The ethical implications of ANY medical procedure can run a wide spectrum from understood and appreciated to shrouded in ignorance and despised.

I happen to know this family personally, and the reason Macie is alive goes far beyond discussions relevant to this medical forum, but suffice it to say that love and understanding of the MIRACLE of birth from the moment of conception until the baby breathes it's first breath, are the main reason(s).

If one has no regard for human life, medical "removal of unwanted tissue" is such a benign procedure, that millions are carried out with no further thought to the ethical ramifications that can, and ofetn do, follow.

MUCH harder to take, harder to deal with, hard to decide, hard to pay for, hard to explain, etc., if going forward with a "problem" pregnancy. If at any time, one of the attending medical team had made the slightest error in the procedure, this news story would never have existed, medical science would not have been furthered by a HUGE step, and A LIVING, BREATHING, BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRL WOULD NOT EXIST.

I applaud everyone who was involved in the entire process, right down to the night shift janitor in the hospital who showed as much dedication to his job as the head surgeon.

When the day comes that a person's eyes are opened to what they have previously misunderstood, they usually can't understand how they were so blinded. If you were to see the in-utero MRI images of that precious child, less than a few inches long, whose tiny forming heart could not sustain her developing body and a massive tumor nearly her size (perhaps larger), you might begin to wonder how this miracle occurred. Quite simply, "medical miracles" are very often a lot more "miracle" than "medical".

julie,

either way, people should always be given choices. whether is right or wrong is up to the law. and in this case. an abortion within a certain period of time, is legal.

Ok so I have a question for all of you people who are pro-life..Say a women is raped and therefore becomes pregnant. She never had the intentions of getting pregnant and isn't in a position in her life to support a child. Should she be forced to be pregnant, give birth and raise this child? Take into consideration she has no idea what diseases (physical and mental) this rapist may have passed on to the child as well as many other considerations.

And people don't give that child a chance to develope for different reason. True, you should not use abortion as birth control. But There are two sides to every story. I gave the history so ya'll can see that unfortunatly abortion will never stop. And in those two sided stories, maybe those mothers feel that early death is better than an inevitable one. I don't know, and neither do you cause you are not them. Let he who is free of sin cast the first stone. And I am sure that you are not eligible to cast that stone, now are your Erin?

Well, as a liberal, I more or less support abortion rights as a necessary evil. But, I clearly see this is a GOOD and SOUND argument against it! Of course this makes abortion absurd!!! Even the medicine that creates the "fertility cult" of having children into old age is a contadiction to abortion. It is truly amazing that one doctor creates partial birth for healing and another for killing. Yes, it is killing. Jameela is stupid.

Nacy,
Just becuase something is an ancient practice doesn't make it right. People have been killing each other since the beginning of time but that doesn't make it right. Prostitution is one of the oldest "professions." That doesn't make it right. People have solen things from others for thousands of years, that doesn't make it right.

Lets say for example you are trying to learn to play the piano. You have only been playing for 10 weeks. But, your piano teacher says you're not a viable piano player because you can't play any songs without the music. So she takes a hammer and breaks your hands. Now you can never be a piano player again. For you though, you were a piano player because you were just beginnig to learn to play the piano. You were just never given the chance to develop your skills. Just like that CHILD at 10 weeks that was never given the chance to develop completely. Although not completely developed that child is NOT just an embryo. You, just like your piano teacher, never gave that child a chance to develop.

Scientifically, before 10 weeks, its an embryo, in the process of developing the characteristics required for survival as a life form. It is then a fetus until actual birth. Most doctors wont actually recognize that fetus as viable until after 24 weeks gestation. Generally the survivability of the fetus is extremely low before that time period. And with laws in place now, that fetus is not considered life until a birth certificate is printed out . But here is the really sad truth. Now that we have all this anti-abortion movements and everything else, alot of people don't realize that it is an anchient practice. YES ALL RELIGIOUS FOLKS, this dates back to the times that preaches that it is wrong. The practice of abortion dates back to ancient times. Pregnancies were terminated through a number of methods, including the administration of abortifacient herbs, the use of sharpened implements, the application of abdominal pressure, and other techniques. Abortion laws and their enforcement have fluctuated through various eras. Many early laws and church doctrine focused on "quickening," when the initial motion of the fetus can be felt by the pregnant woman, as a way to differentiate when an abortion became impermissible. In the 18th–19th centuries various doctors, clerics, and social reformers successfully pushed for an all-out ban on abortion. In the 20th century various women's rights groups, doctors and social reformers successfully repealed abortion bans.
