How Old Is Your Food?

tanya_zuckerbrot2Sometimes we don’t realize that whether or not we purchase certain foods we eat should depend on their age. The age of the foods you eat could have an effect on how well it keeps you healthy and how many nutrients it contains.  The following article will tell you the ideal “age” for some of the foods you eat.

Chicken: Although capons are mostly white meat, they are high in fat. Poussin/spring chicken, the smaller one of the group has very little fat. A poussin is a very young chicken, and it has a very delicate flavor and little fat at 4-6 weeks old (5 grams). A capon is 8 months old and contains 17 grams of fat.

Coffee Beans: Dark roast means that the coffee bean has been roasted to a higher temperature and typically for a longer period of time. This causes all of the flavor molecules stored within the coffee beans to be burnt away. By roasting so dark, you can’t tell whether it’s a good bean or a bad bean because all the natural flavors have been turned to charcoal.

Onions:  Cornell University scientists tested 10 different onion varieties for phenolic and flavonoid content. Shallots, known as the baby of onions, ranked highest in antioxidant levels. Shallots had the greatest effect against liver cancer cell growth. They have the most phenols, six times the amount found in Vidalia onion.

Carrots: Baby carrots are not young carrots, but rather small pieces of carrots that are chopped and whittled down to look like small carrots. They are peeled, and washed, and insanely convenient. Unfortunately, baby carrots are often made by manufacturers who chemically remove the skin, which leaves them with 30 percent less beta carotene then a regular full grown carrot. Their normal lofty level of beta carotene heals sun-damaged skin and is great for encouraging a lovely complexion, since it promotes circulation and hydration. The root vegetable works as an antiseptic, useful in treating breakouts.

Bananas: Green bananas have more starch which is broken down to sugar during ripening. Therefore waiting until bananas turn yellow, you will not only reap the most health benefits, but enjoy the rich sweet taste as well. Bananas are loaded with potassium and vitamin B6 acts as a natural diuretic which helps to prevent bloating.

Smoking and Weight Gain

tanya_zuckerbrot2For someone who is trying to stop smoking, a cigarette is the first thing you will think about when you’re bored and a popular reason to begin to smoke again. In the past, smoking cigarettes kept your hands and mouth very busy a lot of the time.  Therefore the outcomes of quitting smoking, often causes one to gain weight.

Your taste buds begin to improve which leads you to constantly need something in your mouth. Smoking also increases your metabolism, so when you stop smoking, your metabolic rate begins to fall and your weight increases because your body now burns fewer calories. Plus, the absence of nicotine causes your insulin level to rise, leaving you hungry.

Instead of grabbing for a bag of chips or a snickers bar, it may be helpful to keep your hands and mouth busy by turning to healthier options which will not only allow you to feel better, but look better as well. Below is a list of foods that are sure to keep you busy without sabotaging your diet:

High-fiber cereals: As you’re well aware, cereals contain a satisfying crunch factor for your teeth and mouth.

Carrots and celery: This will keep you healthy while giving you a satisfying crunch throughout the day — and you can eat tons of without worrying as much about calories.

Sugar-free gum: A calorie-free way to get through the day.  Chomping away on sugar-free gum allows one to go through the motions of eating without actually eating.

Sugar-free mints: Similar to chewing gum, these breath-fresheners give the mouth an activity without calories.

Pistachio Nuts: Opening up each shell will keep you busy and satisfied when craving a smoke

Apples: They’re filling, and they boost the body’s energy level significantly. Apples are a sweet, large and crunchy route to satisfaction.

String cheese: You pull on it in tiny pieces and it comes off like string. It can easily take up 20-25 minutes of your crave time if you want it to.

Low-fat popcorn: Popcorn is a healthy snack that contains a lot in a bag on few calories. Microwave a bag to keep your hands and mouth busy. 

Popsicles: Do to the fact that they are so cold, it will take you a long time to lick and get to the bottom.

Latex Allergy 101

Dr. BassettEver since the early ‘70s, we have been on the universal precautions bandwagon. 

First, we introduced latex gloves in the healthcare setting in doctors’ offices and in hospitals.

Next, individuals who prepare and serve food in restaurants, cafeterias, etc. also started using latex rubber gloves.  So what are the chances you can develop an allergic reaction to latex rubber?

The majority of those affected develop only localized symptoms such as skin irritation and burning, itchiness, redness and/or swelling of the hands or those areas exposed to the latex.  Next, are those unlucky allergic people who may have reactions that are more serious and progressive.  Higher-risk areas include the dentist’s office, operating room or emergency department and gynecologists’ offices ― just to name a few.  So get a medical identification card and/or bracelet to inform of your latex allergy! 

So where else do we see allergic reactions to latex rubber?

What am I seeing in my office?  Just the other day, a restaurant owner who supervises food preparation (personally) was exposed to foods and products served by staff who wear latex rubber gloves. When tested, we learned she had become allergic to latex rubber and had two potentially life-threatening reactions as a result of exposure in her own restaurant. 

If you are allergic to latex, be aware you may also react to the following foods: Bananas, avocados, chestnuts, apples, carrots, celery, papayas, kiwi, melons, potatoes and tomatoes.

Foods for a Better Sex Life

tanya_zuckerbrot2There are some great foods that you can incorporate into your diet that are heart-healthy and will do wonders for your sex life! Cooking together with a romantic partner encourages intimacy and connection — so prepare meals together.

Stay away from foods that contain excess amounts of caffeine — they reduce libido.  And stay away from foods that may make you feel bloated and gassy (cabbage, broccoli, onions). Selenium, manganese and of course, zinc, are also vital in regulating hormones and revving up sex drive and are found in various fruits and vegetables, so include a salad with meals if you want some action later. This is very exciting news, so start preparing.

Foods for a better sex life:

Bananas, carrots, asparagus. 
Bananas, carrots and asparagus are all erotic stimulants because of their phallic resemblance.  Asparagus contain folate, which boosts histamine production necessary for the ability to reach orgasm in both sexes.  Plus, watching you eat asparagus, a phallic food, is sure to get him in the mood.

Red wine.
Red wine is healthy for your heart and your romantic moods!  It may help prevent blood clots and reduce the blood vessel damage caused by fat deposits. It is also a particularly rich source of antioxidants which raise HDL (good) cholesterol.  It lowers inhibitions and stimulates appetite so add a glass of wine to a romantic dinner!

Oysters.
Oysters have long been considered the food of love, and legend has it that Casanova ate dozens of oysters a day — once even seducing a vestal virgin by sliding an oyster from his lips.  Oysters carry a hefty dose of zinc. Zinc has been linked to male fertility, potency, sex drive, and is essential for sperm production. The daily requirement for zinc can be gained by eating just one oyster, so imagine what serving your boyfriend/husband an appetizer of a few oysters can do …  schwing!  If oysters aren’t his thing, turkey, lean beef, and beans are other good sources of zinc.

Champagne.
 So you’ve already heard the buzz that a daily glass of wine raises good cholesterol and helps prevent arteries from clogging. But alcohol, especially champagne, can also improve your health and your sex life. Like many mind-altering substances, a glass or two of champagne will lower inhibitions and help ease any couple into an amorous mood. 
 
Pistachios.
Besides providing protein to help increase stamina, pistachios are heavy in healthful mono-saturated fats, zinc and other nutrients that are linked with increased sexual desire. Pistachios also have a greater portion size than any other nut, so you can eat 49 kernels (1 serving) and still feel thin and sexy.
 
Artichokes.
This nutrient-dense, peculiar plant was once considered such a powerful aphrodisiac that women were banned from eating it. According to Martha Hopkins, co-author of “Inter-Courses: An Aphrodisiac Cookbook,” part of the appeal of the artichoke may be that you have to work hard to “get past the spiked leaves to get to the velvety-smooth heart.” 
 
Spices.
The right spices not only heat things up on the tongue, but also in the bedroom.  Capsaicin, the substance that gives kick to peppers, stimulates nerve endings to release chemicals, raising the heart rate and possibly triggering the release of endorphins, giving you the pleasurable feeling of a natural high.  “Chili pepper and ginger help improve circulation,” says Dix. “And hot spices like cayenne, curry and cumin help warm the body.”  The intoxicating aromas of exotic spices help infuse romance into the atmosphere.
 
Avocado.
According to the Doctrine of Signatures, food aids the part of the body it resembles. In fact, the Aztecs valued the avocado as an aphrodisiac and named it “ahuacale” or testicle because they grow in pairs. Though science can neither confirm nor deny that this fruit will get your fire going, it will give you fuel in the form of healthy fats, protein and potassium.
 
Chocolate.
Don’t skip dessert!  Eating chocolate causes the release of mood-boosting, stress-reducing serotonin. The sweet stuff also causes a release of phenylethylamine, which causes changes in blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, leading to feelings of excitement conducive to lovemaking. Just make sure to choose antioxidant-rich dark chocolate.

Even smells of certain foods have been found to be sexually arousing, according to studies at the Smell and Taste Foundation in Chicago, notably:

For men: Pumpkin pie and buttered popcorn
For women: Licorice candy

Tanya’s Tasty Tips: Easy Cholesterol-Lowering Tips

tanya_zuckerbrot3Nearly 50 million Americans have high cholesterol. There are two kinds of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein). HDL is often called the “good” kind of cholesterol because it helps remove unwanted cholesterol from the body. LDL is the “bad” cholesterol made up primarily of fat, and is a particular risk factor for heart disease. So when setting out to lower your cholesterol, you need to know your HDL number, your LDL number, and your total cholesterol number.

This  chart will provide you with some helpful information:

     Total Cholesterol

HDL

LDL

       Best: Below 200

Men: 40-50

Best: Below 130

     Borderline: 200-239

Women: 40-60

Borderline: 130-159

        High risk: 240

High risk: Below 40

High: 160 or above

High levels of cholesterol in the blood increase your chances of developing heart disease. In an effort to lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk, you must increase your fiber intake. Clinical studies show that a heart-healthy diet that is low-fat and includes lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grain products that contain fiber can lower blood cholesterol. Fiber, among its other benefits, seems to bind up cholesterol allowing it to be eliminated from your body. If enough is removed it can lower cholesterol by 10-15 percent.

Many studies have shown that fiber can slow the liver’s manufacture of cholesterol, as well as modify LDL particles to make them larger and less dense. Researchers believe that small, dense LDL particles pose a bigger health threat.

The American Dietetic Association recommends that Americans eat 20-35 grams of fiber per day. Here are some fiber-filled foods to help lower cholesterol:

•   Oat/oat bran/whole-wheat products
•   Dried beans and peas
•   Nuts
•   Barley
•   Flax seed
•   Fruits such as apples and pears
•   Vegetables such as carrots and broccoli
The key to improve overall health is not only dieting, but making physical activity a part of your daily routine. Regular physical activity is key to keeping your cholesterol low. Aerobic exercise may improve insulin sensitivity, HDL, and triglyceride levels, and may reduce your heart risk. People who exercise and control their diet appear to be more successful in long-term lifestyle modifications that improve their heart risk profile.
