H1N1 Swine Flu Update

siegel1Here is the latest about the novel A(H1N1) swine flu pandemic virus, and what we are doing about it. Also check out my new Ebook: “Swine Flu; the New Pandemic.”

The best way to decrease the amount of circulating AH1N1 flu virus is to vaccinate as many people as possible. This is known as herd immunity.

The current H1N1 though mild, has infected millions and hospitalized more than 10,000 here in the U.S., killing close to 1000, so mass vaccination is warranted.

Unfortunately, once the vaccination program starts, it will be TOO easy to blame ANY deaths on the vaccine. This happened in Great Britain with the HPV Vaccine, where Cervarix is expected to cut deaths from cervical cancer by 650 and 1.4 million women have already been vaccinated, the vast majority with no problems. Yet a single death which was later found to be unrelated to the vaccine caused hysteria.

Though the 1976 swine flu vaccine was linked to several hundred cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome (paralysis) for a pandemic that never happened, this time there is a real pandemic, and the vaccine has been well studied in clinical trials and found to be very safe and has not been linked to GBS.

This vaccine is made the same as the yearly flu vaccine, with hen eggs, and will be just as safe, with the major complication in the vast majority of cases being local irritation around the injection site.

In discussions with senior officials at the CDC I have determined that it is acceptable to give both the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 swine flu shot at the same time.

The CDC also recommends H1N1 vaccines even for those who believe they have had the disease. Serological tests to confirm immunity are considered unreliable and are not readily available.

The flu mist inhaled vaccine is being released this week. Since it is using an attenuated (weakened) live virus, it should not be given to pregnant women, those with chronic conditions, or those who are immunocompromised. It has also not been tested in the elderly.

The injectable inactived H1N1swine flu vaccine will start becoming available in two to three weeks. It uses an inactivated (dead) virus, and can NOT give you the flu. It is safe in all except for those with severe egg allergies. It should be given first to health care workers, pregnant women, children, and those with chronic conditions. 250 million doses should be available by sometime in November, and I will be recommending it for all.

Swine flu parties are a bad idea. They are an example of deliberate infection to provoke immunization. Since flu is so easily transmissable, it can easily get beyond the party and spread to someone who is more likely to have a severe outcome, such as a pregnant woman, a young child, or someone with a chronic condition.

The risk of the flu is far greater at this point than the risk of the vaccine. It is still a very mild virus, but must be taken seriously, as flu is tricky, and can kill. Coming out of the southern hemisphere, whose winter just ended, the prevailing strain of H1N1 swine flu is a good match for the vaccine.

“…the vaccine has been well studied in clinical trials and found to be very safe…” Can you please direct me to the source of that information? I am serious; not trying to be sarcastic at all. The clinical trials on children 10 years old and younger only began about three weeks ago, and there hasn’t even been time to obtain results, but that doesn’t stop the media from touting it as “safe” for all.

Actually, it was expected a better article, written by a doctor. If you had doubts about the vaccine (H1N1), my doubts were much higher. In fact the article makes the “advertising”, but he did not explain the essential, in addition to blatantly lie, the various vaccines “really” not tested “properly”.

The article in fact is so bad, that could be considered a good help for the detractors of the vaccine, after reading the article I was much more doubt. Besides that did not explain the fact that the public interest, such as use of adjuvant, live virus or asleep, because the vaccine spray is dangerous, thimerosal with about 50% mercury vaccine, etc., etc..

Nor did it explain why thousands of doctors and nurses all over hand, according to recent surveys, one in two French doctors refused to be vaccinated in Hong Kong and Portugal there is the same situation. Did the doctors not want to vaccinate all be alarmist?
Thanks

Hi. I am almost 27 weeks pregnant and have 2 children, 3 and 1 year. I am concerned because there has been such conflicting views on whether or not to get this vaccine. I did get the regular flu vaccine last week. I have never had a flu vaccine at all. I seem to have done fine with that vaccine. Nothing to report as of yet…it was last Tuesday. I just wish that doctors could agree that getting this vaccine is the best option. Will there be a mercury free form for pregnant woman? Thanks

Dr. Marc Siegel is an analyzer of TV shows? His spin seems to indicate that he not only is paid by FOX but by CDC and pharmaceutical industries as well. The buisiness proposition is more than $3 Billion after all.

“This vaccine is made the same as the yearly flu vaccine, with hen eggs, and will be just as safe” which means just as unsafe.

Why then did governments provide pharmaceutical companies blanket immunity from lawsuits arriving out of the vaccine causing deaths and injuries? This should be a red flag to everyone.

Dr. Siegel attempts to misinform and hide the dangers, otherwise he would have posted the WRNING included with the different vaccines. He doesn’t even mention which manufacturer he is talking about.

The Pharmaceutical companies (-Focetria- from Novartis, -Pandemrix- from Glaxo-Smith-Kline) provide a list of the side effects such as:

• Temporary inflammation of the brain and nerves causing pain, weakness and paralysis that may spread across the body.
• Narrowing or blockage of blood vessels with kidney problems
• Allergic reactions leading to a dangerous decrease of blood pressure, which, if untreated, may lead to collapse, coma and death.

Assuming a 50% rate of coverage of the US population this translates into 180,000 dead (if not admitted to IC) and 18,000 people with strokes and hart failures.

The cure is deadlier than the disease!
The H1N1 is significantly less deadly than the seasonal flue and there is no justification for mass immunization.

I think that you are a mean, arrogant man that after many requests to stop calling it the “swine” flu, you actually title a book after it. Pretty callous. You act like you care about people, being a doctor, yet you are affecting people every time you say “swine” flu. I don’t suppose you have a pill to help the thousands of farmers losing money because of ignoramouses like you that won’t stop using a dumb name?

I live in Jax.Florida and have numerous underlying medical conditions. I want to get the vaccine (as suggested by every MD that I have) but can’t find it available anywhere. Any suggestions?

I read in the WSJ on lune this am that Canada is giving no regular flu shots as studies have shown it makes getting swine flu more easily. It is difficult to believe. My husband and I have already taken the regular flu shot.

I asked my pediatrician about vacinating my 4 yr old and my 11 yrs old. He does not recommend it. After talking with friends/family none of their drs are either. Yet the news is telling everyone one to get it?? I have asthma and so does my husband. Our allergist is uncertain also?? I am planning on getting it and seeing how I do but what about our kids? How can the CDC say one thing but dr are saying they don’t know what side effects and are not planning to get it. I have heard that since the drs are not collecting money for the shots ( the govern is paying for it) could it be a matter of the drs not “wanting” to participate because they are not getting money. I mean would you want your waiting rooms filled with people to get the h1n1 shot and not get a dollar for it? It makes me wonder – What is a parent to do? Vaccinate and take your chances and go against your dr or do nothing and hope your kid isn’t the one who winds up in the hospital or even dead. Come on CDC work with the dr’s and give them some info and drs wake up and speak with your patients and become informed.

I agree with Mrs. Steele above. Where is the data from the clinical trials that will prove this vaccine is safe? I’m a pharmacist, and my children aren’t getting this vaccine. There has been so much hype about the swine flu that I think the FDA was going to approve this vaccine no matter what the results of the clinical trials show.

Don’t forget the 1976 swine flu vaccine that actually killed some people and injured others permanently. And it turned out that there wasn’t even a flu pandemic. The government just said there was. Why should I believe the government this time when they were so wrong last time?

As a consumer of both sides of the flu/H1N1 vaccination controversy, it amuses me that the pro vaccination side is so adamant in light of genuine concerns by large numbers of reputable and respected experts. The party line is so oft repeated, like drug company talking points, that it seems that there is no controversy at all. However, the evidence to the contrary is so significant that it seems there would be someone out there who would systematically and objectively evaluate the diametrically opposed perspectives both of which indeed have merit. It erodes the confidence of open-minded and intelligent Americans when our official and professional individuals and organizations keep declaring that we just need to trust them and don’t listen to those other people. It has been proven again and again that those “officials” have made big and costly mistakes in the past yet they don’t learn to consider, with a little humility, that they may be making another big one, instead of just “quacking” the opposition. I agree that some of the anti-vaccination rhetoric may be a little shrill and unfounded. But the arrogance of a system that can’t learn from their significant failures in the past, is distasteful to a growing number of people who exercise a little common sense, do some research and remember examples of gross error. E.g trans fats being declared “heart healthy” by the American Heart Association in the 60s. Respectfully

What about Dr.s/Clinics that refuse to see you or issue a prescription for Tamaflu? We are told to stay away, call ahead first, with our symptoms (so as to not infect the whole waiting room) and then are refused meds? Who are they to judge and play God by not letting us have the medication? They decide?

This issue is less about usefulness (or lack thereof) of a vaccine than it is about the usefulness of a bureaucratic organization. The Center for Disease Control (DC) is now the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. As the CDC, its mission was reactive in nature, a responder to real threats. As a “preventer” its role must be proactive. This new role requires bureaucrats to determine what might happen, in other words, guess what the next threat might be. They were seriously wrong about the threat of “Bird Flu” several years back. So, waving their collective arms about H1N1 has some significant fall-out. If they are wrong again they have a serious credibility problem. After all, who needs an agency that can’t figure out what is actually threatening us? (though we seem to have a number of these today). So… what to do? Wave your arms wildly about the falling flu sky and encourage everyone to get vaccinated. If you don’t go along with vaccination and nothing happens, the CDCP again looks like a ship of fools… again. Go along with vaccination and nothing happens, they get to take credit for saving you from a great pandemic. Oh yeah… and if you don’t get vaccinated and we all get H1N1 they get to say “I told you so”. This is two winners out of three possibilities for the CDCP.

Dear Mrs. Steele, et al.,

We also should be informed of the tests conducted on elderly residents of Maryland too, while we’re ‘Cherry Picking’ for specific test groups.

Fortunately the H1N1 virus itself HAS been extensively tested on children. So we at least know (more-or-less…for the moment) how ’safe’ it is!

Reductio ad absurdum insistence on exhaustive redundant testing has a price, you know. But it’s a price that can’t satisfactorily be measured in dollars, but only in tears. Just like the irrational anti-vaccination rhetoric of some celebrities, such insistence will certainly cause the avoidable deaths of some number of children. Do us all a favor, O.K.? Please explain to their grieving parents why they made the right decision not having them vaccinated, even if it did result in their dying of the flu. Now THAT would be an enlightening conversation to overhear!

I understand totally the concerns of an epidemic. BUT, My understanding is that our health care workers in all of New York State have been notified that the H1N1 FlU shot is Mandatory, Or They Will Be Fired. And, No one is liable if some one screws up. THAT SCARES THE HECK OUT OF ME. WHAT is Happening To Our Rights to make our own choices in life? This sounds to me Like, ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.

I am with Mrs. Steele! I have been looking for the results of those H1N1 vaccination studies that have been done and I have been unsuccessful at it! If the vaccine was so very safe for us to take wouldn’t you think that those web sites would be easily found…..especially since there ARE so many people with concerns about the vaccine! I know that you are supposed to take a man for his or her word but if I am expected to take a H1N1 vaccination being a health care worker I would LOVE to see the results of those studies not just hear about them! I have heard many physicians state that they do not feel comfortable vaccinating themselves or their families related to the speed this vaccination was brought about….I mean we are talking ONLY months! I am with the vast majority of Americans here! My family and I will NOT be injected with this vaccine not only because of the unknow long term effects but also the hidden results of the current studies! Somethings just are not adding up here! I am going to chose right now to put my FAITH in God not the Government!!!!

OK, here I go again. Doc on the frontline reporting. Can’t get the seasonal vaccine (again). Serious shortage of the trivalent Flu vaccine, which covers a H1N1, H2 and B type and makes a lot more sense to take, the 30,000 deaths a year notwithstanding. The skinny on the novel H1N1 “swine”…way expensive costing us taxpayers on average a $1000 per shot and largely overblown in its effect. Good news is this vaccine will be plentiful (if not wasted) and most likely safe as it is basically the same vaccine as the seasonal H1N1 and made by the same Euro pharma connection. The announcement by our president to procure urgent vaccinations and anti-virals (worthless Tamiflu) was made April 2009, so the vaccine out by October, 6 months later is the usual and fortunately not fast tracked as I feared it would be. Keep in mind the novel H1N1 has probably been around close to 10 years and “discovered” by a new toy RT-PCR authorized fall 2008. This $400 test started to find this new flu March 2009. However, what is not been made very public is that viral confirmation studies were pretty musch split equally by “swine”, seasonal H1N1 and a H2 types all along. Many flus are year round..but we Docs can’t buy the regular flu vaccine (unless at inflated prices) because these companies have quit making them in favor of newbie H1N1, the newest of our fascination with hype and celebrity status. So this is the evidence based/cost savings medicine we are tuning up for? Good gracious

10,000/307,648,589 = 3.3 x 10 ^-5 OR 0.00033 OR 0.033%, which is statistically insignificant

Yes, it is highly contagious, and yes, you could die from complications of flu. But honestly, you can have that with ANY virus. And I, for one, am not going to pay any dollars for the seasonal flu vaccination because it has a one year lifetime, and also, the influenza virus is the most diverse that I’ve been told of (48 combinations?).

Good luck to you all. I recommend keeping up with great hygiene and vitamins.

It is very interesting to note how We can claim without any real evidence that the vaccine is ” safe” .
Also how anyone can say that mercury of any amount, a known neurotoxin is ” safe ” It is a blatant falsehood. Studies in 2003 show dna damage from Mercury. There are videos where you can see the neurons disconnect and whither when exposed to mercury. Then what about Squalene ? the adjuvant . Supossedly aluminum is the only approved adjuvant in US. Squalene was implicated in vaccines that may have caused the gulf war syndrome . Squalene is given to lab animals when you want them to get autoimmune diseases so you can do research on what helps autoimmune disease. Check out info from Dr. Russel Blaylock. I’m not taking the shot or my kids . And we are taking vitamin D3 and selenium, Check out Dr. Joseph Mercola, and Mike Adams the Health Ranger for more info. Everybody stop drinking soda depressing your immune system, get plenty of good sleep. When your immune system is working properly and you don’t have emotional trauma that you are not dealing with …you just don’t get sick. This is let’s scare people into paying billions for a shot that will only mess with their neurology in unpleasant ways. And make huge profits for those sweet companies. Maybe they are the good guys….but maybe not so good. Go on the internet, get the facts on both sides and make up your own mind.

It appears that the H1N1 flu is not as bad as the government is claiming. They said that the Bird Flu was going to kill 1,000’s and SARS was going to run wild in the world. Now its Swine Flu, I don’t trust the US Government to run GM, Health Care, and the Banks. This appears to be a smoke screen to allow this irresponsible Congress and Obama Administration to hide their collective failures for another year or two. Lets give the responsible individuals a collective boot in the next election. Ask yourselves to remember these imbeciles are the same people who have tripled the National debt. Elected officials should all be term limited and should not be given any retirement monies for public service. They should understand that we appreciate their public service and despise greed and corruption in office. I’m just a OEFOM who is mad as hell and I’m determined to do something about it.

I thought the exchange between Dr. Steigal and the othe doctor on Beck’s show, was strange in that Stiegal seemed more interested in economics than our safety and the other doctor made more sense. At one point Dr. Stiegal admitted that it would be better for these vaccines to be made in the USA rather than China, which sort of implied that the Chinese product would be less quality than ours. I am wondering also why we would trust our national health care to a country destined to want to destroy us? I have always enjoyed watching Dr. Steigal on FOX, but came away yesterday that he was putting more of “spin”, on this issue than a true concern for safety.

Articles are published daily on the concerns over swine flu and ways to protect ourselves and our children. Pediatricians, the Centers For Disease Control (CDC), and other experts have established guidelines for washing your hands. There is even a National Clean Hands Week, September 20-26, 2009 that has been established by the Clean Hand Coalition with the U.S. Soap & Detergent Association. While Hand washing is a simple precaution we can all take – the question for parents is “Are your kids washing their hands the right way?” Now parents can answer “yes” making it fun and easy to get their kids to wash their hands healthier – with the Disney Musical Hand Wash Timers from Healthy Hands!

The Musical Hand Wash Timers fit on any liquid soap pump dispenser and feature kids’ favorite characters and music along with flashing lights to encourage kids wash their hands for 20-25 seconds (the recommended wash time to eliminate germs to a level that will lead to better hygiene). Best of all, parents won’t have to change the brands of soap they know and trust because the patented design fits on all standard soap brands – including wide and thin nozzle brands.

With the Musical Hand Wash Timer, the natural action of pushing down on the pump to dispense soap triggers the music to play. Each unit will get more than 1,000 uses – which is a lot of hand washing!

“I’ve worked for years to spread the principles of healthy hand hygiene” said Dr. William Sawyer, founding member of the Clean Hands Coalition and creator of the Henry The Hand foundation. “I’m a major supporter of new and innovative ways for parents to get their kids washing their hands longer, and the Healthy Hands Musical Hand Wash Timers are a great approach.”

For years, parents have tried to find “tricks” to get their kids to wash longer – sing “Happy Birthday” or say your A-B-C’s twice, there’s no need for that anymore.

Healthy Hands Musical Hand Wash Timers are available for sale at http://www.GetHealthyHands.com and select retailers. More versions with all new characters and music will be released in the months to come.

People nationwide are becoming angry and frustrated that they cannot get the H1N1 vaccine. People are dying at an alarming rate….This vaccine should have been released by October 1, 2009, as we were promised. This will be Obama’s Katrina. Schools in my area are not informing parents when children in schools have contacted H1N1. It’s almost as if everyone is trying to keep it quiet. A 14-year-old student recently passed away….a needless death. Reason….no vaccine available to prevent contact and spread. The CDC and state health departments are encouraging everyone to get their H1N1 vaccine. Where is it? Have the President and Congress been vaccinated? Have their family members been vaccinated? What will it take to get this vaccination program operating? I do not want to see anyone die because our government is hesitating to send out this vaccine. I do not want to see any die because of the neglect of government to see that everyone has the vaccine available to them. We have known about the dangers of this virus for months and have been preparing for months. Where is the vaccine? I was told by a physicians office that they could not get the vaccine and that the government was controlling who would and who would not get the vaccine delivered. President Obama, please, please do something. Do something to help the people.
