Dr. Manny’s Notes: ‘Miracles’ of Modern Medicine
Recently, two very interesting cases making headlines have brought to light some of the greatest advances in modern medicine. These stories, touted as ‘Medical Miracles’ remind us why we as doctors keep searching for answers and of the gift that makes it all worth while; the gift of life.
There are many conditions that can arise during the course of pregnancy that may cause concern. At one time, we would have to wait until the baby was born in order to try to save the baby or to save the limb. But now, more and more research is being done and more interest is being taken in an effort to fix these issues in-utero.
In the first case, Australian surgeons are being credited for saving the leg of an unborn child by operating on her while the mother was just 22 weeks pregnant.
This baby had a condition called amniotic band syndrome. This is a condition where the limbs, hands or feet of a fetus become entangled in bands of tissue, cutting off blood flow. And in this particular case, both legs were in danger of being naturally amputated in the womb. Luckily, surgeons were able to use a very thin, telescopic instrument to zap away at those adhesions with a laser and free the limbs of baby Leah.
This shows you how far we have come in using minimally invasive procedures to deal with a problem that in the past would have meant major complications for this child.
The other case is even more interesting because it’s more aggressive. At a hospital in Texas, Little Macie McCartney was welcomed into the world not once — but twice.
Macie had a benign tumor of the lower spine, probably something that we call a teratoma; a soft tissue tumor that’s benign, but very vascular. When these tumors grow in a small child, they begin to take away the blood supply from the fetus, which often results in congestive heart failure. Remarkably, surgeons were actually able to partially remove Macie from her mother’s womb to perform the surgery that saved her life. When they were done, they put her back in her mother’s womb to grow for another 10 weeks, with no further complications.
However, field of prenatal surgery is still in its infancy stage. For years we’ve been trying to tackle these issues, but we have encountered many problems. One of the major risks when performing surgery on a fetus is premature delivery. Sometimes, when doctors attempt to do an operation while the baby is still in the womb, they ultimately end up doing more damage because the baby is born prematurely or they lose the pregnancy completely.
These kinds of life-threatening complications make our access to research and outcomes in this area of surgery quite limited. In order to get to the baby, you have to go through the mother, so there are 2 lives at risk here, and ethical implications often come into play. Other limitations are evident in the instruments available for the types of procedures necessary to repair the damage caused by a congenital anomaly.
But none-the-less, the field continues to grow. In fact, there are many facilities around the country that are currently doing these procedures under very strict protocol and criteria.
So these are the kinds of surgical miracles that are shaping the face of reproductive medicine. But again there are still going to be limitations. Not every malformation can be repaired in-utero. We as doctors must make decisions by closely examining both the physical health of the mother and the benefits of performing prenatal surgery when a life—or possibly 2 lives—hang in the balance.

I am confused…….so it’s (the fetus/baby) when the mother/doctor wants it to be…..when they don’t want it to be, then we can suck the fetus’ brains out and rip it violently from it’s mother’s womb in partial birth abortion….if we have made these “Miracles’ of Modern Medicine”, why is abortion still accepted?? Why is it ok to Murder the baby in utero when it’s inconvenient, but ok to save the baby when it’s convenient?? A baby is a baby is a baby—and there is never a good reason to chemically burn a baby in utero with a hypertonic saline solution, or to take a scalpel and cut the baby in utero into little pieces, or take a vacuum device and suck/rip the baby violently out of a mother’s womb…..these are all widely accepted abortion methods…..so where’s the “Miracle”?? Come on people…wake up….have we become so cold hearted? are our hearts and minds so black that we are blind to the truth?
Bravo Annie! I was thinking the same thing while reading this article!
Bravo Annie! I was thinking the same thing while reading this article!!
I completely agree with you Annie. A child is not a choice. Only God can give life to a human. And that point happenes at conception. At that point, that HUMAN has a soul. People will take enormous risks, some with very dire consequences or low percentages of the child living, all for the sake of not having an abnormal child. How do they know that this childs problems could not become a blessing in the future. The child with Downs Syndrome, Spina Bifida, or any other disorder is not a burden. Maybe, this child was meant for you so that you coudl learn some humility, strength, and become less self-centered. The Lord will provide…
“The person murdered through abortion has the same right to life as those who conspire to kill him—his mother, the abortionist, and the politician who legislates the “right” to kill. To speak of one’s right over one’s body as justification for abortion is sophistry. There is not one body but two; not one person but two, both with an equal right to life.”

How Can the Culture of Death Be Overcome?
By Msgr. Vincent Foy
If the news media, including Dr. Manny and the other physicians who comment on the news, had a DEEP commitment to truth and honesty, THEY would start making these observations in print and on air, so that the mind set of the masses would be changed. So few think for themselves and therefore see that OF COURSE it is a person, whether or not it is a ‘convenient’ person. The world needs to start hearing the truth: a person is a person no matter how small, no matter what stage of human development they are currently in: fetus, infant, teenager, mid-life, geriatrics.
While it is an unfortunate reflection on our society, the truth is: the news media does influence the thinking of the masses. Therefore, they have a GREAT moral responsibility to start linking reports such as these to the crime/reality/truth/simple observation about abortion. They could even save face, by exagerrating slightly and saying, “We didn’t know these things in 1973 when Roe v. Wade was decided, but NOW we do.” They need to stand up and start REPORTING that the pre-natal infant/fetus is a normal stage of development of all human persons.
Since Roe v. Wade is based on woman’s right to privacy about HER OWN body, unless she has 4 legs, 2 brains, 4 eyes, 2 different blood types (you get the idea), she does NOT have the right to take another person’s life.
Well, I could go and on. But for today, those are my observations.
I applaud you also Annie! Thank you for speaking up for the unborn. I do appreciate that they are trying to help them before they are born and make sure they do have a chance at life, but a baby is not a choice it is a LIFE and they have every right to live it. It is not our choice to take their body, spirit and breath away and just dump them like they were yesterday’s trash. Thanks again Annie and keep the pro-life movement going!!!!
How did an article about medical advancements turn into another anti-abortion debate. I didn’t see the word abortion in this article at all.
There is coming a day that the very people that are performing the abortions will say “enough is enough, I can no longer take the life of this baby for profit any longer.” The medical field knows the truth of when life begins in the mothers womb. Polititions know the truth of when life begins in the mother’s womb. It seems the only reason their heads are turned the other way is for their bank account. Abortion is big business.
It’s amazing that common sense can apply, yet be ignored. We celebrate the precious life of the children in this story and pat the doctors on the back for a job well done, but totally ignore that fact that we have millions of murders every year in our country. How can we be so blind and helpless as a people and not have the ability to stand up and make a change to a corrupt and blind system? Everyday our own children go off to government mandated education/brainwashing that dictates political correctness and the ‘right to choose’, without thought to the ignorance of the situation at hand. And sadly, this country will probably elect a man who will push to continue the ignorance of the population from the truth. Children are precious lives and we have no right to kill them in the womb and mearly call them an inconvenient ‘fetus’, because we are too selfish to take some personal responsibility.
My two cents.
Brian
Jameela, there is no debate. So far, you are the only one posting who doesn’t seem to see the gross contradiction of pursuing techniques that save the pre-born while savagely murdering millions of them each year.
Abortion is a dirty word, it is a dirty thing and it is going to help take this country down in the not to distant future if we don’t wake up.
“God is not mocked, nor doth He sleep.”
Um, Jameela, the word ABORTION was not in the article. The word BABY and LIFE and -even 2 lives- and REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE were used. The point being: a life is ALWAYS a life, and should never be taken by abortion. A life cannot be a life when it is convenient (therefore saved by miraculous medical intervention) and NOT a life when someone decides it is inconvenient or unwanted or unplanned. Those 2 things cannot exist simultaneously. The ONLY way abortion can be OK is if murder is OK. As long as you know abortion is killing a life, AND society says it is fine to MURDER, then there is no problem. The problems lies in believing the LIE that a baby is a baby only when it is convenient for it to be a baby, and it is a blob of tissue when it is convenient to believe that. A society only succeeds when it defends the most vulnerable and voiceless members and it goes down hill when it chooses who lives and who dies.
The supreme court declared African American slaves to be subhuman in the Dred Scott v. Sanford case in 1856 and therefore it was ok to buy, sell, own and even kill them, since they were property. Was that correct or did the supreme court make a mistake then? Some people rose up and spoke for them when they had no legal voice. Was that the right thing to do back then? Is it not the right thing to do again today for another very real and voiceless people group?
NJ
It is wonderful what modern medical science has achieved especially saving babies lives in utero.
And then, there is the lawful murder of babies in utero. Makes one wonder what kind of
civilization we have here. Evelyn
I applaud everyone who finally “GETS” it about what abortion really is–MURDER. Our country tends to strain at gnats while swallowing camels when it comes to the truth. Abortion is a selfish act that is being masked by the right to choose. Choose what? Life VS. death. That’s what. No one should have the “right” to “choose” to KILL someone else…and let’s face it–that baby is a not us! Hey! even suicide is a crime in our country! All children deserve to be protected and the hypocrisy of protecting the “wanted” babies but not the “unwanted” should be obvious to even the most brain-washed person alive. Shame on all doctors who see the truth but continue to go along with this horrible “legalized” crime.
It’s not that I don’t see the contradiction, if you want to call it that. You are failing to see that not everyone gets abortions. You blame everyone for something not everyone does. I have never had one, nor would I consider it. But just because we have the means to fix some things in utero, it doesnt mean that we can fix everything in utero. I’m a firm believer that there should be “baby drop points” for mothers who dont want their kids. It’s a helluva lot better than finding them in the dumpster. But don’t use a slight medical advancement as a way to judge others for their decisions, especially if you dont know the full story. Because I know some people who have been pregnant and had their babies diagnosed with anomalies incompatible with life, such as Trisomy 13. Is it so wrong to abort a child who is 99% of the time going to be miscarried or stillborn because of that anomaly? Sometimes you have to think that at those beginning stages of life, sometimes a caused death may be better than the inevitable death that awaits them. But them again, who am I? Like I said, I have never gotten an abortion, nor would I, but I also believe there are two sides to every story, even if we don’t like the other side.
What is it about you people that has you so brainwashed by your religious beliefs. The “inconvenience ” you speak of is most of the time not ready to be properly taken care of by its parents. The world is overpopulated and starving as it is, if every”mistake” was forced to be born, we would all pay the consequences. There are so many situations and scenarios that it disgusts me that any of you even think its ok to dictate what peoples choices should be in this situation. Its not murder without a birth certificate
Anthony, dude… most of the comments had nothing to do with God. Its called logical, rational thinking. Try it, instead of letting Planned Parenthood do your thinking for you. So, killing a baby is ok up until the time a birth certificate is provided? You are scary.
In way way, I agree with you anthony. It goes with my two sides to every story theory.
Jameela, the heartache of losing a child may be diminished by carrying the baby to term and holding him/her and saying goodbye while s/he dies a natural death. I have had MANY friends who were told their babies had some disease or genetic abnormality and chose to carry the babies to term and they were FINE. The testing itself is not always accurate.
Anthony, Anthony, we are already paying the consequences of choosing certain people to live and certain other people to die based on WHO their parents are. Violence and crime have increased 1,000 fold since the Roe v Wade mistake in 1973. There is a direct link to these 2 things and if you are intellectually honest you can find that out through thorough research. Are YOU starving? Are you suggesting that you DESERVE to have a world with less people in it so YOU can eat more, have more stuff, and live a full and prosperous life at the expense of someone else, who HAD to die so you could have a better opportunity? A child is NOT a mistake. ALL of our parents have made mistakes. Do you not think people can rise to the occasion when an expected event occurs in their lives, like: a car accident, a cancer, an unexpected pregnancy, losing a home to a hurricane and do well in spite of the unexpected? Is it ok to kill a toddler who is being naughty? How about an ornery teenager? So is a child who is born in country that does not issue birth certificates not a human? Why did the oriental countries always say a child was one year old on their birthday? (answer: because they counted the time in the womb as a year of LIFE) If you want to do with less, I know a great charity that give 100% of the donations to the Untouchables in India. I am eating less and doing with less to help them every month. What are you doing to feed the poor, cloth the naked, visit the prisoner, visit the sick and dying, or otherwise contributing to world? If you read the comments with an OPEN mind, I think you will see a reasonable and much needed debate. Sorry that you have such a closed mind but your life is still valuable, even though it is closed minded. Other lives are equally as valuable as yours.
Anthony, you’re a hippocrite and a liar. You have 15 children that are all bastards because you refused to have them aborted. You should be ashamed of yourself. I hate you
What in the heck?!? When did an article that is proving that surgies can be done to help children who have yet to be born survive to birth - get to be about abortion. The doctor’s article did not mention abortion - yet you can always find some people who have nothing better than to turn every single subject into a debate whether it warrants one or not.
If I found myself in this situation with my child dying inside of me - and the doctor could perform a surgery to save his/her life before they are born. I would do it in a heart beat. This would keep my child living and allow him or her to be born ALIVE!!!!! As a parent, I would feel less than human if i didn’t do everything to save my unborn child’s life as well as born child’s life.
Don’t get me wrong - I do not believe in abortion nor would i have one. But if surgery is all that could save my child’s life - i would do it - if it meant they had to be partially born to do so. I could not let them just die - for fear of people like the one’s commenting on this site.
I think that everything does have two sides and just because people made the choice to abort does not mean they are bad people. Sometimes the situation is so horrible they wouldn’t choose to raise a child in that. Sometimes it is done very early. I do agree that most abortions are for selfish reasons but sometimes, such as disease and horrible situations, I can truly synmpathize with those that choose to do so. Also, physicians have no choice but to rpovide these as told by their superiors and are just out there like us trying to make a living. Many usually regret it later in life which is why I would never choose to do so and I don’t agree with it but I can sympathize with SOME who decide to do so.
Rickybobby,
no matter if its legal or not. abortions will still happen. so all of you can complain all you want. id rather people do it safely with the care of a doctor than by themselves. There is a certain period in which they will carry out an abortion, i think 60 days or so. i would rather worry about the future of what could be a child, rather than think about now and risk it. If its not ready to happen, dont let it.
nancy jean,
not everyone can rise to the occasion no, i know its hard not to be positive. but its a fact people cannot always do what they need to do to support someone else. so , you make the right choice at the time in your life when you feel you cant give the best for your (could be) child. Good for you on cutting back and helping the poor of india. I totally support that. They werent aborted.
I love how any areticle that has to do with babies brings out all the religious anti-abortionists with their self-righteous judgemental opinions. There are two sides to ever story. It may not be the story YOU like to hear but unfortunatly that is how it is. No amount of preaching is going to change that. But back to the actual article. Medical Science is great. It’s nice to see that science is coming to a point where conditions that could cause into-uterine death can be corrected before the damage is beyond repairable. My heart goes out to those families that opted for these surgeries and wish them the best with their children.
The point I was trying to make in my statement was that there is such a double standard, ie: if the baby is wanted by the mother, then it is considered a “life”, a “human being”, and with all of modern medicine technology, doctors can do everything in their power to perform these life saving operations to save the life of the unborn child…on the flipside, when the baby in the womb isn’t wanted by the mother, then it isn’t considered a “life”, it is viewed as just “a blob of tissue” and it can just be violently disposed of in barbaric abortion methods.
Ok, so leave God out of the picture… modern scientific medicine itself has shown us that the baby in utero is an entity in and of itself with it’s own genetic make-up, own heartbeat, own brainwaves, own blood type (completely separate from the mother)-we have 3D ulrtasound machines that show the baby alive, sucking it’s thumb, heart beating away…..last time I was aware, the act of terminating a life is defined as “killing” or “murder”…..who then decides what babies we are going to save, and what babies we are going to kill/murder/abort/terminate?? And what say to they have in the matter?? To quote a friend…”would it bother us more if they used guns”?. Would it bother us more if the baby was out of the birth canal and then the abortion doctor sucked out the baby’s brains?? Would it bother us more if after the baby was born, the doctor took a scalpel and cut the baby up into little pieces??? Would it bother is more if after the baby was born, a caustic skin burning solution was poured all over the baby to burn it to death?? So why is it ok to do this to the baby in utero?? Why in some cases do we go through all of this trouble to save the life of the baby in utero, but in other cases, we go through so much trouble to terminate the life of the baby in utero??
There is no denying the scientific fact that the baby in utero is a life..a human life.
I personally believe that this is all crap about abortion! I am reading about the awesome advances in science. Where did the article say abotrion? I personally believe that it isn’t MY responsibilty to fund someone else’s child! I am angry at the thousands of “bastard” children that I have to pay for through taxes and social programs! HOW ABOUT THAT? No one says anything about the millions of kids that are currently being supported by the state welfare system! WHAT ABOUT THAT???? I am so tired of being taxed to death to support the baby’s mamas getting their “check”… I have a friend who works @ DHR Child Support. THESE are the people we should be angry with! We need to cut the funding for these baby’s mamas with 7 kids and getting her “check”. “Balling” off the government should not be an option! The people who get abortions are the ones who usually cannot afford to have children at that moment in time or have horrible circumstances! They see that the quality of life for their child is not what they want!!! It isn’t something that a woman goes into lightly!!! NOW these baby’s mamas who keep having kid after kids need to get in check! THEY are the ones who we need to control- not the ones who go in for an abortion!!!!!
BRAVO Annie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well put!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Truth is always absolute and should never be subjective. Yet we live in a society where truth has become what ever we want it to be. So we can both be amazed by medical miracles and passe’ about abortion. We are horrified by stories of women ripping the unborn from the wombs of unsuspecting women yet uneffected by the common use of abortion as a contraceptive. We place human life at such a low priorty that when a woman in England aborts her baby so as not to leave a carbon footprint we applaude her sense of ecological committment. Where does the madness stop.
We have created a world that does not value life - we have no one to blame but ourselves.
Dr. Manny’s article was about the mirlces of modern medicine and we should be grateful for that but it does come with a flip side. As much as we want to save the “baby” we so callously dispose of the “fectus” We are a world of symatecs. Truth is truth is truth. A fectus in a human woman is a baby and mordern technology has let us see into this womb with clarity to view that a fectus at 11 weeks has arms, feet, head, body and face of a person. Modern medicine has allowed to see the face of humanity before we end it.
It’s amazing how article like this bring about all the religious, self rightous people and their judgemental opinions. Everyone wants to think they are holier than thou, cause they gave birth to all 10 of the children that our taxes are paying for. There is going to come a time when ya’ll are going to get pregnant and realize that your not financially stable enough to accomadate your 15 kids and your going to be the one being a hypocrite getting an abortion. Just remember, ya’ll want to sit there and say the He is judging everyone. Then let He who is free of sin cast that first stone, and leave the comments to be made on our judgment day. Most of you probably dont have the right to be placing judgement on anyone. AND YES I am thankful for medical science, now those that can afford children without the help of the peoples taxes can make sure that their children are born healthy. But in some cases, maybe those crack addicts and welfare bums should be getting abortions. Save me some tax dollars cause dammit, i gotta pus gas in my car
Something in you can not have more rights to your body than you do. That is the entire arguement. We have tried banning it and it didn’t work. Septicimea became the number female health problem. If you don’t take into account the consequences of your high and mighty moral decisions then you are not moral at all. The bottom line is no force on earth can make a woman carry a fetus to term. So the choice is giving women medical care or not. It is the woman involved call solely. Right wing men who think they are ‘head’ of the house can never accept it is almost none of their business.
Point#1 for ANTHONY and MCM
Have you ever heard of the word *adoption*? Just because the birth parents can’t care for their “mistake” doesn’t mean the baby shouldn’t get a birth certificate. If abortion wasn’t so easy we wouldn’t have a baby market that we have to pay 10k, 20k, or more to adopt or go overseas. And no, I didn’t–I DID adopt 2 children out of our own state CYF system.
Point#2 for JAMEELA and JULIE
Yes there are 2 sides to every story, but **two wrongs NEVER make something right.** Back in the 60’s my father contracted scarlet fever and my mother also got a milder form called scarletina. My mother’s doctor was even back then legally allowed to advise my mother that she could get a “medical waiver” for a LEGAL abortion.(YES –in 1962!) I was considered a very “high risk” for abnormalities. Lucky for me my mom chose life. I was born full term and perfectly fine.
Granted, they didn’t know as much back then about the effects of the disease as they do now, but hey, isn’t that the point?
And saying that the doctor performing the abortions is “just trying to make a living” is like saying that a hired assasin or a drug dealer is “just trying to make a living”. GROW UP!!
Point#3 for EVERYBODY
Every medical student takes classes about ethics as part of their required training. An article about medical “miracles” that does NOT provoke ethical debate probably isn’t much of a miracle. Throughout history new medical procedures have always sparked ethical debates, such as heart transplants or cloning. If you can’t stand the obvious abortion debate fueled by this article, then it’s because you are still grappling with the issue emotionally and avoiding thinking about it rationally. You cannot ignore the emotions and you must not ignore logic. The logical part will show you the hypocracy and crime of abortion. The emotional part will give you the compassion to forgive and help those who need counseling before during and after their pregnancy with whatever “choice” they made.
I too was amazed by the article and the wonderul miracles that can be performed to save lives. What an amazing thing to be one of those doctors that have such gifts and talents. I have enjoyed the e-debate above also. As a pro-life person it encourages me that there is passion around this issue. It is truely a base moral issue - nothing is more important than life. What lengths would we go to save our own life or the life of someone we love? I sincerely hope that all of the people that have expressed their opinion above are motivated at election time as so much hangs in the balance with whom our next president is as they most likely will change the tone of the Supreme Court over the next 4-8 years. In case you don’t know, Obama is very pro-choice and even supports partial-birth abortion as he doesn’t support limits on abortion. And as for you MCM, if you hate all of those social programs so much I assume you won’t be supporting Obama as he wants to raise every tax he can and have the government be your big buddy! McCain may not be everything I want him to be, but he is the one thing I demand in any candidate I support - he’s pro-life.
Vote pro-life!
To Heal or to Kill?
I think the reason that this article prompts some people to bring up the reality of abortion is the tremendous inconsistency in our law and culture. On the one hand we move heaven and earth to prevent a deformity in an in-uterus human, and then we turn around and kill millions of in-uterus humans and discard their dead bodies in the trash.
Objectively, the child we spend tens of thousands of dollars to heal is the same as the one we kill in the process of birth. A zoologist could easily identify the genetic material of both as homo-sapiens. Both are alive. Abortion kills a live homo sapien, a person. Subjectively, one child is valued and the knife in its womb is meant to heal, another is dismembered with a knife that it meant to kill.
Isn’t it amazing how we can save life, in the pre-borns, in infancy, and into adulthood and the aged!
LIFE…….truly amazing and it is all right here in front of us.
New life is shown to us not only in the cradle of the nursery, but also it shows itself as we watch a pregnant woman walk towards us.
Life is continuously being saved in our hospitals today! Truly unfortunate, though, are the strange people that chose to take the life of a woman called Terri in a so-called hospice where they are supposed to respect life! My Dad’s life was taken by the comfort meds left in our home by the hospice…..whose comfort??? He had many more days ahead of him, but someone close to him didn’t see it that way……..
So, I say, just open your eyes to see all the miracles of life and saving of lives that are present in our world of today!!
So, I ask you all WHY are we searching for LIFE on other planets….LIFE is right here on OUR planet….and we have destroyed close to 50,000,000 pre-born lives in the past 35 years right here in the USA….
Just another thought on the subject of LIFE……..
How about—if you are on welfare, you must be on mandatory birth control. If you can’t support yourself, then you can’t afford baby!
“So, I ask you all WHY are we searching for LIFE on other planets….LIFE is right here on OUR planet….and we have destroyed close to 50,000,000 pre-born lives in the past 35 years right here in the USA”
because life elsewhere would be amazing and LIFE changing
I agree totally with MCM.
Scientifically, before 10 weeks, its an embryo, in the process of developing the characteristics required for survival as a life form. It is then a fetus until actual birth. Most doctors wont actually recognize that fetus as viable until after 24 weeks gestation. Generally the survivability of the fetus is extremely low before that time period. And with laws in place now, that fetus is not considered life until a birth certificate is printed out . But here is the really sad truth. Now that we have all this anti-abortion movements and everything else, alot of people don’t realize that it is an anchient practice. YES ALL RELIGIOUS FOLKS, this dates back to the times that preaches that it is wrong. The practice of abortion dates back to ancient times. Pregnancies were terminated through a number of methods, including the administration of abortifacient herbs, the use of sharpened implements, the application of abdominal pressure, and other techniques. Abortion laws and their enforcement have fluctuated through various eras. Many early laws and church doctrine focused on “quickening,” when the initial motion of the fetus can be felt by the pregnant woman, as a way to differentiate when an abortion became impermissible. In the 18th–19th centuries various doctors, clerics, and social reformers successfully pushed for an all-out ban on abortion. In the 20th century various women’s rights groups, doctors and social reformers successfully repealed abortion bans.
Nacy,
Just becuase something is an ancient practice doesn’t make it right. People have been killing each other since the beginning of time but that doesn’t make it right. Prostitution is one of the oldest “professions.” That doesn’t make it right. People have solen things from others for thousands of years, that doesn’t make it right.
Lets say for example you are trying to learn to play the piano. You have only been playing for 10 weeks. But, your piano teacher says you’re not a viable piano player because you can’t play any songs without the music. So she takes a hammer and breaks your hands. Now you can never be a piano player again. For you though, you were a piano player because you were just beginnig to learn to play the piano. You were just never given the chance to develop your skills. Just like that CHILD at 10 weeks that was never given the chance to develop completely. Although not completely developed that child is NOT just an embryo. You, just like your piano teacher, never gave that child a chance to develop.
Well, as a liberal, I more or less support abortion rights as a necessary evil. But, I clearly see this is a GOOD and SOUND argument against it! Of course this makes abortion absurd!!! Even the medicine that creates the “fertility cult” of having children into old age is a contadiction to abortion. It is truly amazing that one doctor creates partial birth for healing and another for killing. Yes, it is killing. Jameela is stupid.
And people don’t give that child a chance to develope for different reason. True, you should not use abortion as birth control. But There are two sides to every story. I gave the history so ya’ll can see that unfortunatly abortion will never stop. And in those two sided stories, maybe those mothers feel that early death is better than an inevitable one. I don’t know, and neither do you cause you are not them. Let he who is free of sin cast the first stone. And I am sure that you are not eligible to cast that stone, now are your Erin?
You know, dale, jameela isnt stupid. lst time i checked nobody called you stupid for your liberal jibberish. take into consideration that everyone here is entitled to have an opinion and therefor entitled not to be criticized or called names for those said opinions.
abortion saves lives
Ok so I have a question for all of you people who are pro-life..Say a women is raped and therefore becomes pregnant. She never had the intentions of getting pregnant and isn’t in a position in her life to support a child. Should she be forced to be pregnant, give birth and raise this child? Take into consideration she has no idea what diseases (physical and mental) this rapist may have passed on to the child as well as many other considerations.
So, would you support abortion rights if someone was raped?
julie,
either way, people should always be given choices. whether is right or wrong is up to the law. and in this case. an abortion within a certain period of time, is legal.
The ethical implications of ANY medical procedure can run a wide spectrum from understood and appreciated to shrouded in ignorance and despised.
I happen to know this family personally, and the reason Macie is alive goes far beyond discussions relevant to this medical forum, but suffice it to say that love and understanding of the MIRACLE of birth from the moment of conception until the baby breathes it’s first breath, are the main reason(s).
If one has no regard for human life, medical “removal of unwanted tissue” is such a benign procedure, that millions are carried out with no further thought to the ethical ramifications that can, and ofetn do, follow.
MUCH harder to take, harder to deal with, hard to decide, hard to pay for, hard to explain, etc., if going forward with a “problem” pregnancy. If at any time, one of the attending medical team had made the slightest error in the procedure, this news story would never have existed, medical science would not have been furthered by a HUGE step, and A LIVING, BREATHING, BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRL WOULD NOT EXIST.
I applaud everyone who was involved in the entire process, right down to the night shift janitor in the hospital who showed as much dedication to his job as the head surgeon.
When the day comes that a person’s eyes are opened to what they have previously misunderstood, they usually can’t understand how they were so blinded. If you were to see the in-utero MRI images of that precious child, less than a few inches long, whose tiny forming heart could not sustain her developing body and a massive tumor nearly her size (perhaps larger), you might begin to wonder how this miracle occurred. Quite simply, “medical miracles” are very often a lot more “miracle” than “medical”.
