It's useful to note that sometimes people aren't allergic to the animals themselves, rather the pollens/molds/etc. that are on the animals skin and fur. I thought for years that I was allergic to cats but it turns out I am not. I did a little research and found out there are certain molds that cats and dogs tend to carry on their bodies, plus all of the pollens and dust they pick up when they are outside. I would receommend an allergy test before someone rules out having a pet because they think they are allergic. The physical and emotional benefits of having an animal companion are measurable and documented!

HEPA vacs are a great solution for people trying to keep allergens to a minimum. Though, HEPA vacuums vary widely on their ability to seal properly and get good airflow. Another suggestion, while more practical when building a home, is a central vac that actually removes the dust and allergens from the home. Just make sure the exhaust exits to the outside or garage.
