Dr. Manny’s Medical Breakthroughs for 2009

dr_manny_blog2Today I want to talk about some of the most promising medical breakthroughs that we could see in the New Year.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to be looking at different diseases — but for now, I want to concentrate on heart disease. Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S., and even though new drugs to reduce cholesterol and diagnostic tools, such as the Ultrafast CT scan to predict coronary artery disease, have made a tremendous difference in mortality — more work needs to be done.

So, here are three new exciting possibilities for 2009:

Percutaneous valve replacement
A valve replacement procedure is currently a major surgery where the chest is opened up to repair or replace diseased heart valves. But new technology could introduce the replacement of these valves through blood vessels, and without the need for major surgery. This would reduce the possibility of complications, side effects and recovery time after surgery.

Safer drugs
Coumadin is a blood thinner that millions of Americans take everyday — and it is especially popular among those who have had heart surgery. This medication is a strong anticoagulant, meaning it reduces the formation of blood clots, but it has many side effects. Newer drugs will improve efficacy and reduce side effects.
Semi-artificial hearts
Small, mechanical pumps that can be placed in the heart prevent it from failing may extend the lives of patients on the transplant waiting list, and in many cases, may even void the need for heart transplantation in the future.

In my next blog I’ll be talking about new breakthroughs in cancer treatment and Alzheimer’s disease. I know the present feels overwhelming, but the future, at least in medicine, looks very bright.

Dear Dr. Manny,
I believe the real culprit to heart disease is inflammation, poor diet, and less to family history (families tend to have the same poor eating habits). I have read many aternative health books and subscription newsletters with current studies. Inflammation will happen if you eat the “normal” america diet. The biggest travesty is the content of high frutose corn syrup in so many foods along with msg, and aspartame. I had a triple heart bypass in June of 2002 (which I was scared into and knowing what I know now, I would not have had it done) and have NOT taken any prescription drugs for high blood pressure or to lower cholesterol. I take nattokinese and did have a two week course of chelation (which lowered my blood pressure by 20 points on both ends). The drug companies have too much power and I believe have made modern day doctors into drug pushers. Canned, frozen, and packaged foods should be banned and only organic products allowed in the marketplace. Until that happens, too many Americans will die needlessly! Also “Eat Right 4 Your Type” was poo-pooed as junk science but I value the findings because when I follow the diet for blood type 0, I lose weight and feel great! New scientific studies should be done. Blood type 0 should not have wheat, corn, or potatoes which are all american staples. Maybe you can be an American hero if you were to sponsor a study. But you are up against hugh vested interests – AMA, drugs companies, and food producers. Diana J.

Any thing coming down the pipe in type 1 diabetes research? I have heard of some promising trials but it’s generally hard to get information on alot of them.

I have been told by a very reliable source that they are now testing a drug that will maintain the PT/INR (viscosity) of blood without the need to constantly readjust the dosage taken! As you know, if you take Coumadin you must constantly readjust the dosage to maintain a satisfactory viscosity. I am currently a volunteer in a research program that is much like Coumadin, but without all of the side affects. This new drug, when approved, will do away with the constant monitoring of your blood. It will make all other drugs, that require readjusting dosage levels, obsolete.

Dr. Manny,

I was watching your video on frostbite. Good advice but when you describe the symptoms of a heart attack you tell the people to ‘rush to the hospital’. You as a doctor should tell them to call 911. I am a paramedic and have seen many people rush themselves to the hospital after chest pain and die on the way. Please tell them to call 911 in all of your segments.

Dr. Manny,

Why haven’t you discussed Lymes disease? There are over 2 million people affected with this disease in the U.S. (The CDC admits their estimate of 300,000 is only about 10% of actual) We are suffering an excruitating battle of pain, fatigue, memory and cognitive disabilities and sometimes death. Please read “Cure Unknown” by the science writer for Discovery Magazine Patricia Weinburg. There is no treatment protocal and insurances are denying doctors orders routinely so we struggle to get any treatment and function at all. This disease suppresses the immune system so we are easy targets for any opportunistic infection that comes our way.
Please take a look and report on this disabling disease. Thank You
Michele Hamilton

Dr. Manny, if you or any other Doctor want REAL Proof of God’s Healing Power and People being raised from the Dead. I am the living proof and God always leaves a little something as a reminder of His Workings. (1.) I was born at Home and Born Blind. It was the never ending Prayer and Faith of my Mom, being the reason for my seeing today at age 63. I have the knots on both eye lids still today. (2.) I had a very large Tumor on my upper right arm. where I still have a large hole tyet today. My Mom pinned an anointed cloth from a brother ack Cole over the Tumor. The Country Hospital sent a Nurse out with a Sheriffs Officer and warrant to pick me up and take me to the Hospital where they were wanting to remove my arm below the shoulder. I was Healed right in-front of them both, I was 6 at that time. (3.) I had something wrong with my ears to where they would never stop running down my face or stop hurting. I was taken every morning to the County Hospital ER and was given a shot before I went on to School. I was Healed in an Oral Roberts Tent Meeting back in 1958 or 59. My Mother refused to let them give me a shot the next morning, they checked and found nothing wrong with my ears. (4.) I was put into a Hospital to die with a very large Tumor in my left Lung. I refused the Tumor after a few days when it really hit me, all the Tests and X-rays, etc. changed that fast and they could then find nothing, not even after going and taking 6 or 8 hours in tests the following day. it goes

Dr. Manny, I have also been both a Class A DOA for around 45 minutes and on my to the undertaker’s after being crushed, and I have been Clinically Dead, they gave-up and was talked into shocking me one more time, it worked. (2.) I had a bad heart attach once and waited for weeks to go to a Doctor. To make a long story short, I was in ICU in one Hospital for 5 1/2 days and all the Tests being done. They told us it was over because of all the damage that was done. So they sent me to Saint Thomas in Nashville, TN. where as soon as I got there, they went in and looked around and told us it was over, nothing could be done because of the damage. God gave me a New heart that same day right after their telling me such. That was in like 1988 I believe it was. I have had a number of heart attachs they called them since. Heart now hits a miss as it will. (3.) Then there is the Right Elbow which has gone TWICE, first time when I had 27,000 lbs. of pipe turned loose on me in an Oil Field, getting the Elbow. It was to leave my arm hooked at a 45Degree angel. I used weights and mened a lot of that 45 degrees. Just a few years back here, I broke that elbow again and they wanted to take my arm off just above the elbow. I said no, walked out of surgery and came Home drunk, and picked-up a Dumbell and started working it out. I had went for a year with it and the wrise broke, so what was a little more pian. 4 Times on my back has it been through surgery, I have a broken wire in it and blown dics

Hello Dr. Manny.

I looked for a blog to fit this in under Tanya’s nutrition section but her blogs are currently closed. Maybe you can pass this on to her.

I would hope that she, being an R.D., would forward a copy of the FDA’s warning letter to Coca-Cola onto the American Dietetic Association since they have decided it was such a good idea to “pal” up with Coca-Cola. I think that is a disgrace for the ADA. The FDA knows it is inappropriate to put “vitamins and minerals” into diet coke products. Why in the world didn’t the ADA stand up to Coca-Cola and tell them that? The ADA should know better.

The ADA is a gold star in Coca-Cola’s cap but, Coca-Cola is NOT a star in the ADA’s cap. If anything, the ADA will become the laughing stock now. That kind of partnering shows absolutely no credibility. Shame on you ADA!

I’m 45 years old. I had mild acid reflux that was driving me crazy. Prilosec worked, but I needed to take them daily.

I then took matters into my own hands and lost 20 lbs., slowly weaned myself off the pills and started drinking Aloe Vera juice each time I had acid reflux pain.

I still drink it once in a while, but for now my life is much better.

I think the biggest medical breakthrough for 2009 might be whole genome sequencing. There is a really touching story about a woman who had breast cancer and a whole genome sequencing company called “Knome” in this month’s issue of Boston Magazine called “The Burden of Knowing” at: http://www.bostonmagazine.com/articles/the_burden_of_knowing/page1 If I could afford it, I’d think I’d pay the $100,000 to get this type of information about myself….
