I think its okay for a child to have sweets accasionally. But as a parent you have got to be in charge and control your childs diet.

Being Swedish, I have ever since coming here as an au-pair in the 80s, been perplexed over what you are feeding your children in this country. Lunchboxes full of crisps + chocolates and of course chips with every other meal...Sweets on a daily basis. Horrific. My children had not even tasted a chip or any coca-cola at that age! Kids generally eat what you give them as long as you start early. A friend of mine tried out this Swedish cook book for children that were about to start on solids. Easy & quick recipes to help kids get the taste for flavours and textures of healthy foods. Her little girl has now turned 4 and can't get enough of fruit, veg, fish + things like wholemeal rye crisp bread!

It's a really good thing the rest of the Brits are going to be paying for this child's medical bills. Socialised medicine is such a wonderful invention for irresposible people who find it much easier to let others take care of them than to be responsible for themselves and the consequences of their own actions.

2 of my 3 children weighed 30 lbs. at 12-months-old. They ate well and consumed primarily healthy foods. Never did their pediatricians express any concern about obesity. Once my kids began walking and running, their weight seemed to level off, and they just grew taller. Today, one of them is 10 years old and weighs in at a whopping 57 lbs., and the other of them is almost 3 years old and weighs 34 lbs. Obesity definitely is not an issue with them, and I doubt that it is an issue with this 18-month-old. Sure good nutrition is a must. Perhaps a few simple sessions with a nutritionist will help this mother and her family. But in my opinion, obesity isn't even an issue here at this point.

Lisa, your what if scenarios are obsurd. the time that child is of age, I'm sure she woud have outgrown french fries. And chances are because this is fox news, it is greatly exxagerrated. As someone already posted, if she ate nothing but french fries, she would be ill. Hell my kids each french fries. Am I a bad mom? does letting my children have candy and sprite every now and again give someone grounds for a child abuse case? My kids are 2 1/2 and and 1 1/2. my 2 year old weighs 34 pounds, my 16 month old weighs 27. According to the pediatrician, they are perfectly healthy. The doc even said its okay to indulge every now and again. My mother is a heavy woman. It runs in her genes, But she is considered overweight. And she does nothing but eat health food. Are yougoing to blame poor upbringing or bad genes if she died of heart failure? You need to rethink your logic. Cause you sound like a tard

Ms. Boswell, my children (three) also favored foods I ate while I was pregnant with them.
I realize that with four other children to attend to it is easier to give your child what she wants, rather than put up with fussing. Please, for your baby's sake, withhold what she wants.....when she is hungry enough she will eat what is given her, i.e., healthy foods.
You are, after all, the parent responsible for teaching your children!

My Question is...so does the kid get in the car and drive to Mcdonalds, etc.? If the mother stops feeding the child the junk eventually she will eat something healthy. I don't have issue with the weight, as someone said earlier, she is not fat. I have issue with the childs diet. She is a growing child who needs all the nutrients she can get to grow up healthy.

I have two kids, and my youngest always made a horrible face and spit out her veggies the first few times she tried them. I just kept at it, with the attitude that if she gets hungry enough, she'll eat it. Nowadays, she's a part time vegetarian, won't eat anything but veggies, unless I force her. (Force being, "You will stay at the table until you eat your rice/meat/whatever." I just don't think that green beans or carrots by themself make for a balanced diet, lol.

My son is 9 months old and already weighs 23 lbs. He is in the 75th growth percentile and perfectly healthy. His doctor is very pleased with his growth. I have a hard time understanding why 30 lbs for a baby twice his age is excessive. She does not appear to be very large in the pictures. There are many children out there suffering from much worse cases of obesity. I agree that the child needs more nutritious meals but I don't think she is being over fed.
