Going Green to Better Clean

Forget the Tupperware party. Today’s get-togethers are all about going green.

Green parties are the latest trend catching on across the country. The premise involves gathering at a friend’s home and learning how to make your green or environmentally friendly cleaners.

A group of women recently gathered in South Orange, N.J., for a green party, where participants used a green party kit supplied by the nonprofit organization, Women’s Voices for The Earth. (continue)

Sample recipes:

All-Purpose Cleaner

2 cups white distilled vinegar

2 cups water

20-30 (or more) drops of essential oil (as preferred)

Storage: 32-oz spray bottle

Tip: to reduce vinegar smell, try lavender or lemon essential oil.

Creamy Soft Scrub

2 cups baking soda

½ cup liquid castile soap

4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin (preservative)

5 or more drops of essential oil (optional – tea tree, rosemary or lavender)

Mix together and store in a sealed glass jar; shelf life 2 years

I think making your own cleaning products is a great idea. I also think the idea with buying them in the stores began in the 50s because women had already been doing this until the advent of marketing and grocery stores and with the change in societal needs and wants by making life easy for families. Now we’re heading back toward simpler times because of monetary and healthier behaviors which is always a good thing too. I wouldn’t mind riding a horse to work, but the work would be unbearable and including the stench from the poop.

I am on board with making my own cleaning products until the conventional cleaning products sold at the grocery story have ingredient lists. Check out your store bought product label and you’ll see no such thing as a full list of ingredients. How can you know what is in there? With homemade products, you know what’s there and whether you’ll want to expose your kids to it. No toxics in my house, thank you!
