Now I’ve had Doctors tell me its ok to drink a glass or two of wine a week just to help clean out the kidneys while pregnant.. but this lady could serve up to five years for this, for being an alcoholic, but a woman can have a partial birth abortion where as long as the head of the baby is still inside the mother the doc can kill it by suctioning the brain!! Being nine months pregnant and due at any time, I want to grab this woman by her hair and shake her until she comes to her senses! What is wrong with her?! One thing to say. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The child in question will have developmental problems through out his infancy, pre-school, and adolescent years. When this child is slow to repond, can not focus, or does not do well in school. Don’t punish him, he’s already been punished by the one that was suppose to take care of herself so he can thrive. Instead, she just gave him a tremendous burden to bear. If she drank through out her pregnancy, this child will develop a slight or severe retardation. This isn’t a joking matter. This child is already classified as one of the very many at risk youths.

This is sad. While my first reaction might be to scorn the mother for drinking while she was pregnant, I’ve mellowed a little. I hurt for the mother, and I hope she gets the help she obviously needs. I hurt for the baby, who was born in a condition she had no control over. I pray that God will watch over the baby and keep her healthy in spite of a rough start.

I would bet that the baby will be just fine. I know many mothers who drink while nursing babies and their babies are fine. In many countries, health officials say that drinking Guiness Stout when nursing is actually good for the baby. Here, the mother just happened to be drinking while giving birth and the baby got some of it. The alcohol will leave the baby’s system after a day or two and the baby will be just a heathy as if the mother never drank in her life. The really ironic thing is that I am sure that many finger pointers are pretty bad parents themselves. I see many mothers and fathers who lose their tempers and yell at and or man-handle little children for very, very minor things. I feel very sorry for these children. As a special ed teacher I have taught children with learning problems due to alcohol fetal syndrome. This poor child will probably never be able to read or learn because of her mother’s actions. Well, while the rest of you are getting ready to go to Poland, publicly hang this woman and maybe put a scarlet “A” on her for added kicks, and do God only knows what with the child, I remain rather ambivalent on this abortion stuff. During my third year core rotations, I had to do six weeks of OB/GYN at the University Hospital – two of those weeks at the “free” hospital (you and I pay for it, actually) and withnessed some of the most bizarre and disgusting human behavior (if you can call it human) so far in my medical career. We have welfare broodmares under the age of 50 who are GREAT GRANDMOTHERS. And not only that, they are PROUD of it. Not a father in site at any of the deliveries I attended there. The worst case I saw was a girl under the age of twenty delivering her FOURTH child – and the other “matriarchs” were rejoicing because, hold on to this, “Mah baby be eligible now! She be eligible!”. I found out that under state welfare regs, being unmarried with four children “qualifies” you for free housing “from de gubermint”. The very women that SHOULD take advantage of abortion are given every incentive NOT to seek one, while young girls who make a horrible mistake, are career driven, otherwise responsible and will likely not be a drain on taxpayers are the ones aborting their babies. The stupid, the shiftless, the lazy and the criminal elements of society are out-breeding the responsible ones. I am not really sure what the answer here is, but from my own observations it makes a strong case for eugenicists. Couldn’t there be a requirement for women on the dole to have Norplant implants for the duration of their systematic looting of the public treasury? if the mother had a binge drinking and gave birth, the child may no present the signs of fetal alcohol syndrome; however, if mother is an alcoholic, who drank over the entire gestation, the child should be examined carefully and the doctors should look for signs of FAS, like growth retardation, mental or neurological impairment and facial dismorphology (smooth philtrum, small opening of eyes, microcephaly, naris antevertum, etc)

Incredible. I recently saw a young woman, about 19 or 20, meandering down the sidewalk, smoking. What was so horrible was that she had to be 7-8 months pregnant. In this day and age, with all the medical information available, how can it be that women are still so ignorant? If you want to kill yourself, there is nothing anyone can do. But, to be pregnant, this most wonderful experience (if you ignore the nausea, weight gain, water retention and mood swings), and damage your baby is mind boggling to me. I think this issue crosses political lines, religious lines, all lines, and we as human beings need to affect change. I do wonder if women who abuse their babies during pregnancy are more likely to abuse them as infants, toddlers and children? Perhaps Fox News should have some therapists and pediatricians come onto their programs, and lay this all out on the table. What are the odds of serious and long term consequences to the child? Okay Dj, let’s just say she was scared. You as a parent to be have to make decisions that are beneificial to your baby. Drinking while pregnant is not a cool thing to do. I am certain she has been educated by her OB on the dangers of smoking & drinking while pregnant I was. In fact for the first 2 months of my pregnancy I smoked about pack a day, but I was unaware I was pregnant. I had none of the “normal” symptoms, no morning sickness, dizzyness, strange cravings etc. When I did find out, in the trash the Cigs went. Further in my pregnancy I developed Diabetes and my OB explained the dangers my baby faced if i didn’t keep my blood sugar controled. I was scared though my entire pregnancy that my baby may be born to large, with diabetes, & a heart murmur. Never did I pick up a Cigarette or a bottle of wine to “calm me down”. It wasn’t about me it was all about what was best for my baby. Hopefully this mother is not addicted to alcohol, if she is i agree she needs help, & jail time so that she knows the concequence of her actions. If she is maternal she will do what she needs to for her baby.

Fifteen times the legal-driving limit sounds awful, but the fact is she had the alcohol equivalent of three-and-a-fraction glasses of wine. Not admirable in pregnancy, for certain, but not grounds for criminal prosecution either. What sounds out of kilter is Poland’s .02% blood alcohol limit for driving. If a bottle is fifteen times the legal limit, then the legal limit is a fifteenth of a bottle – an ounce and a quarter OF WINE. That’s awfully strict. Picture a wine glass or beer can that’s only a fifth full.

My adopted daughter suffers (and I do mean suffers) from Fetal Alcohol Effect. Her birthmother apparently did not understand what drinking while pregnant could do to her baby. The least of my daughter’s problems is mild learning disabilities but now, as a 26 year old adult, she has a difficult time finding gainful employment, forming and maintaining relationships and understanding the world around her. It’s 9 months out of your life … please be considerate of the life you’re carrying and abstain!!! Your partying can have a lasting and devastating effect on that child. I just recently had my first child and I cannot imagine doing ANYTHING that would put him remotely in harms way…The whole time I was pregnant I did not drink or put anything in my body that would potentially harm my son. He’s 4 months old now and I STILL don’t do those things.

I find it improper for any mother to get drunk during pregnancy (moreso, at childbirth). But in this case, in the absence of a lot of information/data, i cannot render real judgment. Did she drink deliberately? Is she schooled? educated enough to know the consequences? Is this her first or nth child? if it is her 1st, and she did not have the proper preparation, pre-natal, etc. could she be so unknowlegeable? She could have been so ill-advised….. There are lots of things to know behind this article. An abrupt decision to separate mother from child by putting the mother behind bars may not really work. It might even do more harm than good Right now, we are all “stoning a sinner”. Why not investigate the circumstances surrounding :the case then act accordingly; see the family, etc……. then monitor both mother and child….. We talk of charity but charity embraces all …. the good and the bad …. in this case both baby and the mother. I am pro-life; I would “condemn” any act that would harm a baby, most especially, and this conviction does include adults as well. A very close monitoring is due the baby; she needs extra attention to see her development. This mother needs reform, over and above any punishment due as investigations may warrant.
