This story brought tears and memories of my daughter who had the same rare genetic disease,Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Zap 70. She had a bone marrow transplant 5 years ago when she was also 9 months old. Her doner was my 3 year old son. She is turning 6 next week and completely healthy. She has no medical interventions and is down to 1 preventative antibiotic which we are hoping she will not have to take soon. She is a miracle just like the little boy in this story. This is a terrible disease and most parents have no idea that they are carriers until their babies are very sick and in some cases it is to late to cure them. This is a diorder that should be checked for routinely at birth. A bone marrow transplant is the cure and there is a high chance of survival if the disease is caught early. My daughter almost did not make it. But with lots of prayers and the wonderful staff of doctors at Valley Childrens Hospital,Madera,CA and Los ANgeles Children Hospital she made it and has a wonderful life to look forward to.
My son is a survivor of severe combined immune deficiency thanks to our Lord Jesus who created his older sister genetically identical and therefore had a perfect match for a bone marrow transplant. He is now 26 years old and very healthy. Going through the gut wrenching heartbreak of watching your precious baby boy be so sick and being so helpless is horrible. It would have been so much worse had it not been for the prayers of so many friends, family and so many others. God is gracious and I will be praying for this sweet little one and his family. It is so hard to imagine this could happen to you and not knowing what the future holds, but it does happen and I thank the wonderful doctors in Houston, TX and his doctor who was in the Dallas area when this happened.
I want to encourage this family to trust in God and hold on to every precious moment and know there is hope. With the medical technology available now, there is no limit to what this baby can do.
What a truly touching story. What a small person to touch so many lives. Thanks to little Granton, many others lives will be saved when the bond marrow doners share their life saving marrow with others like Granton. What a sweet family. Thank you for sharing your story!
