H1N1 Q&A: Dr. Manny Responds to Viewer E-mails

dr_manny_blog2I’ve been getting many e-mails over the past couple of days concerning swine flu.  So I’ve decided to answer a few of them here.

q1Dear Dr. Manny,
If I had the swine flu in 1976 after I received the swine flu vaccine as a college student, do I have any anti-bodies that may help ward off this version of the virus?
                  —Amy Gorman
                  Lutherville, MD

a1Probably not. This current swine flu’s genetic makeup is different from the swine flu from the ‘70s, and therefore the vaccination won’t be protective for you. But the silver lining is that this current swine flu is less lethal, and there may components in it that more Americans have been exposed to. So you may have a greater chance of being protected already which can minimize the symptoms.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

q1Dear Dr. Manny,
We have friends who have returned from a trip to Mexico City two weeks ago. How long would it take for swine flu symptoms to show up if they were infected?
Thank you for your time,
—Alan

a1The typical incubation time for a virus is 48-72 hours.  So if your friends have been back for two weeks, and don’t have any symptoms, you can feel confident that they are safe.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

q1Dr. Manny,
My wife and I are very concerned of the complications swine flu/treatment would pose to her pregnancy. Are the approved drugs for treatment approved for use during pregnancy?
Thanks,
Ben Demaline
Jacksonville, FL

a1Yes, all of the current flu treatments can be given to pregnant women. As a matter of fact, we tend to be more aggressive in treating the flu in expectant mothers because pregnancy can make flu symptoms worse and put the patient at higher risk. That’s why it’s recommended that all pregnant women get flu shots annually.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

q1Dr. Manny,
I will be flying to Las Vegas next week with a two-hour layover in Atlanta. I had a liver transplant five years ago and have done really well. Do you think that I should wear a mask at the airport and on the plane? I am very concerned about the large crowds and would like your opinion.
Thank you for any answer!
G. Savage

a1As a liver transplant recipient you are probably taking immunosuppressant therapy drugs and therefore you do have to take precautions to avoid exposure to the swine flu ― or any kind of flu. Even though I’m not a big advocate of wearing masks, I do feel that you should wear one. But remember: Not all facial masks are created equal, so get one that has been proven to protect against viruses. There are many supply stores that carry this specific mask for viruses. Also, try to wipe down all the surfaces on your airplane seat with antibacterial wipes. Be sure to wash your hands before, during and after the trip. And avoid any contact with anyone who you suspect might be sick. I know that this is a big stretch, but until we know exactly the extent of the spread, in your particular case, I would be extra cautious. I hope that this doesn’t ruin your vacation!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

q1Dr. Manny,
I have no choice but to commute using public transportation everyday.  How should I take precautions against the swine flu?
                  Thanks,
                  —Paul

a1If you can avoid public transportation, especially crowded subway cars, then do it.  But if you can’t here’s what you can do:

  • If you are a healthy individual you can just use antibacterial products, including wipes and gels, chronically throughout your trip.
  • Avoid contact with people who are coughing or appear sick.  If they are in your car, move to another one.
  • As soon as you get home or to the office wash your hands, wipe down your cell phone, iPod or any device that you used during your trip.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

q1Dear Dr. Manny,
I’m a chronic nail biter and I’m really concerned about the swine flu.  What should I do?
Best,
                  —Mel

a1First and foremost — wash your hands. Your hands are the most common tool for picking up germs and viruses in general. So if you are a nail biter, this would be the perfect incentive for you to quit. Also, biting your nails can make you ingest things other than viruses that you don’t want to have in your body.

I have not gotten the flu in over 4 years. i do get my annual flu shot but iI practice more practical steps that no one is mentioning. I do not use public pens or magazines. And I always wear a long sleave shirt or sweater when I am in public. I am not a germaphobe just practical. I have not even had a cold in 4 years. I think these need to be shared suggestions. Also using the your finger instead of the pens provided when using a debit card if possible.

Just to let you know how things are going here in the trenches in Texas….I have been sick with a flu that I came down with 2 days after a public Goat Cookoff in Central Texas(several thousand people from all over Texas came). I have all the symptoms and I called my DR and was basically ignored… no tamiflu, no test…even though I am immune deficient because I take Enbrel. I personally know 6 different people with the same symptoms who also have not been tested or treated. I think this virus is really out there much more than anyone knows because of lack of testing. I think this virus is much more mild here and therefore is being not taken seriously and is being spread everywhere as a result. I can only hope I do not pass it on to someone else. I think all you efforts are just too late. THis epidemic was predicted a year ago by virus monitoring labs and we did nothing to stop it. The story is in the journals. Why are we acting so surprised?

Comment by Ann Koral

I know the flu shot will not protect me from swine flu and I also had pneumonia vaccine because of asthma. If I feel any signs of flu symptoms, with my history, should I be more concerned?

Dr., do we currently have a cure for the Swine Flu in the US? Are there medicines that work to get rid of it completely?

Could any one comment of travel to Cozumel? We have a vacation planned and not sure if it would be advisable or not. I haven’t heard of any sickness there as of yet.

My husband and I are flying to San Francisco on Sunday, May 3rd, should we cancel our trip? I am concerned about being confined on the airplane and if we do get sick we won’t be able to get home to Florida.

I am planning a trip on a cruise in August to the Carribean. My friends think we should post pone bookign any travel plans at this time. What are you thoughts. from my understanding dring the warmer months July/August we geneally do not see Flu. My other concern is that the media is making a bigger hype about this than necessary.

Dr. Manny,
I am a parent of a senior that is on his way to go to Cancun, Mexico for his senior trip.
There is about 20 kids going and parents. I’m very scared of letting my son go there. How high does the alert have to be before thee is a no travel alert to all of Mexico? How bad does it have to get before you close the borders to stop this from coming into our country any more then it already has. From one and many scared parents in this country.

Thank you,
Kathleen from Edmond, Ok.

FOX News has stated they were going to tell the most visible/noticible warning signs of Swine Flu. Since they haven’t, what are they?

Comment by Jean S.

Dr. Manny,
Do you think our President should close the border with Mexico because of the Swine Flu. The baby who died here in Texas came from Mexico and we can see the Swine Flu is spreading so fast. It came from Mexico, us Americans are suffering as a result.
Thank You, Jean

Comment by Rich

I am just getting over what I perceive as the “regualr” flu – although it was a bit different from previous flus I have suffered.
Will I be more, or less susceptible to this “swine” flu?

Comment by Samantha Rieser

So if this swine flu is so bad, why have we not been told to stop eating pork?

Comment by Dani

Dear Dr.Manny,
I am very concerned about my younger sibling (she’s 5 years old). She has a runny nose, cough, and a fever. My Mom doesn’t want to take her to see a doctor. Could she possibly have the H1N1 virus? Could I possibly have the H1N1 virus? Should we take her to see a doctor soon?
Concerned,
-Dani

Hi Dr. Manny,

I know you responded to an email about someone flying that has had a liver transplant, but how concerned should a healthy individual be about flying within the U.S. ? Would you recommend a facial mask?

My question is how did the swine, and bird flu, get mixed together to make a pandemic. Is this another population control form the gov. Why did this just come up out of the blue? If the cdc was aware of this who was under control and out break, was it released over homes at night. I feel something more is to come. Dorothy Hill 2012 Geralo Lane Lynn Haven Fl 32444 1-850-265-8860

we have seen population contol before in the United States in the 1930s, over Sna Fris. What I dont understand id who mixed this pandemic swine, and bird… Did the CDC form control of this virus

Hi Dr. Manny,

Traveling to Mexico Thursday. There are 8 of us who all have Tamiflu to take during our visit. Please tell me about coming home. Are our children at risk even if we feel fine? Are we doing the right thing taking the Tamiflu? We are still waiting to here back from the resort and hoping for our money back.

Thank you,
Patty

Hello,

Perhaps I should ask this of the CDC, but if there is a family on the west coast, whose children are still recovering from Swine flu after a trip to Mexico about a week ago, but the parents are not affected (yet), should they avoid getting into an airplane to fly cross country? Couldn’t the parents be harboring the swine flu still, and potentially infect the other passengers on board, who are all bound for the east coast? But I’ve not heard of any restrictions on such a situation, although it’s just commons sense and consideration to stay off of an airplane if you might be harboring Swine Flu — (they have an important family even they have to attend…)

Concerned,
Mackenzie

Comment by Shannon

Too late to close the borders…virus is already here. That being said, is there concern over the number of migrant workers who will be making their way here from Mexico for planting and harvesting?
Pork is safe; that’s not how the disease is trasmitted. Of course, those that raise pigs must be worried about the price dropping due to lack of demand. Maybe a chance to stock up on cheap bacon coming?
Of greater concern to me is whether or not this flu will follow the pattern of the 1918 pandemic. Mild break out in April & May but that fall/winter, the normal flu season, it decimated communities.
Such luck that my daughter will start school the same year we have a new flu strain emerge!

Comment by Stu

I don’t believe in God. Should I start now for protection? Seriously, it’s the flu folks…get over it.

Comment by Dana Kryka

If you catch this new H1N1 flu virus, once you recover, can you catch it again, or does your body create its own immunity to it?

Comment by Margie Gorman

It looks like there is more hype to the swine flu than fact. It is starting to look to me like more scare tactics to get everyones mind off of the ecomony.
I will be on the side of caution but this whole situation is looking a little bogus to me.

Comment by Margie

Most people won’t go to the doctor unless their symptoms are severe, so the number of flu cases is likely to be underestimated.

I live in NM and just returned from a weekend trip to Colorado, where I picked up some sort of flu. The symptoms were nasty, but not bad enough that I would usually go to the doctor. I still have symptoms, so I’m staying home. I’m already on the mend, and I doubt my doctor would even want me to come in to be tested. Plus going to the doctor might expose me to something nastier than what I have.

Comment by juditha

Is it possible to have this Swine Flu without a fever—————-could it be that a mild case does not run a fever????

Comment by did

I am concerned about the N1H1 flu being termed “swine flu”. While the DNA of this virus possess similarities to so-called swine flu of the past, no pigs in the U.S. or anywhere else have been reported to have the current virus. Swine flu? Humans and cows have 80% of their DNA in common. Does that make humans cows? The current of reference to Swine flu is wrecking a U.S. pork industry for which there is no evidence that swine are responsible. Even in Mexico where Smithfield Pork has been the unindicted suspect, the operations are largely biosecure. Haven’t been to Smithfield but I have been to other farms of similar size in Mexico, and anyone entering these farms must shower and change clothes upon entry and reverse the process on departure. No bacteria or virus enters or leaves the farm. The workers on Mexican farms live around the area in squalor and filth unrelated to the farm. Its no surprise that they get sick and the odor in these human quarters is unrelated to the near-by swine facilities. The workers are safer from flu inside the confines of these Mexican facilities than they are outside as the human quarters associated with the farm are completely sanitized and maintained better than some hospitals. Why not call it “Mexican flu”, since that’s apparently where it started!

My son has a mild case of asthma. When allergy season starts, he has to take nasonex daily to prevent his allergies from turning into pneumonia. Will he be more compromised due to the asthma and have a bigger chance of develolping the swine flu?

Comment by Debi

Dr. Manny,

My husband and I are traveling cross country next week to Phoenix, AZ where there is a confirmed case of Swine Flu. What percautions should be take to keep from contracting the illness. It is bad enough flying in plane with someone with a cold on board ….everything just flies in the air and I will no doubt catch it… I can’t tell you how many times it happens to me. I would cancel the trip if we could but it is work related. Does AIRBORNE work?

Thank you for taking you time out of your busy schedule to address our concerns.

Debi – Connecticut

Comment by Anita

What are the specific symptoms? Is a high fever immediate? How are we to know right away whether we are suffering allergies or coming down with this flu?

Comment by Sue

Masks, unless they are airtight, will not prevent the virus from entering the wearer’s mouth/nose … they will only keep your own germs from exiting (which is why surgeons wear them while performing surgery). People are being fed a myth along with a false sense of security by the media.

Comment by Patty

Why is Fox News still referring to this virus as “Swine Flu” when Janet Napolitano and others have very clearly stated that it is actually “H1N1″ and that it is NOT accurate to call it Swine Flu?

i live in texas, and I am to attend my brother’s wedding in San Antonio in june, however up to 300 guests of the brides family will be attending from various areas of Mexico….Monterey particularly….this is to be a large wedding and I am a little bit worried….up to 80% of the guest will be traveling from Mexico to attend………..

Comment by Ruth Ujano

The little 2 year old that died in Texas was Mexican and from Mexico. His parents brought him to Texas to be treated. Why were they let across the border with a sick child? I believe this is a mistake. I thought that they were screening people that looked sick at the border and having athem checked out.
Thanks

Dr Manny ~~ I have a son who is about to graduate from law school out in California — where swine flu has been confirmed. My questions is this……two years ago he was diagnosed and barely survived ARDS. He has had subsequent flu and pneumonia shots. Is there anything further that can be done to protect him outside of the obvious precautions that everybody else is taking?
Thank you :-)

I think it’s the illegal immigrants that are spreading this flu. is it any wonder that mostly mexican people seem to be involved? patient zero is found in mexico and the idiot illegals that brought their 22 month old across the border to die in a texas hospital.

Please do us a favor and tell us precisely what has killed the current flu victims. All the news sites reporting on this so far (as well as sites that should know better, like the CDC) generally omit that detail (or if they haven’t, they have buried the information too deep to easily find). At least one flu death is reportedly due to pneumonia. Are the other causes of death from this flu also complications or opportunistic infections, or does the flu have some side-effect like tissue destruction, accumulation of toxic by-products, or hypercytokinemia?

… And yes, I know that the CDC party line is that there is insufficient evidence for hypercytokinemia at this time.

I have a 9 year old daughter who has a chronic low IgG Level and is immuno suppressed due to treatments with steroids for an autoimmune disease. She has had a cough with phlegm for approximately 2 weeks now so is being treated with nebulizer breathing treatments. She has no fever or other symptoms. What precautions should I be taking, she is OCD and Germaphobic so she already uses hand sanitizers and washes her hands fanaticly. We live in Gulfport, Mississippi and to my knowledge there has not been any reported cases (of the Swine Flu) here. Should I be concerned and/or be approaching this differently? Thanks for your time.

My wife, 39, has stage 1 breast cancer and had a double mastectomy last month. We find out next week if whe will need chemo. My wife is a school teacher and wants to go back and teach before the end of the school year. However she is a severe asthmatic and is prone to pneumonia and I’m afraid if she catches anything, let alone the “Swine Flu”, she could be in trouble if she does ideed need to do chemo. We’re not sure what to do but if this pandemic does get out of hand one of our contigencies is to lock her away in the bedroom until the pandemic passes or she’s off her chemo.

Dr. Manny,
We homeschool, therefore don’t have the public school issues, but my 16yr old grandd is invalued with a very active club that meets every Sunday at a public park. The kids are mostly public schooled and a lot of young adults attend also, about 50 to 60 people attend weekly.
My question, should we take a break from the club for a couple of weeks until there is further infomation about this Flu problem? Or just be very vigilant about personal hygiene and attend anyway. The kids have a lot of physical contact, this is a live action roll play, mid-evil, sword fighting(not real swords) and learning self defense.
Sierra is very healthy now, but has allergies and the usual health issues of a 16 yr old girl.
THanks so much for taking your time to answer our questions.

No one is going to pay attention to a real epidemic after this over-publicized debacle. If every year 35,000 people in the US die of flu – how is this situation warranting so much attention?

The Secretary of Health today announced that 36,000 cases(or deaths) from the Non-H1M1 flu was common to the US. With only 1 death(Mexican Infant), we must be missing the BIG STORY? So… how many cases and deaths from Non- Swine flu is the CDC reporting in 2009 so far?

Comment by james smith

You do realize 36,000 people die each year from the flu. now with 1 death obama is going to ask for 1.5 billion and the enws is going to create a scare? stop being sheep and look through the swine

Comment by Brett

The CDC reports that every year 5% to 20% of the American population gets the flu. Every year, approximately 200,000 Americans are hospitalized with flu-related complications. On average, 36,000 Americans die from the flu…every year! What’s the real back story with this swine flu thing? Is this a media hype job? Is it possible that the American government has some sort of alternative agenda against Mexico? Maybe the government didn’t like Preside Calderon telling us that the drug problem stems from Americans doing all those drugs and that the guns being used in the border killings are moving into Mexico from the US!

Swine Flu — or the first symptom of Lyme Disease? With the emergence of possible Swine Flu cases coinciding with the start of peak season for lyme disease, which one of the first symptoms being “flu-like” illness – I wonder how many people will be tested for swine flu – test negative and be relieved – but then not realize that it could possibly be lyme disease?

Lyme disease symptoms in its early stage include fever, chills, headaches, stiff neck, fatigue and muscle aches.

Swine Flu symptoms include fever, chills, headaches, stiff neck, fatigue and muscle aches.

*The lyme bullseye rash occurs in less than 50% of patients – possibly even lower, and most do not recall a tick bite.

As a parent of four young children I can not help myself for being very concerned about this Swine Fllu. that is going around. I know that years ago, people from the United States had died from this Swine Fllu.
With that thought in mind I have found myself considering homeschooling for the rest of the school year. So many times children go to school and get exposed to different things and this Swine Fllu. is horrible. It has killed people years ago and it is doing it again.
I was wondering if anyone knew much about http://www.Guardian-Silver.com I know it does give us some hope of added protection for our children. I am sure if you have small children you would be reading and searching for answers and help. So far what I read at Guardian-Silver.com has given me the most comfort from this Swine Flu. I would like to know what others think about it.

Dr. Manny: I am just wondering if a person had a swine flu shot back in 1976. Would the body have any protection still or not.

H1N1 was the same strand of the 1918 Spanish Flu. Why is nobody mentioning that? Tamiflu is sold out in all the pharmacies around my home (Walgreens and CVS) and they’re saying they wont receive anymore shipments for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Now in everything I’m reading about a Pandemic it says that an average of 1-5% of the infected population will die. That means if 100 Million people are infected they expect 1-5 million people to die. The Director of the WHO holds a press conference at 11pm in Geneva Switzerland and states this is a threat to Humanity. In 1918 the flu came in waves. The 1st wave was in the Spring of 1918 and there were mild reports. It died down in the summer, but in the fall flu season (2nd wave) it swept the world and killed 100 million people. I fear there is fixing to be massive worldwide panic of an epic nature. There’s got to be more our public officials can say than wash our hands and cover our mouths when we cough. Should we pull our kids out of school? Bunker down? Avoid public places? Go buy supply’s as if a hurricane is “imminent”?

First of all, I would like to say enough of the racism against the hispanic (A.K.A mexican) people. With all do respect ,as a parent you would do whatever it took to help you child too. Also,if it weren’t for the (Mexican) people,America would not be what it is today. What percent of americans do you see doing the jobs the mexicans do? Hello there is your answer. If you are so worried about the produce, grow your own.The question I ask is could it be caught by a mosquito bite as well? The truth of the matter is that all you can do is your best to protect your family.No-one is to blame for this, everything happens for a reason.Just because it came from mexico does not mean they are nasty or anything.Truth of the matter is who are you to judge anybody? There is only one judge. Also, before you try to judge anyone look in the mirror to judge yourself, I am sure you will not find anything bad with you but leave it up to the next judge. All I will say is if you have faith and go by the rules, you should have nothing to worry about.Remember wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds at a time, cover your moth and nose to sneeze or cough, use anti-bacterial gel and wipes, mainly on desk, cafeteria tables, and door knobs, also last but not least lysol your phone too.germ-x is wonderful.Well with all said and done all you mexican haters have a great day!!!!Remember to you that are all about the mexican people and the border,Please do not use them to do any work for you..Do It Yourself..THANKS..2GUD4U

So, apparently we are on the brink of a pandemic! What exactly should we be doing in order to prepare for this? I’ve heard many people give advice but since it’s been so many years since something like this has occured I don’t believe anyone really knows what to do. I was told we should stock up on water and food due to the fact that virtually everything will be shut down. This is Bible prophecy being fulfilled right before our very eyes!

Comment by Lab Tech

It is the flu folks…take the precautions you would take during normal flu season and move on with your day. Flu is respiratory and you will not get it from eating pork. The media needs to stop blowing this out of proportion until there is a reason to make a big deal out of it. Inciting panic benefits no one.

Dr. Manny,
I caught eccoli last year this time, and since I have been taking probiotics, and fortunately I have not been sick at all this winter, I think the probiotics must work. Do you believe probiotics can help build up the immune system to ward off the flu?

Dr. Manny
My wife came home last night and told me that this virus looks more like the bird flu than swine flu. She works in a lab that test for dna mutations in diseases. This morning the US Farm Report stated that it was not the swine flu and was closer to the bird flu. Why are they calling it the swine flu. This is destroying the swine industry.

Comment by Captain Spaulding

This is getting ludicrous people! Do you all of you fraidy cats remember the last TEN years? We have gone through SARS, Bird Flu, and West Nile Virus. All of those were supposed to kill 99.99 percent of the world’s population and we would all be in shopping malls fighting off the diesased hordes like in Dawn of The Dead, remember? That is how all of this is always portrayed, and NONE of it ever happens. It didnt in those cases and it wont in this one. The constant fear that is perpetuated is worse than what ever the flu turns out to be….calm down, wash your hands, and eat some bacon.

FROM DR MERCOLA – MERCOLA.COM

American health officials declared a public health emergency as cases of swine flu were confirmed in the U.S. Health officials across the world fear this could be the leading edge of a global pandemic emerging from Mexico, where seven people are confirmed dead as a result of the new virus.

On Wednesday April 29th, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised its pandemic alert level to five on its six-level threat scale,1 which means they”ve determined that the virus is capable of human-to-human transmission. The initial outbreaks across North America reveal an infection already traveling at higher velocity than did the last official pandemic strain, the 1968 Hong Kong flu.

Phase 5 had never been declared since the warning system was introduced in 2005 in response to the avian influenza crisis. Phase 6 means a pandemic is under way. WHO now openly states it is not possible to contain the spread of this infection and recommends mitigation measures, not restricting travel or closing borders.

However, a pandemic does not necessarily mean what you think it does, it is NOT black-plague carts being hauled through the streets piled high with dead bodies. Nor does it mean flesh eating zombies wandering the streets feeding on the living. All a pandemic means is that a new infectious disease is spreading throughout the world.

Hello Dr Manny,
I have asked this question on the fox site several times now and still await an anwser please help me.
I live in Holmen WI across from a farm that will soon begin fertilizing with Swine Manure, is it possible for the Swine Flu to become airborne and spread this way? The smell last for days when they fertilize and believe me the smell is horrendous.

Thank you

Dear Doc,

I am wondering if H1N1 can be / or will be capable of being transmitted via mosquitoes. I live in Southeastern Massachusetts and we already have to worry about catching West Nile Virus in this manner. So…out of precaution, I wear a mask in public, wash my hands and every surface that I touch in public….only to be done in….while mowing the lawn?

Am I over-reacting?

Thanks

Our daughter, came down with the flu, about two weeks ago. She had the sore throat, fever between 99-101, terrible headache and ached all over her body. She was down for 5 days. We live in Naples, FL and she visited a local Wal-Mart, where the staff and customers are mostly Hispanic. She joked that they didn’t have wipes to clean her cart handle and that she would probably come dow with something. (She hates germs)In less than forty-eight hrs, she was in bed, and she is a healthey 23 yr old who had the flu shot. Can she get a blood test to see what strain of flu she had, or is it too late. Thank you.

Why is swine flu so much worse then the seasonal flu that goes around? My wife has an on going kidney condition that is monitored. Should be concerned about this?

Fear mongering! That is all this is. It’s a form of the flu, people! Use normal precautions and if you get sick see your doctor. Good grief! More people die of the “traditional” flu than this thing. I won’t live my life panicking about what “might” happen. I will take resonable precautions and enjoy every day I have.

Comment by OGolly

Please. 200 or so cases WORLDWIDE does NOT equal a “pandemic.” This whole thing is just over hyped hoopla. I suspect it is designed to scare us into submission for travel restrictions, etc. BTW, I am a retired Army Medical Service Corps officer, and I have a little training in this area.

Dr. Manny,

I can’t believe you don’t believe in wearing masks on an airplane as the same air is circulating throughout the flight. From now on, I will wear a mask until this crisis is over and it is a crisis when people die.

As you see, this is a comment in form of a question. Are there any special precautions for me as

my lungs have been so severely weakened by pneumonia that I have an IVIG every four

weeks ? I also have CLL and avoid crowds, even my grandchildren, if they have a cold, etc. In

light of these rather significant health problems I fortunately live a rather abundant life regulated

with a lot of medicine, including coumadin because of a heart valve replacement. The last thing I

need is swine flu. I opt on the side of caution when it comes to health issues.

Thank you for your time in response.

I am an American living in Leon, Mexico for the last five years. Today I talked to two different Mexican doctors regarding the treatment for swine flu here. They both stated that there is no antiviral medication available and that there is no laboratory testing of patients of patients reporting flu like symptoms. If there is so little regard for the protocols, how can we determine the true numbers involved in the outbreak, is it likely that the numbers are being under reported intentionally here.

Please explain why this flu is causing such hysteria in the media. From everything I have read it is no more deadly than the regular flu we see every season. I realize it is a combination of swine, bird and human DNA, but other than that what makes is so different? With all the hype you would think it was the Plague with a 90% mortality rate.

I am an American that lives and works in Monterrey Mexico, about 2 hours south of the Texas Border. I have seen many people around here with masks on, but they are still riding the bus, taking taxis, going into the stores like normal, etc.. I am very surprised that so many people are so worried about the flu. I do understand that this is a different strain than the “regular” flu, which has many of it’s own, but it hasn’t been shown or proven to be any more deadly or dangerous than what goes around every year normally. The mortality rate is actually the same or less, so what is making this flu so different? Just because it’s not the normal time of year? Or because it spreads just like the other flu’s? I don’t get the overall panic. I know the feds love panic, it makes a lot of money for many different industries, but really? Am I the only one not afraid to get the flu again? I get sick normally once a year, I don’t get any flu shot’s, I just stay home when I get it for a few days and it goes away. I’m not trying to be mean or rude or heartless, I guess I am just asking why this one is so different. I haven’t been able to get any straight answers from the so called “experts”. If there is a reason for worry, then let me know the real reason, I’m not a worrier or a germaphobe. I play in the mud, get dirty, and when I get a scratch or cut, I wipe it off and continue with what I was doing. Just asking, that’s all.

Comment by Jeff

The reason for the hype is the potential this virus has for high mortality rates. In 1918 the same strain killed an estimated 40 to 100 million people. Tresulthe virus is thought to create a cytokine storm that is basicly an autoimmune response that typically results in death from multiple organ failure. The people affected by this are the most healthy individual of the population. It was found during the spanish flue epidemic that people died within 24 hours of exposure. The Spanish flue started in a small population infecting 20% and had a high mortaility rate. Once it left that population and entered a larger population it was seen as relativley benign with no mortalities. After a while the the mortalities rate skyrocketed. The begining of the Swine flue seems to be mimicing the beginning of the spanish flue.

At this point there are no professional epidemiologists that believe this can be contained. The goal is to try to slow down the epidemic until a vaccine can be produced.

I cant understand the lack of hype in the media

As I read this site 80 peoples sick and 5 hospitalized…how do these numbers constitute a pandemic alert out of the millions of US citizens. Our 35,000 plus city had greater statistics of the flu this last season, quarentening(sp) several retirement and nursing facilities. What is the difference? Thank you L Smith..Indiana

Comment by Larry Watson

Dr Manny,

I read several years ago Central America had very few flu cases because the virus did not thrive in their warm climate. If this is the case, then many people living in this region have not been exposed to flu viruses. Would this be a reason for the hi mortality rate in that region?

I see people do some of the most germ spreading things all day long. They just don’t get it.

Comment by Don French

I think you got it wrong on the subject of why Mexico has a higher rate. We now know that the Mexican authorities have not tried to count mild cases, focusing instead on the severely ill and the dead. (Read it here: http://tinyurl.com/cd2vzr)

So the death rate is obviously much, much lower than they reported. In fact, the chances are very good that there have been around a hundred thousand cases in Mexico, but they were so mild (like the U.S. cases) that hardly anyone bothered to go to the doctor, so they weren’t counted. This explains several things at the same time. 1) Why would influenza, which is known to spread like wildfire in overcrowded urban third world cities only have 1500 cases after a month of circulating? There should be 100 times that many. (answer: there are!) 2) Why would is the death rate so high in Mexico compared to the U.S.? (answer: it isn’t!) 3) Why did so many Americans get infected by going to Mexico if there were only 1500 cases in the entire country? Some of them only passed through the airport. (answer: The virus was everywhere because there were at least 100,000 cases!)

So this simple explanation answers all the mysteries. They didn’t count the mild cases.

Is it possible that practising excellent preventive hygiene along with nutritional balance could obviate the necessity of getting flu shots? Also, is it possible that disease, especially cancer, excellerated more rapidly as a result of a society that has become increasingly “seedless” for convenience sake?

I am 56, haven’t had the flu since very early childhood, consume little or no cooked food, favoring nuts, seeded fruits (including eating seeds in moderation, such as grape, apple and apricot seed), grains and cheese instead of food cooked at home or outside of home– and I never ever get flu shots. I ride a bike every day to work, sail schooners with volunteer sailing programs, ride horses in Brooklyn, have worked at the same firm for 37 years and gave up jogging for indoor mini trampoline workouts. I see no reason to change my anti-flu shot mentality.

I had every symptom of the swine flu in late February of this year. I was very ill, but figured that it was “just” the flu. I hardly ever get sick, so feeling so sick in February has made me think that this was indeed the “swine flu” – now that I think of it.

Comment by Emily

Brenda Lee, I understand being concerned. I am a mother also. I do homeschool, but it is my experience that this doesn’t make my kids “sick proof”. Homeschooling is a big undertaking and done on the fly can cause undue stress to your family and stress is a factor in contracting any illness. Stay calm. As far as the sliver goes, I have used this on my children under the advice of a licensed Herbalist. Adults or children should only use this for 7-10 days, like an antibiotic, but BY NO MEANS IN PLACE OF ONE or during the course of one. It has been proven to have anti-viral capabilities, and can be used to avoid infections during times when you know they are circulating. If you choose to use this you can find it in liquid form at most health food stores. Try the Natural Path/Silver Wings brand. It has dosage for children or adults on the back. DO NOT USE PAST 10 DAYS. As far as how often you can do the 10 day course, I do not know. If you have flu like symptoms and a doctor does not feel the need to give you an anti-viral medication, but has confirmed you do not need anti-biotics for an infection, then I personally would use the silver. Above all if you have ANY flu like symptoms see a doctor before you do anything. Self diagnosis can cause way more problems than help. Proper hygiene and common sense are your first lines of defense. Trust them and then if the need arises, see a doctor and go from there.

The CDC says 36,000 people die of “common” flu each year. Less than 150 are or have been ill in the US from Swine Flu. Statistically, isn’t swine flu less deadly than common flu ? This seems to be another hyped panic like the previous swine flu “epidemic” when Ford was President

Comment by Mike Rossi

I was just curious if there are any DNA markers that indicate the H1N1 strain might have been engineered? “The Stand” scenario does come to mind, as was mentioned above, and though that scenario was (as portrayed in Stephen Kings novel) by accident, most in the “intelligence community” expect some form of attack on American soil in the near future. Not panicked, just curious about details that may not have come to the surface yet.

Questions:

1) What is the false positive rate for the assay used to assess swine flu? How many tests have been done?

2) Why has no one spoken of the real problem which is the risk of genetic resortment of the virus?

3) Surely someone at CDC knows the virility of the virus from infectivity rate and assay positivity. What is it and how does it compare with the existing strains.

Dr. Manny,

Why does the CDC stay so far behind in updating its website? We have had a confirmed case (patient is critical) in our hospital since Sunday, April 26th. (LaGrange, GA) I do know the confirmation came at least a couple of days ago, if not longer. Their website still does not show any cases in Georgia. In this case, they really should be more informative. It makes me think that there could be so much we have not been informed of yet….concerning.

I take 2 immunosuppressants & want information – just to be careful.

my two sons and I traveled to Lake Tahoe, CA on the weekend of April24 thru the 26th and stayed at the Embassy Suites. My youngest en route home became very nauseous (no he does not get car sick ) and had a headache and complained of body aches. When we got home it was apparent he had a flu ie: fever 102, chills, sore throat , coughing, just plain miserably.
I took him to our Dr and he was given a generic form of antibiotics and told to stay in bed the rest of the school week. My son was only tested for strep throat which was negative.
I believe a lot of these flu’s are the H1N1 and the doctors were not notified in time so they were not testing. My son seems to be doing fine. However, was the antibiotic enough or did he recover on his own immunities, can he be reinfected, what if the doctor did not tell him to stay home, I am sure there are others out there who went to school, work, traveled etc.
Indecently, Lake Tahoe, is a resort area serviced by a tremendous amount of Latin, migrate workers.

I am amazed at the world wide hype the news stations (including FOX) has given the Swine Flu and the worldwide spread of the infection. When our US Govenment seems to be ringing alarms on one hand and have total dis interest on the other. My daughter and 4 girlriends have just returned from Cancun Mexico on Saturday May 2nd. She said that the resorts are not saying a word, it’s business as usual ( or was) Many of the resorts are now closed because word is now spreading that mexico is NOT the place to vacation.
When my daughter was at the airport she was asked to fill out a single page survey of her health, was asked if they could take her temperature and then allowed to leave Mexico. She arrived at Chicago O’Hara airport went through customs with out a single look. The customs guy didn’t look up, didn’t care, was totallay dis-interested . She then boarded a flight to Boston with the same results. No US Government intervention at all. There seems to be a hugh void between what is being reported and reality. Does anyone wonder why the flu is spreading? I am not at all surprised. This is one example of where the government should be stepping up to the plate and didn’t even show up for the game…

Let’s say a person had a case of this particular strain of the swine flu but never was officially tested. Would there be something in their system, that lab testing at a later date could show that the person definitely had that particular strain of the swine flu earlier? I am not sure of the medical terms here but hopefully you are understanding my question.
I am wondering this because my family was in southern CA around the first of April, came home, and we each got every sick with all the symptoms of the swine flu. The doctor said to just stay home and rest. At that time the media frenzy had not yet begun. We did eventually end up in the doctor office because the respitory symptoms required medication but we were never tested. Now we learn that our symptoms match the swine flu symptoms.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 36,000 Americans die yearly from the regular ol’ flu. Per their website, there has been one confirmed death from the Swine flu as of 11am yesterday… why exactly again has the Swine Flu been so hyped up? If I recall, that death was a baby. While that makes it an especially sad death, babies bodies are way more susceptible to disease and because their immune systems aren’t built up (especially with parents that keep them away from anything and everything) they have a much higher mortality rate. Get a friggin grip America!

Comment by Christine Plante

Why the dramatic change from closing schools for a single case of swine flu to leaving them open? I am aware that people will develop some immunity when the same virus returns in the cold weather later this year if they get it now, but does this actually mean that there will not be enough vaccine developed for 300 million Americans? I have a weakened immune system and I am so displeased if it turns out that I’m not even warned that a child in school (where my child attends) has this H1N1 virus. Does it mean that testing is too expensive?

Q from G. Savage
A:…Even though I’m not a big advocate of wearing masks, I do feel that you should wear one. But remember: Not all facial masks are created equal, so get one that has been proven to protect against viruses. There are many supply stores that carry this specific mask for viruses.
What specifications should one look for on the masks you mentioned?
I would appreciate your comments on this email,
This message is from Dr. Vinay Goyal a renowned doctor who
visited last week to lecture on the topic H1N1 (SWINE FLU),
its origin and precautions.

He is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist)
having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked
in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital ,
Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading
our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at
Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel it makes a lot of
sense and important for all of you guys to know

The Message………..

Thanks to media hype about H1N1, several people who trust me
have either approached or called me to advice. The hype in
media about the utility of face masks and N95 respirators as
a tool for g eneral protection against H1N1 can’t be deplored
enough. Yesterday, a friend who listened wanted me to write
down briefly what I advised so that he could tell others in
similar words. Hence this short email to friends whom I have
advised recently (and others whom I haven’t yet). Please
realize that this is not an official advice, especially the
one about face masks or N95.

Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates
of 0.3µ, while the s ize of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence,
dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting
against rain with an
umbrella made20of mosquito net.

Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further
proliferation till the virus limits itself in about 1-2
weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A
viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and
proliferates (only) there. The only portals of entry are the
nostrils and mouth/ throat. In a global epidemic of this
nature, it’s almost impossible not coming into contact with
H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not
so much of a problem as prol iferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of
H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferatio n,
aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary
infections, some very simple steps ? not fully highlighted
in most official communications – can be practiced (instead
of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official
communications).

2. “Hands-off-the-face” approach. Resist all temptations to
touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine
if you don’t trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial
infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and
show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents
proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the
same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an
infected one. Don’t underestimate this simple, inexpensive
and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once
every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good
at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean
nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and
swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt
water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in
Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to
supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also
has Zinc to boost absorption.

6.* Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. *Drinking warm
liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse
direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the
throat into the stomach where they cannot survive,
proliferate or do any harm.

All these are simple ways to prevent, within means of most
households, and certainly much less painful than to wait in
long queues outside public hospitals.

All this hype really needs to stop. The swine flu is less severe than the regular flu. You people are acting like a bunch of nut cases. I rarely wash my hands, eat food that is very outdated, and I haven’t been sick in 5 years. Probably because I keep my immune system working hard. All this over medication and use of antibacterials is just making the situation worse. You people need to take a chill pill and relax, you’ll live.

I recently ran across a alarming link while reading the news online. I have no clue if this is accurate or a conspiracy ploy. But I would sure like someone to look into this and tell me what you think. It is regarding the swine flue and it being man made by the world bankers,WHO,NATO and the Iluminati and many others. Please watch and tell me what you think.

Hello, i am very concerned about my future health and i have read in articles that the new H1N1 shot contains mercury. Can this lead to Guillain-Barre Syndrome? i have been informed this attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.

Thank you – I hope to hear from you

Just google this web site to see the true horror of forced vaccination programmes. Now we know what the one world order is really about.

I was wondering how long the H1N1 virus can live when it is airborn?
