President Bush rightly withstood the powers of evil by taking a stand against stem-cell research if that research included aborted babies. I’m not sure how, exactly, you envision increased abortions as somehow being a boon to the stem cell research community. Human stem cells are derived from discarded embryos obtained through in vitro fertilization (IVF), which necessarily means that they are never transferred back into a woman’s uterus. I believe that it is entirely responsible to debate the ethics of the ultimate disposition of discarded human embryos, but I find it entirely irresponsible to attempt to link to pregnancy termination with stem cell research. Again, debate either issue on its own merit, but please do not cloud the issues with the patently false suggestion that allowing stem cell research will increase abortions.

How sad that you, who as an academic OB/Gyn clearly knows the above, have decided to deliberately mislead the lay public in order to advance what must be construed as some type of personal agenda – our teaching hospitals and the public deserve better.

The public funding of embryonic stem cells is nothing more than a moral justification for abortions. I do not believe that this will increase or decrease abortions. Abortions have been going on long before they were ever “legal” and will continue whether or not the legality of it is changed. If diseases can be cured with whatever is being “thrown away” then they should be allowed to do it. The abortion issue is another item that I personally don’t think men should be deciding. Women have the right to control their bodies, end of story. This should not even be a policital issue. I know that stem cells are able to be used in any part of the body because the eventually take on that particular cell. In our beginning stages (as a fetus) we are all just stem cells and then those cells divide and populate to become organs, feet, arms, etc. I can understand the worth that stem cells provide, and that science can use them for many things, alzheimer’s, and maybe even cancers, I’m just competely sure.

I can’t say I’m in agreement with using stem cells when those cells are from aborted fetuses if the fetus was aborted for the sole use of giving those stem cells away for a profit.

Perhaps some will see it as “well: if the fetus is going to be aborted anyway, we might as well use the remains.” Perhaps there is logic in that, somewhere; much like harvesting organs from a person that has just died to be donated to another person that needs those organs to live.

Why is everything that is done in this area perceived to be nagative. No one is going to rush into anything, as you said the uses have not always been successful. There are medical risks as well. To tie this in with abortions is ridiculous. By opening the field up, there will be more tissue to work with so no extreme acts to obtain it will be necessary.

I’m no religious fanatic, but I do have a strong faith in God. I simply believe there are areas that we are better off leaving “out of bounds”! To do otherwise quite possibly could start us on a slide down that proverbial slippery slope, and to be most honest I don’t like what I see at the bottom.

Society has on several diffrent occantions justyfied and even made laws that allow for the dehumanization of human beings and persons. This was done with blacks not having full % of human personhood (5/8ths?) back in the 1850s. This justifed slavery. In Nazi Germany, The Thrid Reich said that Jews did not enjoy full humanity and were claimed by the State to be “sub-human”. They too, were under the law of the state did not have the rights of personhood.

Look at what we have now, unborn babies do not have personhood either, to the tune that we have “legally” murdered nearly 50 Million in this country since 1073.

Why is it so hard to believe that a woman would sacrafice part of her body for science. I’m not the first one to say this but “if you can think it, you can do it”. Given that this country is headed down the wrong path economically (thanks to needless stimulus) and morally in the cases of abortion on demand and now lifting the ban on stem cell research, isn’t it entirely possible that the paths of these two issues may someday cross and result hungry researchers will offer economically depressed women a “way out” of their economic woes by selling these renewable body parts (embyllical, placenta, embryo and fetuses)? If I can think it, so can some government official or researcher. In fact I would go even farther to say that with the new direction our government is headed, the sale and distribution of stem cells (the near future) could look like a source of tax revenue. Questions:
(1) What’s to stop a woman from having many eggs taken, fertilized, then selling those embryos to scientists?
(2) What’s to stop a doctor from taking “extra” eggs from a woman without her knowing, and fertilizing those eggs and selling those embryos.
(3) What’s to stop a doctor from telling patients that “some” or “all” of their embryos did not make it, or are not viable, and selling those embryos (similar to #2)?
(4) What’s to stop a couple from deciding since they cannot afford IVF procedures, to have extra embryos created and selling those to cover the cost of IVF?
(5) What’s to stop a woman from choosing an abortion if it turns out that stem cells from an aborted child can also provide advances? I think that is the point of this specific article, and the possibility of increased abortions.

These are all some very possible cases, but not all of the possible cases. They don’t sound so bad in the name of science if you are able to cure a terrible disease. But consider the life that was created and destroyed to get to the cure? At what point does the end justify the means? What if you found out an organ doner was a match for an organ you required, would it be ok to kill that person if you could live? What if that person was not “important” or “significant” – and you were very important and significant? Does that make it ok?

Of course the items above would never happen, right? And companies don’t lie about profits and banks don’t go out of business…

I do not believe in abortion for myself. As a woman I can not and will not tell another woman, what is the right thing for her to do in a pregnancy situtation.
No one, knows what someone goes through in this situtation, or what circumstances she is dealing with. Let’s be quite clear on this matter, a child is a woman’s responsibility primarily.
Even if a father is in the picture, all women know, we are the primary caregivers.
My daughters best friend in high school, became pregnant at 16. She lived in an abusive home, with an alcoholic father who was physically abusive to her mother. She feared her father more than anything, and knew he would never except her situatiion. She could not tell her mother,she thought. She had an abortion. She is now 33 years old, and is still haunted by her decision, but knew at the time, there was nothing, or no one she thought to help her. She was afraid to seek help, because of all the years of abuse in her family. So you see, we can’t speak for all women.

People are not going to start getting pregnant on purpose to have the embryos harvested. A baby is so expensive that the argument that whatever monetary gain a pregnant woman could get from having their embroys donated is laughable. A little extra money is not going to make people get abortions.

Embryos are human, and even if they are the very least of humanity, deserve some protection.
It is ignorant of society to think that medicine for profit will protect innocent life and that all scientist are automatically “good.”

It may behove you to keep yourself informed about the bans Bush put on embryonic stem cell research one of these were that the cells were not to be sold for profit. Do not let the talking puppets such as Rush poorly educate you about stem cells. Stem cells in trials have already cured lukemia and in once case AIDS. I know they are a bit harder to obtain, but has anyone thought of trying to do research on miscarried babies? I know very little about the whole stem cell research thing, but why does it have to involve LIVE embryos? It seems sadistic to create embryo’s JUST for the purpose of experimenting and eventually killing them. I’m pro-life, but at the same time, I think if something this awful has to be done, then it is best if it is done as early as possible.

One more point: It seems we hear a great deal about the evils of stem cell research, but very little about the evils of invitro. Embryonic stem cells (ES cells) are stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of an early stage embryo known as a blastocyst. Human embryos reach the blastocyst stage 4–5 days post fertilization, at which time they consist of 50–150 cells.

There is no abortion involved. The mere fact that a Dr. would not know this and would even have something like this posted on a major news site is unbelievable!

Since when does abortion have anything to do with stem cell research? The cells are taken from embryos that are 5 days old. There can be no benefit to using aborted fetuses for stem cell research other than for ADULT stem cell research. By the time you figure out you are pregnant, it is way to late to harvest stem cells. There will be no black market for fetus parts made by mad scientists.

Besides, the scientists are more than for a series of checks and balances on stem cell research- check out the international society for stem cell research website, it outlines current ethical regulations for use of stem cells. Though you say its self imposed, at least they are making educated decisions and regulating themselves.

In this economy, I think it is very possible that women would sell their embryo’s. Women have done much worse with their children when times are good. It’s mentioned in a book somewhere about people’s hearts growing harder as time goes on, and losing natural love for their kids and parents.

The notion that this will lead to more abortions is an assertion without any domented proof. Correlation does not imply causation. Just because aborted foetus’s may be used in stem cell research does not mean that there is a direct link to decrease or increase in abortions.

I am a bit uncertain about the mode of obtaining the stem cells. Are the stem cells gathered from aborted babies or embryos created in a test tube associated with the Invetro-fertilization procedures? I seems unethical to me to grow embyos for science. Question – is there any way to conscientiously object to paying taxes as I am morally and religiously opposed to paying for abortions and Embryonic Stem Cell research.

Here’s a simple solution: if you are against this research, happen to get a disease that it eventually cures, refuse the cure! Tell your doctor you do not wish to be treated with a life-saving treatment because you do not agree with the way the cure came about. Apply this to your families as well.

My husband took retired in 08 with a buyout package. The government took over 60%. I got word from our tax accountant today the bad news is the feds want $5000 more. We are a middle income, single income family living in a small condo. If you have to have an abortion, Why did you get pregnant in the first place????????? There are many forms of contraception. What ever happened to abstinence??? For those who are confused:

Embryonic stem cells are created from 5 day old fetuses that must be fertilized IN the petri dish (in a lab), using the same procedures as In Vitro fertilization (think octomom..) If the family does not use all of the embryos, they are often thrown away, or alternatively be used for stem cell research. Most of the time, the families are able to decide to a. keep freezing the embryos (often at a fee) b. throw them away c. donate them to research. I would think the NIH will regulate the industry so that scientists can only use discarded embryos from IVF and not create embryos for the sole purpose of creating stem cells.

Any stem cells harvested after this 5 day date would be considered ADULT stem cells, like those found in your bone marrow, in a baby’s cord blood, your teeth, your hair follicles. They are not quite the same as embryonic cells as they cannot turn to every tissue in the body, but only a specific set of tissues. There are great strides in research using these cells- though they may not be the answer for everything just as embryonic stem cells will not cure every disease.

An aborted fetus has NOTHING to do with embryonic stem cells.

Besides, this research has already been going on, just using different money. I would think the ‘abortion’ trend would have already started if it was going to happen.

Thank goodness we finally have a president with some sense. Bush’s ban on stem cells was stupid and pointless. To everyone who comments on the “dozens” of other ways to get stem cells; Where did you come about this information. I am a PhD in biology and am only aware of one way to get complete totipotent cells. Seriously, please tell us stupid scientists.
I would also like you to consider the hypocrisy in your comments. If using stem cells is “abortion” then what would you consider the storage of unwanted, fertilized embroys at fertility clinics. These “babies” are destined to “sit on ice” for eternity. Atleast embryonic stem cells will provide the information, ability, and medium to potentially save millions of lives.

But then again….this is FOX.

I’m not sure of the point that you’re trying to make. HOW exactly would federal funding for stem-cell research increase the number of abortions. The only argument that you make above is “maybe,” which I have to point out isn’t really an argument. It seems to me that this headline is just bait for the typical foxnews.com viewer to weign in with anti-Obama hate mail. You have provided absolutely no reason that the proposed funding would lead to more abortions. Am I the only one who notices these things?

1) IVF In Vetro Fertilization: There is over 500,000 lines of stem cells being stored in clinics that will be ultimatley discarded ( basically thrown in the dumpster). These are the stem cells that will be used in research.
NO NEW LINES WILL BE CREATED for this purpose.

It is a hard arguement to make that it is morally wrong to use these cells to save human lives, but morally OK to just toss them in the trash.

Wow, seriously? Someone asked me if President Obama’s lift of the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research could lead to magical ponies taking over the universe. I was like what??? but then for no apparent reason I thought, nah man, maybe.

Reading these comments are making me nauseous. Before making impassioned arguments for/against an issue, do a little research. That will prevent you from looking like an ignorant bumbling idiot.

For everyone (like TOME) fearful that people will start getting impregnated and then having the baby aborted for blood money…just know that aborted babies CANNOT be used for stem cell research. Stem cells are taken from the embryo mere days after fertilization before any differentiation has taken place and weeks before people even know they’re pregnant. Every fertilization clinic across the country discards hundreds if not thousands of embryo’s a year (the ones that don’t get implanted back into mother for IVF, otherwise we’d have more octomoms!) and this would be a perfect source of stem cells.

For those making a moral argument, I’ll throw you a bone. Stop trying to link stem cell research to abortion. There is no link. If the chairman of OB/Gyn and Reproductive Health at a University Medical Center (Dr. Alvarez) cannot offer one piece of solid evidence in an obviously biased journalistically irresponsible piece, there probably isn’t one. A more compelling argument would be the fear that Physicians would start playing God and offering “babies on demand” to expectant couples. Selecting out genetic disorders and debilitating inherited diseases using genomics would be one thing, but what if they start selecting out gender, eye color, height, IQ, or personality? That’d be scary.

Dr. Manny, how does allowing federal tax money to fund embrionic stem cell research (when it is already happening) increase the odds of more abortions? You pandering to the FOX POV saddens me because I know you are too smart to come to a conclusion like that otherwise.

I hate this topic for this very reason. It gets people’s emotions riled up and no real debate ever gets done.

I am a “pro-life democrat”, but I am also a doctor. The truth is that embryonic stem cells come from embryos that were prepared for in vitro fertilization and are not going to be used. Stem cells are not taken, nor can they be taken from an aborted fetus. Therefore, stem cell research has nothing to do with abortion at all, and Dr. Alvarez should know this.

The real problem is that fertility doctors are making more embryos than they need, and then those embryos are either destroyed or must be frozen forever. If pro-life politicians really wanted to conquer the problem they would have to go about it that way, but I don’t see it as a very popular stance to tell infertile couples that they cannot have in vitro fertilization, so it’ll probably never get resolved.

I’m afraid I don’t see the link between embryonic research and abortion; the research doesn’t use embryos that have already been planted in the womb. I wasn’t able to ascertain from Dr. Manny’s post exactly how he thinks there could be a link here – please explain.

Dr. Alvarez, your logic that lifting the stem-cell ban may lead to increased abortions is simply unsupportable and ignorant. Stem-cells for research are not coming from aborted fetuses, but from fertilized embryos that are stored for potential use by the ‘parents’. That you would connect abortion with embryos meant for implantation is both disingenuous and speaks volumes about how you are only a commentator for Fox because you are willing to whip into frenzy those who place ideology over reality. (I guess that goes without saying though, since it seems to be a requirement of all Fox columnists).
If you don’t support using embryos for research then you obviously support discarding them like medical waste, is that correct? I have to say that reading the radical right wing nonsense on this site is quite entertaining. I cannot belive how unfair and biased yoru remarks on ESC’s are. You news people need to do your homework before reporting only one side ot the story. Also, if any of you did homework on this issue, there is one company out there that can harvest these cells without harming the embryo. Advanced Cell Technology has the only technology out there to do this. These are embryos, that will be discarded into an incinerator or a garbage can. Is that what these religious fanatics would prefer? I myself prefer to be sure that my granddaughters won’t suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis like I do. I know it’s too late for me, but it isn’t too late for my daughter and granddaughters to have a cure for this debilitating disease. Giving of the embryo’s is not a sacrifice, but instead, a gift to better life and to SAVE many of our childrens lives.

Excellent post, Dr. Manny. I particularly appreciate the fact that you have pointed out the lack of clinical application (to date) to match the “wow” factor in the lab, regarding stem cell research. When speaking to the average “Joe,” I get the impression that people believe lifting the ban on embryonic stem cell research will solve all major diseases, when so far, this can’t be supported by science.

I am personally 100% pro-life/anti-abortion, and would oppose embryonic stem cell research regardless of any medical implications. But, for those who don’t hold my view for religious or ethical reasons, it seems important to look at the situation w/realistic scientific expectations, and the sober knowledge that manipulating embryos comes with a societal cost & far-reaching implications, beyond dollars. Do they take already fertilized embryos and experiment with them…how old are these fertilized eggs? what is the limit on the age of these fertilized eggs…and will there now be a run to create embryos-human souls-to then destroy for science?

It scares me to think people are so ignorant to think women are going to run out and get abortions for the sake of stem cell research. What was approved was the ability for researchers to use tax payer’s money to fund embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem cell research is currently being done with discarded embryos from IVF- the question is whether to discard them or use them from research. This opens to door for embryos to be created purely for the purpose of research- i.e. creating life for the purpose of research (i.e. destruction). The ethical question is when does life begin and why is life created. I personally don’t want my hard earned money that I have to pay taxes on used for this purpose and my understanding is that greater than 50% of americans feel the same way. While aborted embryos aren’t being used for this purpose now, do we know they won’t be used in the future (especially now if there is a profit motive involved)? there are many other different types of stem cells being used in research today. The question is about public funding, there was never a restriction on private funding. Where are the animal models that prove this is a viable solution? Why do we have to use human embronic cells now?

What if stem cell research could allow your loved one to walk again if paralyzed or to cure cancer? I am a pro-life Catholic who is adamantly opposed to abortion. However, I have several friends who went through invitro fertilization and struggled with what would happen to the discarded embryos that were never used. If ultimately these frozen embryos would simply be destroyed, why not use the stem cells to change the lives of millions of Americans who are suffering each and every day with crippling diseases.

Lifting the ban on stem cell research will in no way promote more abortions!! As a medical professional who has worked many years in OB-GYN this will definitely not be the cause of any increase in abortions – if increase should occur. I truly hope any increases are approached with a multiple approach type medical system.

Abortion is an extremely emotional process for a woman if they choose to go down that road.

Personally I am against abortion- in that I myself would not undergo such a process.

I love watching religious people condemning and being hateful of others. Most of your thoughts are more like your “devil” than your “jesus”. 500 years from now people will laugh about religion, much like we do now about the greek and norse gods from before out time.

Ethics and Obama are two words that just don’t go together. Of course there will be an increase in abortions. And Obama is unlikely to be concerned about that, considering his enthusiastic support of late-term abortions, and his disregard of babies born alive but left to die because the procedure was intended to be an abortion – not a delivery.

I would like to see more statistics showing that increasing in federal funding for stem-cell research actually leads to more abortions. Otherwise, I think this is really speculative. The federal government has lost control of the pharmaceutical industry anyhow. Many drugs hit the market without approval. If stem cells have positive rewards for cures, I don’t see how one can refuse life for others and force one’s morality upon someone desparately needing a cure.

I was amazed how many pro life people joined the dissent about the old case (recently in the news again) where a potentially viable live birth from a failed abortion was then allowed to die. What’s the big deal? Would it have been so much better if the baby had been killed 5 minutes earlier as intended in an “abortion”? So what if it was born first and then killed? Does that 5 minutes somehow change everything? That was just one case. The millions of others that died 5 minutes sooner as planned is the bigger problem.

The audience was asked how many would have an abortion if they were faced with the same circumstances. Many of the audience said they would have an abortion. The speaker said that if they would have an abortion they would have killed Leonardo DeVinci.

Stem cells can be extracted from umbilical cord blood. That, to me, sounds like a way to “recycle” what is leftover from a pregnancy instead of “creating” embryos to destroy to make parts. It’s all very sad…just use the cord blood stem cells. It would also seem to cost much less than making and destroying embryos for the sole purpose of a stem cell.

So, my taxpayer money is going for research on embryonic stem-cells. These embryonic stem-cells came from aborted fetuses which if they would have developed to full-term had been a human infant. Let’s cut to the chase – my taxpayer money will be used to do RESEARCH and EXPERIMENTS on human beings and infants – maybe even human cloning.

As to increased abortions, of course, there is always the possibility of money being involved which will lead to abortions, just like some adults have tried to give up infants for adoption in exchange for money.

To all those people with values and faith, I want to encourage you and let you know that God-Jesus is in control.

I have suffered for years from several serious neurological diseases. I know what it’s like to suffer, to be disabled and be in pain. The Catholic Church teaches that from the moment of conception the embryo has a soul and he or she is a person. By harvesting stem cells from this tiny person and killing them an abortion ahs taken place. The whole entire process is nothing more than an oddly performed abortion, so yes it inherently increases the number of abortions.

It’s important to get all the facts before you make a decision. Did you know that aborted embryos are not the major source of embryonic stem cells? In fact the stem cells typically come from surplus embryos at fertility clinics, which no one seems to have a problem with. At a clinic several eggs are implanted in an effort to garantee at least one or two viable embryos. One or two are implanted to make sure that at least one takes and the rest are discarded and yet no one seems to look at that as offensive in the context that abortion is even though it is the same procedure – discarding fertilized embryos. The stems cells that are drawn from adult tissue are only pluripotent which means they can differentiate into many, but not all cell types. While embryonic stem cells are omnipotent and can differrentiate into any cell the human body is capable of making. Therefore Obama’s move to reevaluate the eficacy of stem cell research is justified. We already use fertility clinics so why not stem cell research. When you or your loved one is suffering from neurodegenerative disease or paralysis or one of the many other life altering illnesses that stem cells have the potential to treat or cure you may sing a different tune.

Picture this: You are sitting on your porch drinking lemonade and a scruffy, pregnant, black teenager comes up to your porch and tells you she needs money, a place for her and her baby to stay and health care and needs your help. I am guessing you’d tell her “no” (at the very least). You’d tell her no because that child is not responsibility, right? But, you’d find it in “your heart” to demand that she has that baby. So, what makes it your responsibility when it is in the womb? Too many of these pro-lifers want to force their values on others. They really want to push their values on poor minorities who don’t have the resources to care for another humuman. Obama understands that abortions are no ones business except the person having them because YOU wouldn’t help them if they came to your door. Many over-active imaginations here. Thinking that people will loose all moral fiber and human life will become meaningless if we let people make their own decisions about their own embroys.

P.S. If you don’t want to pay for abortions in other countries don’t buy their products. It will be hard for China to get our tax dollars if we don’t need their cheap products.

The possibility of increased abortions have to do with the money factor. Women will be able to sell their embryonic stem cells for scienific research. This research has been ongoing. But now with federal funding it can go further. What Obama reversed was the federal funding that was restricted. Bush did not place a ban on embryonic stell cell research, just limits. Yes, now with letting the scientific community make up their own rules, this means anything goes.

First off, all those who criticized Dr Alvarez for his answer didn’t understand the point. Before starting something, we should ask some questions. He merely was raising some possible concerns which should honestly be looked at. It seems that with Invitro fertilization no one really considered the issues of creating a bunch of extra embryos and what happens to them.

For all of you who think they will just use the already frozen embryos that were going to be destroyed anyway, think again.

That’s the argument they made in Calif when they put forward a proposition to fund embryonic stem cell research. It passed. There was no disclosure that it includes funding for cloning embryos for research! apparently they sometimes want some with certain characteristics so some think nothing of cloning an embryo for research, although most of the public probably would have voted against it if it were known that was included. Scientists like to figure things out and some don’t let moral concerns, or even disclosure to voters get in their way. To this day, I don’t think most in CA are even aware of cloning being included.

Some scientists have expressed concern about the expectations about embryonic stem cell providing cures for all sorts of things that may never pan out. While the actual successes of adult stem cell research, umbilical cord cells, etc that do not have the ethical and moral concerns are downplayed. They have already been used to treat some conditions with some success.

This is just an example of the fanatical RNC/CPAC and its religious base trying to inflict its immorality on the rest of us.

As far as the argument that they are just using unwanted frozen embryos, as I mentioned above, in CA they already used that argument to put through an initiative that includes funding for specially cloned embryos and most don’t even know it and would have voted no if there was disclosure of that. Not sure where all the news media and watchdog groups were on that.

Besides discarding unwanted frozen embryos, there is a movement to encourage adoption of those embryos. That is, encouraging women/couples with extra frozen embryos to donate them to be implanted in another woman to give a couple the chance of having a child.

There have already been a number of babies born to families who want them from those donated “extra” embryos. And there are probably a lot more families who would love to have one or more so that they could have children.

There seems to be a spectrum of views on this and since it is so new there really isn’t much regulation. So before things take off with no stopping, this should be carefully looked at, considering all possibilities of where this could go, both potential successes and also potential pitfalls. Just because people have horrible conditions for which they hope a cure will be found, careful consideration needs to be given to all aspects of it and rules set down.

And with increased funding, more researchers will be clamoring for the funds and wanting to push the envelope with their research. Questionable practices can and have happened.

Embryonic Stem Cell research in no way automatically leads to more abortions. The stem cells come from donor eggs that are kept for in vitro processes. This means that the eggs are not inside a womens body. The eggs are fertilized and four to five days after fertilization there are about 50 – 150 stem cells that the scientist can use. Since the stem cells have not yet changed into any cells we have in the human body, the egg is not yet human albeit, it is living. However, no human being is killed in this process. In fact, this is a far more human way to end a life developing process than a standard abortion.

Granted that Obama is more ignorant than intelligent in most cases, he hasn’t done anything bad by unblocking government funding of stem cell research and application. This vital research is necessary to cure many diseases and neurological disorders such as Parkinsons.

As a Catholic Conservative I always look at how our actions may disrupt reasonable moral values. Stem cell research doesn’t interfere with morals because no immoral act is committed. I’m not saying that someone won’t cross the line but because that’s possible is no reason for people that can be helped to suffer due to ignorance of facts. As a scientist myself I know and understand that non-scientist have fears and concerns especially due to false information intentionally designed to play off of their lack of knowledge. Please take the time to investigate for yourself how this research works.

I have no idea how to calculate the number of abortions that go-on unaccounted for. I absolutely believe there are way more than we as J.Q. Public know. Any of you actually know anything about stem cell research? The stem cells DON’T come from aborted fetusus, they come from donated egg and sperm that are put together in a petri dish and allowed to grow for a few days. Stem cells don’t come from aborted fetuses…an aborted fetus is dead. so are all it’s cells.

My husband and brother in law are some of the dreaded scientists who actually research these things.

Everyone wants to see disease cured, and many people seem to think that ‘miracle pills’ will somehow be found to stop people from dying horrible deaths from various diseases. Unfortunately that isn’t going to happen. If a disease isn’t caused by a pathogen, then it’s probably genetic, and with a genetic disease you basically need to completly replace those faulty genes. That is possible with stem cells.

Look into the research that has been done with stem cells in Brazil. They have actually cured individuals with diabetes, MS and Lupus.

Why not give sick people in this country a chance? If a cure can be given with a stem cell treatment, give the choice between a stem cell treatment and an older therapy if the patient finds moral fault with stem cell treatment.

Hey Geoff, you aren’t killing legitimate taxpayers by aborting an unwanted embryo. Chances are the child would have grown up in an environment that produces useless adults that don’t work and won’t pay taxes and are probably a burden on society instead of a benefit. And it is crazy to expect an increase in the rates of abortion because of a federally lifted ban on abortions. Only religious nut jobs will think that because they think it’s the wrath of God upon a troubled nation.

Embryonic stem cells are different from cord blood Stem cells. Nobody is complaining about cord blood stem cells and no federal funding was ever denied to the study of their use. The complaint is solely with embryonic stem cells which are solely created by destroying an early stage embryo to harvest its component cells.

You have the definition of abortion wrong:

“An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by the removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus”

The embryo in question of this thread was NEVER implanted into the uterus for stem cell research. It was extracted before it was ever implanted or fertilized. So no it’s not abortion related.

For those opposed to the process, in the future simply tell your doctor that you decline any medical advance obtained through stem cell research funded by the public.

For example, just tell the physician, “I cannot in good conscience allow my child to receive a vaccination that will eliminate his cerebral palsy. Thank you, anyway.”

I don’t personally agree with it but it isn’t my call. Stem cell research is absolutely necessary and the possible benefits are amazing. We’re talking cures for hundreds of diseases. For those of you who are waiting for God to save you, have you ever thought that maybe He gave us the intelligence and scientific abilities for a reason? He is saving us. The fact is, that people have miscarriages and people get abortions every day. Why have it all be for nothing? Why not take those tragedies and use them to find cures. Having had a miscarriage myself, I wish that I could have donated that for research at the time. At least it would have been useful instead of going in the garbage.

Sperm is injected into the egg.. much like IVF (in-vitro fertilization) and if the egg and sperm combine and the cell starts dividing… then the cells inside the outer covering are called ’stem cells.’ Please do your research before posting a absolutely naive comment. And this process is not ‘unchecked,’ in fact for anyone to get government money it takes months of planning and research and proposals just to get money for research. Having an abortion is a personal choice and I do not see how lifting the ban on government funding for research involving stem cells will lead to more abortions… that comment is absolutely absurd! It seems to me that he is saying that federal funding for stem cell research from aborted babies will actually encourage scientists to potentially pay mothers looking for an abortion in order to gain the stem cells. Considering that they now have more money at their disposal, why not put human life at disposal as well? Obviously President Obama, who said he never wanted is daughters to be PUNISHED with a CHILD, does not understand the ultimate blessing and miracle of every human life, no matter the circumstances of its conception.
