Sexpert Q&A: Climaxing During Childbirth

Dear Yvonne,
I heard it’s possible for a woman to have an orgasm while giving birth. Is this fact or fiction?
-Anna Maria

Dear Anna Maria,
Yes, females can indeed experience climax during natural childbirth, a reaction Dr. Danielle Harel coined an “unexpected birthgasm.” In researching this phenomenon, Harel learned some women have experienced a rather surprising orgasm at the moment of birth without sexual stimulation or fantasy. Understandably, given the circumstances, this response is not interpreted by these women as sexual. It has been speculated that one of the reasons for this reaction is due to the baby’s head putting pressure on the pelvic and hypogastric nerve system as it descends, inducing orgasm.

In learning about birthgasms, couples have actively sought to have a woman experience such a “passionate birth.” Research indicates that the primary factors that allow for such are that:

- The woman has a good sex life and understands everything that birthing entails.
- A woman and her partner incorporate massage, kissing and masturbation as part of the birthing experience.
- The woman is not given anesthesia during childbirth and uses sexual stimulation to ease contractions.
- The woman is in a safe, private environment for the birth.
- The woman’s partner is supportive, for example, he or she holds her.

I am surprised you have to do a study, There are some women that have a very sensitive “G-SPOT”
when the baby passes thru the birth cannel the pressure on the g spot gives her an orgasm.

Trust me when I say, some times it is only a light touch to the right area, (have to know where that is) that gives a woman that pleasure. So during child birth makes perfect sense. again why do a study?

In adding to your conversation on orgasm during childbirth, doula Debra Pascali-Bonaro has directed a film on that subject called “Orgasmic Birth.” After 26 years of being a doula, Ms. Pascali-Bonaro witnessed so many ecstatic births she decided to make the documentary film. It’s being feted worldwide now. More info on it can be found at http://www.orgasmicbirth.com.

Why does everything have to be about sexual pleasure? For crying out loud! giving birth is an amazing experience – why do people feel they have to pursue something sexual to inhance it?

Orgasmic Birth is a reality. The head does hit the g-spot on the way out. Not only that, the body, in a drug free birth, produces natural hormones that increase orgasmic ability. Women who give birth without drugs naturally have an ecstatic experience. This is the best natural drug-free high that exists on the planet. The idea of inducing an orgasm during contractions is interesting but not necessary. Best wishes, G

The thought of being sexually stimulated during childbirth is just odd. The last thing I wanted while laboring is for someone to touch me. This article is disgusting!

I’m sorry but having an orgasm during childbirth on purpose is disgusting. Your childs involved and that’s why it’s wierd. I’m absolutely a free thinker when it comes to sexuality but this is just too much. Birthgasms? Really Sexpert? Birthgasms? That’s messed up.

Really…I’m with Jim on this one. It’s just…disturbing I think is the word I would use. I mean sure I could understand that maybe the body or head of the baby stimulates a certain area and shazaam…but doing it on purpose is weird. I mean after watching my wife give birth the first thing I did after leaving the room was attempt to forget the images that had just been burned into my mind so that I could actaully look at the vagina as a sex organ again…not a chance I would want to “stimulate” her during the actual birthing process…you could your kid’s eye out lol.

Whats so weird about it? CREATING that child (hopefully) involve an orgasm. It definately involved sex. I currently use sexual stimulation to deal with pain. I have a chronic pain disease, and honestly, even when I dont feel sexual, my husband will get me aroused, because the endorphin response is better than Vicodin.

I guess the real question.. why is this idea so taboo?
