Finding Motivation for Sex

One of the best ways to have more sex is to actually have sex. This is because sex boosts testosterone in the body, which revs up our sex drive. People have lots of excuses, many which are quite valid, for not having sex, among them: Childrearing obligations, stress, time, fatigue, etc … But at the end of the day, these excuses get abused.

People need to make lovemaking as much of a priority as anything else in their lives. They also have to be mindful of not taking their lover for granted. We need to continually woo and entice our lovers, especially in keeping things hot, desirable, and fueled. Passion can be maintained throughout a romance, no matter how little time you have. But people need to understand that this takes work.

Pilots Lost in Cyberspace

ablow052710The two pilots who overshot Minneapolis by 150 miles, remaining out of communication with air traffic controllers for over an hour, have blamed their silent detour on being distracted by their laptops. Captain Timothy Cheney and First Officer Richard Cole have denied falling asleep, instead explaining that they were reviewing their schedules on their computers.

Whether or not Cheney and Cole were sleepy, this “lost in cyberspace” story is a wake-up call for all of us. The amazing undertow of new technology is indeed powerful enough not only to distract many of us, but to pull us completely off-course in our lives.

The same moving cursor, clicking keys and bright light emanating from Cheney and Cole’s laptops can be hypnotic to millions of Americans, who are disoriented by the lure of their computers and the false comfort of navigation systems. How many traffic accidents on roads, after all, are being caused by people texting while following the voice prompts and LED arrows of their navigation systems.

Not only are we at risk to forget where we are going on the road or in the sky, but we can lose sight of who we are, what our real goals are and what our real emotions are. As Marshall McLuhan said, “The medium is the message.” The technologies we are deploying in a wholesale way across the nation and across the globe will have dramatic psychological effects we can’t predict.

We’re already seeing people who I believe are more violent online than they would be if they weren’t “projecting” themselves into cyberspace. Cyberbullies gang up mercilessly on school kids they haven’t even met. Young women on YouTube broadcast themselves beating other young women.

I have evaluated more than one client in my own practice who was charged with possession of child pornography who I doubt would ever have accessed inappropriate images were he not removed from his sense of self and his core identity by the infinitely depersonalizing distance of a computer keyboard and computer screen. Think about it: If two highly trained pilots can veer 150 miles off course because their laptops suck them into a black hole of inattentiveness, isn’t it possible that computers can lure otherwise good and decent people to very indecent acts?

I believe they can.

I have also counseled couples in which either the wife or the husband engaged in racy, inappropriate behavior online (including e-mails) that I doubt would have ever occurred without the seductive draw of being relatively anonymous, nearly disembodied and technologically “over-powered” by the use of computers and the Internet.

When we consider that much of the world’s military planning and actual weaponry involves the use of depersonalizing technology and computer simulations, we should begin to wonder whether unthinkable acts could be possible (especially by rogue regimes) as people drift off course in more than one way.

The Healing Cat’s Claw

Targeted by pharmaceutical companies for over a century as a land of exploration for source materials of new drugs, the Amazon rainforest is also a treasure trove of botanicals for the herbal supplement industry. Among the many Amazon botanicals which have come to light in recent years, Una de Gato (Uncariatomentosa ), which means “cat’s claw” in Spanish, is one of the most promising of all. A woody vine, the plant earns its name cat’s claw due to a preponderance of sharp, claw-like thorns. Dispersed throughout Central and South America, Una de Gato has been used for centuries by numerous native tribes.

 

 

catsclawUna de Gato is described by Dr. James Duke in his Amazonian Ethnobotanical Dictionary as a plant used widely in Peru for anti-inflammatory, contraceptive and cytostatic (retards tumor cells) purposes. In popular literature, Una de gato is additionally touted as an immune stimulant, and a large number of studies do in fact show that Una de Gato offers significant anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing benefits, and that constituents in the vine may help to inhibit tumor cell formation.

Una de Gatohas been known for a long time due to the explorations of Voctorian era explorers. But the plant gained the attention of the European scientific community in the early 1970’s when Austrian Klaus Keplinger heard of a remarkable cancer cure attributed to the use of the plant. Keplinger spent time in the Peruvian Chanchamayo region of the Amazon, and familiarized himself enough with the plant that he became one of the most important scientific authors on its uses. Since that time, researchers have plumbed Una de Gato’s chemical secrets, in search of what might account for its purported healing benefits. Analysis shows that Una de Gato contains at least five alkaloids, and two other important groups of compounds, quinovic acid glycosides and triterpenoidsaponins. In addition, the plant contains antioxidant polyphenols.
catsclaw2Studies conducted in vitro with Una de Gato show that constituents in the plant possess anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, antiviral and immune-stimulating properties. The alkaloids in Una de Gato demonstrate immune-enhancing activity by producing an increase in phagocytosis, a process by which potentially harmful materials are “eaten” by protective cells.  In studies of quinovic acid glycosides in the plant, researchers observed significant anti-inflammatory activity. Additionally, these same compounds were shown to inhibit several types of common viruses. In studying triterpenoidsaponins, scientists observed that these chemical agents inhibited the growth of some tumor cells.

Good science provides assurance of herbal efficacy to today’s modern, medically-oriented market. Well-conducted scientific studies appear to validate several of the traditional uses of Una de Gato. The plant appears to be safe and non-toxic, and is useful in cases of inflammation, compromised immunity, and viral infection. It is a significant aid to relief in cases of both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. With further research, the plant may eventually play a broader role in a complementary approach to the prevention and treatment of certain types of cancer. Tribal people in the Amazon would no doubt be amused by scientific inquiries into Una de Gato. After all, they’ve known for centuries that the woody vine with the sharp, claw-like thorns is a healer.

Looking for Una de Gato products – I have become acquainted with various Una de Gato products, and recommend two if you are going to use this medicinal plant. One is Saventaro, a product made in Austria from Una de Gato harvested in Peru. Saventaro is an encapsulated product, available in natural food stores.  Raintree Nutrition, on the other hand, offers a fluid extract of Una de Gato, also from the Amazon rainforest. This fast-acting fluid has a woody taste and is available from Rain-tree.com.

Pick of the week:  I have previously written about ginger, and this widely used plant will crop up repeatedly, due to its broad uses. In any case, not everybody is willing to shred or grate their own ginger. With that in mind, a company called Ginger People makes a Minced Ginger in a jar. You just scoop a spoon full of this finely ground fresh ginger into whatever you’re cooking, and you can easily and quickly derive the benefits of ginger.The zippy taste, combined with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, make this herb a healthy powerhouse. I’d still recommend grating your own, but convenience is king these days, and this minced ginger product delivers that. Surgical Options for Breast Cancer Patients

The most common surgery for breast cancer these days is a lumpectomy, which is considered breast-conserving therapy. If patients choose to undergo this surgery, it has to be combined with radiation therapy, which can be administered in the form of external radiation, where the whole breast is radiated, or partial breast radiation called brachytherapy.

Another option for surgically treating breast cancer is by mastectomy. Mastectomies remove all the breast tissue, but nowadays, most women are candidates for immediate breast reconstruction done during the same operation.

When reconstruction is used, women can have either a skin-sparing, areola-sparing, or nipple-sparing mastectomy. This is where the skin and/or the areola and nipple are preserved, which improves the cosmetic outcome dramatically. The type of breast cancer that a woman has will determine which of these procedures is appropriate.

Reconstruction can be performed by using implants or tissue transplanted from other areas of the body. Most commonly, abdominal fat is used, which results in a tummy tuck.

Some patients may need to have chemotherapy prior to surgery. Although this is not proven to improve the survival outcomes, it increases the surgical options and may potentially decrease the risk of local recurrence in the breast.

There are so many more options for women these days for surgically treating breast cancer, and they should be discussed with a breast surgeon.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

111_cerbasi_blogTeachers, like most people, have a reputation in your community. This teacher is “the nice one” and that teacher is “the structured one.” Depending on your child’s personality, talents and challenges, you decide that your child absolutely must have “this teacher” in order to be successful.  When your child gets assigned to “that teacher’s” class, you fret and worry about how he or she will ever survive the year. Parent-teacher conferences role around at the end of October, and you are now sitting face to face with the person who will lead your child on this leg of her educational marathon. 

The most important thing to remember when going into your child’s conference is to suspend your preconceived notions and go to the meeting with an open mind. You may see a different side to the teacher or find that he or she is not  “the mean one” after all.  Listen to what she has to say and be receptive to her educational opinion on your child’s class work.

In addition to coming into the meeting with an open mind, here are some other tips for having a productive parent teacher conference this fall.

Prepare questions
Come prepared with specific questions. Make a list and leave space to take notes on the teacher’s response.  Keep in mind that most conferences have a time limit- typically about ten minutes- so narrow down your list to the most important three or four questions. It is better to spend time discussing three or four questions in depth than to rush through ten questions.

Stay on topic
The upcoming 3rd grade holiday party may pop into your head while speaking with the teacher but this is not the time to talk about it. Make a column on your notes for “Questions for Tomorrow.” Write a note or an email to the teacher with that list of questions the next day. Start the email thanking her for the conference and let her know you didn’t want to waste valuable conference time on “housekeeping” issues.

Only talk about your child
Now is not the time to clear the air about playground quarrels or disagreements between the class mothers. It is simply inappropriate to discuss your child’s classmates with the teacher.  The teacher does not want to referee or be involved in any way with these types of discussions. Putting her in that position will leave her feeling uncomfortable and the more you bash others when speaking with the teacher, the less she will want to communicate with you.

Ask for homework
Ask the teacher for one or two things that you can spend time working on at home.  Every student has a skill or an area that could use some extra reinforcement.  Teaches know that you don’t have a degree in education so be comfortable asking for specific ways you can support your child at home. Ask for strategies or techniques to use and follow up in a few weeks to let her know how it’s going.

Save your marital problems for a counselor
Do not let your personal relationship issues rear their ugly head during the conference.  It is not uncommon for spouses to disagree on parenting techniques, but now is not the time to discuss your differences. Be careful not to let “I agree with you but he doesn’t think so” slip out either. You must maintain your composure during conferences, even if you and your spouse are in the midst of an argument. Many teachers have been put in the middle of disagreements between spouses and it makes for an awkward situation. Remember, this is your child’s teacher and she has no place mediating for you and your spouse.

Parents are usually eager to have the teacher’s attention during conferences and teachers look forward to the opportunity to keep parents informed about their child’s progress. If you feel your conversation needs to go beyond the brief conference, ask the teacher for a follow up meeting or phone conference later in the week.

Remember to keep an open mind when meeting your child’s teacher. Some of the most amazing educators feel a lot of pressure during conferences and therefore have trouble sharing their knowledge and insight with parents in this format. Do not interrupt the teacher or finish her thoughts. Let her get her point across and then respond.

Always thank the teacher for her time and her work, even if you disagree with her opinions or techniques. “Thank you for your time” shows that you respect her position and are willing to have a positive relationship that will ultimately benefit your child.

The Skinny on Halloween Candy

tanya_zuckerbrot2Q: Every year I over buy Halloween candy and then scarf down the leftovers. Any advice on best and worst candies to buy?

A: We all remember the house that used to give out raisins and pencils during Halloween. To avoid being given a nasty look by children while still staying fit during the Halloween season here are some tips for the best and worst candies to choose from:

1. Chocolate—Luckily, some of the most decadent chocolates now come in miniature sizes and just a few bites can curb your cravings.  2 Tootsie Rolls are only 50 calories and 1 g fat while 2 Hershey Kisses also have 50 calories and 2.5 g fat. Avoid chocolate bars with milk chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, or caramel such as Snickers or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Instead, opt for chocolate such as York Peppermint Patties, dark chocolate covered Raisinets or Junior Mints. Not only will the serving sizes be larger but they will also be lower in calories and fat and to top it off the dark chocolate will give you an extra antioxidant boost!

2. Fruity Candy—Candies like candy corn and Skittles® are your best options because they are lower in calories and fat than chocolate. If you are someone who likes quantity, for 100 calories and 2 g fat, you can have 5 Starburst chews OR for 100 calories and 0 g fat, you can have 20 pieces of candy corn. You save 2 g fat by eating the candy corn and you get to eat 4 times the amount! Even though these candies are low in fat, they are still sweet and satisfying!

3.  Suckers– The best bet of all though and one that will actually last the longest is the Tootsie Pop. Unlike candies that you eat in seconds, lollipops have only 60 cal and 0 g fat and you can suck on them for hours and enjoy the sweet flavor all day long. 

Once the holiday is over though your best bet is to be generous with your candy and share it with your coworkers or just pass it along. Keeping it at home will just temp you even more and although it may seem wasteful to throw it out, it isn’t going to do you any good eating it either.  Another suggestion is to only buy the candy that you do not like. This way you won’t have any desire to eat it.

Tracking H1N1 Vaccine Side Effects

dr_manny_blog2There has been a lot of push back when it comes to the H1N1 flu vaccine. Of course, as with any medication, there could be side effects because not all immune systems are created equal.

But what people have to remember is their reasons for not supporting the vaccine – mainly because of the fear that it was rushed and long-term side effects are not yet known – are some of the same reasons preliminary reports of possible side effects could also be coincidental. For example, if someone has a heart attack after receiving their H1N1 flu shot, are they going to assume it’s directly related to the vaccine or attribute it to unhealthy lifestyle decisions?

The Associated Press recently published an article on this topic that looked at how the government will be intensely tracking the side effects of this vaccine and separating legitimate medical concerns from inevitable coincidences.

This is a proactive plan. The government is going to be putting information together for the public in an effort to stop the spread of false rumors and try to put the public at ease.

One major focus will be miscarriage since they are encouraging pregnant women to get the vaccine and miscarriages are quite common anyway.

Like the seasonal influenza vaccine, medical professionals expect the side effects associated with the H1N1 flu vaccine should be minimal. The most common side effect with all flu vaccines is soreness at the injection site, and sometimes people feel achy.

Many Americans are concerned about the safety and efficacy of the newly developed H1N1 flu shot because of a similar vaccine that was linked to a swine flu-like outbreak at Fort Dix in 1976.

Guillain-Barre occurs naturally following upper respiratory illnesses, digestive illnesses and on rare occasions – is associated with drugs and vaccines. However, the frequency is still 1-2 per 100,000 people.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on this, and if anything is reported, I’ll be the first one to let you know.

Herbal Germ Fighters

Most of the time our bodies do an excellent job of fending off these microbes. This self-defense is due to the immune system, which notices any pathogen (disease-causing agent), and attacks it with immune foot soldiers including macrophages, lymphocytes and phagocytes. But sometimes our bodies can’t fight off disease-causing agents without help.

This is when certain herbs can come in handy.

 

 

Working Two Ways

Mixed spicesHerbs can help to fight germs in two ways. On the one hand, herbs can bolster the immune system so that our bodies can respond more powerfully to germs when they attempt an invasion. On the other hand, some herbs can even kill germs outright. Let’s examine a few common germ-fighters in the herbal world.

Ginger

This common root contains two classes of compounds known as gingerols and shaogals.  These are powerful antioxidants, so they help to prevent premature destruction of cells, a very handy function indeed. But these same agents also increase the proliferation of immune cells, thus providing more ammunition for the body to ward off disease. Ginger also contains a group of compounds called sesquiterpenes, which kills rhinoviruses, the agents that cause colds. So when you have a cold, several bracing cups of fresh ginger root tea can help you to reduce the severity and duration of that unwanted event. Ginger tea also relieves a sore throat, providing immediate relief.

Green Tea

Many people know green tea simply as a pleasant, low-caffeine beverage. But green tea’s antioxidant compounds, called the polyphenolcatechins, also boost overall immune function.

One of the functions of these compounds is to inhibit tumor growth. Studies of human populations show decreased incidence of some types of cancer among green tea drinkers, and animal studies show specific immune activity against various types of tumor cells. This is not to say that green tea is a cancer cure. But drinking green tea daily can reduce your risk of cancer overall, by enhancing immune function. This same immune-enhancement helps to protect you from various pathogens in the air and in water and food.

Elderberry

More spicesIn some small studies, elderberry has demonstrated anti-flu activity. This is due to a group of antioxidant flavonoids in elderberry thatbind to the influenza virus and prevent infection. Some researchers question the real efficacy of elderberry as a flu-fighter, but it does demonstrate some value. A recent study of elderberry extract and the (new scary) H1N1 virus showed that the antioxidant compounds in the berries inhibit the proliferation of that virus. While further work must be done on this, the study suggests that at least, elderberry may help to reduce the activity of this flu.

 

Garlic

Sometimes called the stinking rose, garlic has long occupied a special place in natural healing. This fragrant and pungent member of the allium family enhances overall cardiovascular health, fights various types of cancer cells well, and is a potent immune booster. But garlic goes beyond this, actually killing many of the types of bacteria that cause food poisoning. Heavy use of garlic is prevalent in places and cultures where food preparation hygiene may be poor, and where refrigeration is not always available. Adding fresh-pressed garlic into food, or cooking with garlic, may prevent sickness due to bacterial contamination. And if you have a cold, press a clove of garlic into a cup of hot water, add the juice of a lemon, mix in a teaspoon of honey, and drink it down. This shot to the immune system will help you to get rid of the cold faster.

Hot Peppers

Not everybody likes hot peppers, also known as chile peppers. But for chile lovers, these peppers not only pack a hot wallop, they provide immune support as well. You can use hot peppers fresh and raw, cooked, or as hot sauces. Like garlic, hot peppers enhance immune function, thereby making your body more resistant to disease. They do so thanks to the presence of capsaicin (think really hot), the oil that gives peppers their heat. This is also the same oil used in topical capsaicin arthritis creams. Like garlic, hot peppers also kill bacteria outright. In West Africa, people commonly make a paste consisting of finely ground hot peppers, ground coarse salt, and minced onions, which have a similar effect as garlic.  This paste is eaten in small amounts alongside food that might contain bacteria.

Herbal Pick of The Week

I derive absolutely no income or favors from the makers of Tabasco sauce, but I will say that this common and well-loved hot sauce is a regular part of my personal health regimen. Made only with tabasco variety hot peppers, this sauce shows up almost everywhere in the world. Not only does Tabasco contribute zip to foods, but it’s a great natural medicine to carry when you travel. You can definitely find hotter and more exotic sauces, but in my book Tabasco reigns supreme.

Hippocrates famously stated  “Let food be thy medicine.” In the herbs above, we have common foods that also play valuable germ-fighting roles in nature’s medicine chest.

Balloon Boy

ablow05279If it turns out that Richard and Mayumi Heene did plan the hoax that transfixed our nation, then they are the most dramatic examples yet of our celebrity, media-obsessed culture turning people into narcissistic monsters and children into props in their made-for-TV lives.
 
The Heenes, who are storm chasers, veterans of “Wife Swap” and producers of their own YouTube video series, knew what kind of drama would glue Americans to their TV sets.  This one had so many critical elements: A little boy in danger of losing his life, a chase scene involving a shiny balloon, the specter of helicopters and jets in the sky and ”panic-stricken” parents.   If only the Heenes had also been scantily clad, they might have actually gotten a contract for a new reality series signed before their plan deflated like . . . well . . . a balloon full of hot air.
 
But to Richard and Mayumi Heene, you see, reality doesn’t matter.  Real emotions don’t matter.  The well-being of their children doesn’t matter.  Danger doesn’t matter.  Only fame matters.   It is their drug. They crave the anesthetizing atmosphere of public recognition and the money that often follows.  They want to slip the confines of their real lives and float away from their inner feelings of being small and anonymous and powerless.  In this way they are no different than that old variety of addicts who left their kids to fend for themselves while looking to score crack cocaine or heroin.  They are no different, even, from heroin addicts who “sell” their own children.
 
Think about the “adventures” on which they had already brought their children.  They had peddled them to a network, exposed them to a surrogate parent and TV cameras in their own home—twice.  They had encouraged them to post videos of themselves online, for anyone who might like to watch (including would-be perpetrators of violence against children).  They had reportedly kept them in street clothes when putting them to bed, then awakened them in the middle of the night to go running after hurricanes and tornadoes.  That’s about as much fun for kids as trolling dark, drug-infested streets for dealers. And it amounts to the same thing: Two parents braving danger and putting their kids in harm’s way in order to get wired.
 
The Heenes are, as I have said, no better than heroin addicts who would trade their kids for their drugs.  But they are no worse. I have treated addicts of every kind, some of them seemingly beyond redemption, and again and again I have found frightened, traumatized human beings inside.  These human beings were hell-bent on running away from painful events in their lives, and, with help, some of them were able to stop running, turn around, face their demons and defeat them.  There is always that possibility for healing, and it is always worth the effort to make that healing happen.  
 
Safety and reality have to come first, however.  To that end, if it is proven that the Heenes perpetrated a stunt that required their children to lie on national television and participate in a crime that used the nation’s precious resources and the efforts of real heroes on a scam, then they should surrender custody of their children.  That would be a terribly painful event for their sons, each of whom has, no doubt, forged very powerful bonds with these very pained parents.  But I wonder if it would matter one bit to Richard and Mayumi Heene, as long as the tearful goodbyes were carried live on all the networks.

Healthy Breakfast Frittata

INGREDIENTS:
Nonstick vegetable-oil cooking spray
2 4 ounce cartons frozen egg substitute, defrosted
½ cup reduced-fat milk
½ cup Fiber-sure fiber supplement
½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 ounces thinly sliced ham, chopped (can substitute Canadian bacon or sliced turkey)
1 cup frozen spinach, defrosted and squeezed dry (can substitute broccoli)
1/3 cup Parmesan or mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
2. Spray a 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick spray. Whisk together the egg substitute, milk, pepper, and salt in a large bowl until thoroughly blended. Stir in the ham, spinach, cheese, and basil.
3. Fill prepared muffin cups almost to the top with the egg mixture and bake until they puff up and just begin to set in the center, about 8 to 10 minutes.
4. Using a rubber spatula, loosen the frittatas from the muffin cups and slide them onto a platter.

Wrap individually and keep in fridge. Microwave for one minute in the morning.
