? I’m tired of reading about 3 year old girls raped. I’m tired of drunk illegal Mexicans killing our promising young people. I’m sick of the stinking cops and their sanctuary cities. And the greedy business people who won’t pay a living wage just import millions of impoverished, low I.Q. third world scum.We need a double fence with concertina razor-wire with patriotic Americans with automatic weapons on the guard towers.
Here we go again, attempting to place a guilt trip on U. S. citizens by “using and innocent child” to
gain their neferious ends. The fault is that of the criminal parents-who knew their child’s medical
condition all along. They panned to overstay their visa and use their sick child’s condition to get to
stay in this country. Look again at Ms.Kristi’s & ely’s posts .First, which “temporary” visa allows a family to remain here “for a few years?”[3 years, 6+3=9] Yet she has known them that long.Second, if the father is such a genius and his family are citizens and green card holders, how can it be that he & they never seem to have known that “a strong desire to live here and to steal
expensive medical treatment from U.S. citizens” is wrong and ILLEGAL! There is such a thing as
“false guilt” [blaming the innocent to make them unjustly feel bad so they will do what you want them to do]. We NorteAmericanos are a “compassionate” people.but at least some of us are not Stupid! This incident is suspicious for sure. Illegal Aliens are already costing us U.S. taxpayers up to $2-300 Billion a year plus lost jobs, and 25 of our citizens being murdered and killed in accidents by the illegals every day. Oh, add to that daily, at least eight of OUR CHILDREN are being sexually abused by illegals. Now, I want to ask, Who is going to exhibit “Compassion to all of the U. S. citizens whose lives are being taken and/or vitally disrupted–plus property destroyed?” Lately, “home invasions” [felony burglaries while people are at home usually with weapons ]are multiplying–and guess who is leading the pack of the “invasions?” Yep, those who have already “invaded” OUR Country. I agree with my fellow U. S. citizens [native &naturalized] who say “stablize the child and deport them all. Then put them in prison if they come back. That is what OUR immigration law stipulates. The Rule of Law is the basis of the United States. All we need now are leaders courageous to enforce our laws.
I feel the same as most people here in the US. Illegals come here for one reason, money. They can get something for nothing here. Our political system has allowed it based upon sympathy. It is time to cut the cord. We cannot keep funding the world. Although I do feel bad for this little girl that is beside the fact. Ship her and her family back.
I agree that it is time to start taking care of our own people who are dying daily for lack of money for healthcare to save them.
I think since marria ferro thinks that we and our doctors are so bad that She should accompany this family to cuba where she would be so much happier.
To Prot..No we are NOT all immigrants, some of us have been here before America,We made have been force to live somewhere else, But WE ARE STILL HERE !!!
